If this is the sound with which the artist thinks it will represent his song best, then why should he refrain from using over-dubs while it will only make it sound better? I've seen recordings of him live (not yet had the privilege of seeing him live i person) and this man can sing. But in music it's not all about being able to sing, it's being able to write and compose music that touches and affects people. This man can do that.
