this is good advice for the flippers out there (me) ...I like to think I'm rolling dice with my left hand to get the proper release of the club face post impact. Thx.
There are many golf methods and many ways of explaining how golf swings work.
This will help clear the confusion for you.
1. There is a ball flight
2. There is an impact
3. There is a golf swing that influences the first two
Whatever approach you decide on the important thing is to achieve a sound and consistent impact. Find the approach that does this for you regardless of who's teaching it.
Good luck with your journey and thanks for your comments.
I'm a beginner and now I'm confused. I've been watching too many Moe Norman videos where he says he keeps his club face square for a long time through impact.
Thank you, yes this video is targeted to amateur golfers who tend to hit the golf ball to the right. The reason for this is that the majority of golfers who have attended my golf schools over the last 18 years tend to hit their shots to the right. So this video focuses on clubface-left wrist/forearm control. I cover golf shaft lean in other videos I've produced. Thanks for taking the time to write a comment. I always appreciate feedback.
Nice video, but this seems to be targeting people who keeps pushing the ball. Reckon it is important to point out that to release with the rotation of the golf club face, the left arm has to supinate, keep the left hand in front of the ball and to avoid left wrist break.
you said to let the LEFT wrist and forearm "roll". would you serve a tennis ball with your left hand? the RIGHT hand is the key to the clubhead releasing, the left hand is just along for the ride, or is really just a brace.
You're right, the bent right arm and bent right wrist as they straighten either consciously or unconsciously help to release the clubhead and golf shaft inline with the left forearm which I cover in other videos I have produced. In this video I was concentrating on clubface control not clubhead control. In simple terms the straightening right arm controls the clubface and the turning/rolling/rotating left wrist and forearm control the clubface. Thanks for your comments I appreciate them.
Yes, there's no doubt about it, there are more theories on how to swing a golf club than grains of sand on the beach.
I'm pleased that you gained some clarity and found your authentic game. I hope that you continue to enjoy your newly found confidence and that your scores continue to improve.
Good luck and thanks so much for taking the time to write a comment.
Former golf professional here...carried a +2 for 3 yrs. got away from game for several yrs...everything went awry.....worried about so many things..took a lesson or 2...made it worse...teacher said everything was great...needed to work on this that and the other...tried to put me into stack and tilt. I was very frustrated...one watch of this video, and the other one about stop over the top....fixed...well better i should say....instead of 85-87 now right back down to 75....thanks so much
It sounds like your right arm is straightening out before the golf club strikes the ball which can create pull shots. It's extremely common and can be frustrating. Assuming that this is the case Pete, work on leading your downswing by pulling the handle into the ball with as much right elbow bend as possible. The more elbow angle in the right arm-the more the path will stay on its correct plane leading to a stronger and straighter flight. Let me know how you go and thanks for your comments.
i have tried this but found that with my driver i tended to hit pull shots - i think my right wrist is breaking down with the momentum and flipping but its killing my scorecard -any suggestions or a follow up with use of the hands/wrists in the release-pete
Another great video and one that I can definitely use. I like the way you said "let the left wrist rotate" not "make the left wrist rotate". Many of my flaws are the result of too much tension and not letting body parts move in a more relaxed way. This video will help that. Thanks!
Kinda/sorta off topic in a way but since you mention the grip, how "strong" should you set your grip? Generally I set my grip to a point where the "V" created by my thumb and index finger of my left hand points directly at my right shoulder and then the right hand I try to place comfortably onto the club with an overlapping grip. I know some instruction books and such say to go with a stronger grip to counteract a slice but obviously too much will prevent a proper releae, correct? Thanks!!!
I'm really pleased that you enjoyed this video and that it provided you with the information you need to improve your game. Good luck with it and thanks for taking the time to comment.
this is the only video on you tube which describes the release in such detail - i have just learned the 50 yard pitch watching phil micklesons you tube video and he does this exact action and am going to practice with all clubs from now on -great tip thanks
It sounds like your release motion in not compatible with your backswing angle. It is far easier to develop the correct release motion compatible with your current backswing than to change the shape of your backswing and develop a new release sequence.
Check out the latest video I produced on developing lag and work on releasing the club the way I describe.
You will be surprised how much better you will hit it with this method.
Thanks for the swift reply, great videos! I suffer from trying to hold on to the release combined with a flat backswing, typical shots are pull hooks and push slices.
A golfer who 'flips' the club is generally over-accelerating the golf club so that the club-head releases in-line with the left forearm well before impact forcing the left wrist into a bent condition (described as flipping).
In my lesson I described the release of the shaft both in terms of radial acceleration (outward) and also rotational acceleration and through the impact zone the rate of rotation of the golf shaft and left forearm are perfectly in sync.
Thanks for your kind comments and I wish you the best of luck with the lesson and hope that with some additional practice it helps you to play a lot better.
excellent advice,,did not work for me ( it's okay I'm laughing about it ) but it will work for me.
I took this to the practice range yesterday ( I'm an eight handicap player ) I wanted to combine this lesson you posted along with the alignment lesson.
I had the worst case of the S----S ( hosel rocket shots ) I've ever had in my golfing life.
This lesson on release is well put together and explained,,,,I need to spend more time working on it.
Thanks again for your comments Mr Doobie. My motivation is simply to share information and explain it so that it removes some of the mystery from what is essentially just a backswing and forward swing motion.
i HAVE JUST WATCHED YOUR ENTIRE SET OF VIDEO ON YOUTUBE. i HAVE TO SAY THAT IT IS WONDERFUL AND I WILL RECOMMEND THESE TO EVERYONE I KNOW...SIMPLE EXPLANATION OF EACH MISUNDERSTOOD ASPECT OF THE FULL SWING BROKEN DOWN..BRAVO AND THANKS SO VERY MUCH
Thanks for commenting and the best of luck with your golf. I'm glad you liked the lesson.

Sure, I went to a local factory that fabricates using different types of plastics and got them made to use in my videos.

Would you mind telling me where you got those arrows that you are using?

I think that it's important to produce a swinging action where for the most part you just hang on and let the golf club perform.
This is easier to do when you understand how the golf club needs to behave (based on its design) before you execute your shots.
I wish you the best of luck developing this release pattern.

This is a great video.
It not only tells you what you should be doing but it also tells you what you have been doing and why it is wrong.
The release is a very strange concept for some golfers. I should know :).
gmonkey808 4 months ago
That's a great question. Your rotate your left hand on the handle just enough to produce the desired spin on your golf ball.
You're right the books say 'stronger' but every golfer is different so you need to adjust to your ball flight preference.
Thanks for taking the time to share your comments.
