sammy white crooner want to be? frank helped bring him in rat pack he wasnt a wanna be dude... he did what he had to do at the time and that was pop music then fused with jazz ..like ella and nat ..ignorant comment dude.... sam was great...
For all those who say that Sammy Davis' or Sinatra's version is better: besides the fact that it's absurd to compare artists or tastes, and in this case it's really apples and oranges, for the sake of the argument, think about this: James Brown CAN sing That's Life and make it his own, but I doubt that Sinatra or Davis could have ever pulled off Sex Machine or Mother Popcorn...try to imagine it.
@dixxjamm - You are correct. James Brown had the uncanny ability to take anyone's signature songs (Love Me Tender, Something, Your Cheating Heart, etc) and change them up and adapt them to his own style. This is my favorite James Brown 'That's Life' version. Some others live in the same period are slower and more melodious, but I love the screaming and pace of this version!
@dixxjamm I'm sure without hearing this, a lot of people would [wrongly] say they doubt James Brown could pull off "That's Life". Sammy did I good cover of "Hi Heel Sneakers" (In fact he mentions James Brown in the version I've heard) but as you say, which style you prefer is a personal thing. I listen to them all depending on mood, it's all good. I'd like to hear him do Sex Machine actually, can't imagine what it'd be like.
I think I saw this on a show called "The Night James Brown Saved Boston" on VH1 Rock Docs. Apparently this took performance took place the night of or after MLK Jr was shot and the JB concert in Boston calmed a lot of the rioting going on there.
this may be Sinatra's tune but James rocks it!!! So much better than the original (sorry, for those Sinatra fans.. though you have to admit this gets you moving!!!).
There was a comparison between Sinatra and JB by another guy. I think you can't compare these two. Sammy was Sinatra's pal and nearer JB's style in music. It was just a thought..
@SinatraSpirit - Sammy Davis was NOT nearer James Brown's style of music! Sammy sang mostly the same songs Sinatra sang! Sammy was a white crooner wanna be who was extremely talented but never broke out of the 'white style' mold.
@SinatraSpirit - That's your opinion, and you may like Sinatra's style and Davis' style better, but imo no one is better than James Brown, living or dead! He could do it all, sing, dance, arrange, produce, play, perform, direct. He is the TRUE king!

Even james jams frank. But no. No one can do frank like frank, it was the mood back then. That was respect James was doing.

it's a pretty cool cover. I don't think it gets to the heart of the matter as much as Frank's version does but, as they say, That's Life.

That's life (that's life)
that's what all the people say
Ridin' high in April, shot down in May
But I gotta change that tune now...

it's different.. what gets you moving is not necessarily good. Frank is still the King. Sammy Davis was much better than James B.

What's with this comparison?
