How is this going smoother than the snes version!? THQ you have earned my respect back, just stop with the licensed games, and bring us destroy all humans!
@y2k4ever1 The SNES version was just a complete disaster. I don't know how they managed to make it so bad !! This is a remarkable version really, considering the limitations of the Game Boy.
That looks bloody good on the gameboy, very surprising, I have started buy in the odd game for my old original Gameboy, this is going on the list now..
@rob1969in Aaaah so it was you was it !! Hahaha I was bidding on it as a spare copy !! Glad it's gone to a good home though matey and I'm sure you'll enjoy it :-)
@mathowlett Ha ha sorry mate, I was a bit sneaky and bid in the last minute, I wouldn't have done if I'd known it was you! I hate it when people pip me at the last few seconds , but I guess that's ebay for ya!
Good old Argonaut working their magic on ancient hardware. It was this game that got them noticed by Nintendo and invited to design the Super FX chip and Starwing.
@LarryBundyJr It's the dithered filled polygons that makes it look similar - in reality the 3d engine here has little in common with Incentive's of course. But I am impressed by this now, never seen it before - it certainly looks better and moves faster (smoother frame rate) than the speccy version for example!
@nukinetix Indirectly maybe it was in a way. Jez San created Star Glider for the Speccy, which used a Z80 chip, just like the Gameboy. So perhaps the work (maybe even actual code) on Star Glider helped with Race Drivin', which indeed was the game that impressed Nintendo so much.
@mathowlett That's interesting, I didn't know that. I always thought it was Starglider that impressed Nintendo, especially since Starwing was basically a simple evolution of Starglider (and very similar to it in many ways)
@mathowlett Hmm .. from wikipedia (for what it's worth): The game company Argonaut worked closely with Nintendo during the early years of the NES and SNES. They developed a prototype on the NES, initially codenamed "NesGlider", which was inspired by their earlier 8-bit game Starglider, and then ported this prototype to the SNES. Programmer Jez San told Nintendo that this was as good as it could get unless they were allowed to design custom hardware to make the SNES better at 3D.
@mathowlett Yes it is very interesting! Starglider, especially Starglider 2 (which was released almost half a decade before Starwing!) was actually a FAR better game - better graphics, smooth frame rate, no add-ons required (for amiga and atari st), vast universe, multiple planetary systems that you could travel between seamlessly, and a completely sandbox setting where you could go and do whatever you liked! Nintendo apparently dumbed down Starfox deliberately into a linear experience! Typical!
@SteveBenway Yeah, it's really quite incredible what they did with this considering the limitations. It's very playable and looks great on the first generation Gameboy especially. The very slight LCD blur helps smooth the visuals slightly. I'll stick a vid up of it running on the hardware when I get chance.

The opening tune to the game sounds like the build up to the theme in Chuck Rock!

@LarryBundyJr It does !! Cheers Larry, I'll have that sodding Chuck Rock tune rattling round my head all day now... ;-)

@SteveBenway IT kinda reminds me of Driller on the ZX Spectrum.

@nukinetix Yeah, it's a cracking version. The tracks are bit cut down, but it plays brilliantly. Nice and smooth too for the most part !

@SteveBenway It was? Wasn't it Star Glider ?

@mathowlett I'm pretty confident it was indeed Starglider that got Nintendo interested, not Race Drivin'

@nukinetix Yeah, looks like you're spot on :-) Thanks for the info. It is indeed interesting stuff !!
