Conception is obviously the beginning of a possible human life but up to a certain point in its development it is a parasite. A fetus lives off the host until viable. That host should have the right to consent to hosting or not and that is not for the government to say. Many years ago the life was not given credence until the quickening. Still carrying and birthing a baby is a private matter and making abortion illegal will only make it available to those that can afford to go elsewhere.

A human body isn't public property, otherwise you could legally force a person to be a prostitute and give you sexual service if you wanted. There are all sorts of perverse and totalitarian outcomes that would occur if you give the government or the public rights over an individual's body.

If someone leaves their dog in your house it may not be your property but you don't have to keep it in your house and the owner of the dog can't force you to give the dog shelter. Same with a baby. Are you referring to the baby? If so you're correct but the baby is IN her body. You can't force someone to keep something in their body if they don't want to. If you give the government that right they also have the right to put whatever else they want in you, like control chips. They also have the right to prevent you from having tumors or damaged organs removed.

It has to do with what definition of "life" you are referencing. The question is when an embryo becomes a person. The thing is no one can agree on an objective classification for this. Therefore, the issue is currently being judged on the basis of belief systems, and this is the root of conflict.

Maybe I'm missing something, but from what I know about biology, the statement that a fertilized egg is the beginning of human life seems fairly indisputable. It meets all the requirements of living organism, and its certainly a member of the human species. However this has little bearing on whether a single cell, bundle of cells or even a baby-shaped embryo incapable of thought or survival outside the womb should be considered a person or granted its own rights.

Conception is obviously the beginning of a possible human life but up to a certain point in its development it is a parasite. A fetus lives off the host until viable. That host should have the right to consent to hosting or not and that is not for the government to say. Many years ago the life was not given credence until the quickening. Still carrying and birthing a baby is a private matter and making abortion illegal will only make it available to those that can afford to go elsewhere.

@Vitaluv I don't think it's murder. It's population control, arguably of the least desirable kind. Just a quick look at human history and it's clear we have always had abortion in one form of another and it's been vital throughout history. Abortion is no more murder than my gluttony is murder causing people in the 3rd world to starve.
The liberal position is totally inconsistence and untenable though, especially when some of these same do gooders are against the right to suicide.

I also consider the fetus to be alive because: death is defined as when the body begins to decompose and the organs stop, therefore life begins when compostion of the fetus begins aka from the moment of conception onwards....btw I am extremely anti abortion for it is truly the greatest evil of our time and one day our county will look back at this period with shame and disgust (just like how we veiw slavery today)

I'm not going to debate my stance on abortion because I'll be here all day, but I will say that I was glad to find out last week that it was Rick Santorum who sponsored the bill banning partial-birth abortion. Although he graduated from my former high school, I am strongly opposed to many, but obviously not all, of his views. As long as the Partial-Birth Abortion Act isn't threatened by a democratic, pro-choice senate, I won't be voting for him as President.

A human body isn't public property, otherwise you could legally force a person to be a prostitute and give you sexual service if you wanted. There are all sorts of perverse and totalitarian outcomes that would occur if you give the government or the public rights over an individual's body.

@85RetroFan - You don't have the right to force someone to keep you inside their body because that would require giving that life or the government ownership of the host's body. If someone leaves their dog in your house it may not be your property but you don't have to keep it in your house and the owner of the dog can't force you to give the dog shelter. Same with a baby. The mother doesn't HAVE to give it shelter.
It would all require rewriting the American Constitution.

Are you referring to the baby? If so you're correct but the baby is IN her body. You can't force someone to keep something in their body if they don't want to. If you give the government that right they also have the right to put whatever else they want in you, like control chips. They also have the right to prevent you from having tumors or damaged organs removed.
The baby has the right to life....outside of her body.

@85RetroFan - I think life is a blessing but I don't think it's SO much of a blessing that the government should have ownership of everyone's bodies just to ensure babies will be born: most of whom will end up either wards of the state, in adoption homes (with a significant number being given to bad parents who only want them for money), or with neglectful or abusive parents. So what would be the gain? Mostly just more overpopulation and the government having totalitarian powers over your body.

He's actually right that biologists don't doubt that a human embryo is human life; but the individual cells that make up the body are human and are alive. It has to do with what definition of "life" you are referencing. The question is when an embryo becomes a person. The thing is no one can agree on an objective classification for this. Therefore, the issue is currently being judged on the basis of belief systems, and this is the root of conflict.

Maybe I'm missing something, but from what I know about biology, the statement that a fertilized egg is the beginning of human life seems fairly indisputable. It meets all the requirements of living organism, and its certainly a member of the human species. However this has little bearing on whether a single cell, bundle of cells or even a baby-shaped embryo incapable of thought or survival outside the womb should be considered a person or granted its own rights.
