I always felt that too. But as you stated the underarm carry would smash the spear and also the butt end had a bronze point too. How would they avoid stabbing the hoplites behind them with an underhand carry? i was under the impression that the rear hoplites would basically carry their weapons upright and stab any hoplite that was caught up under the push of the converging phalanxes.
@hmldjr The hoplite drill, as best as we can tell, had three ranks with lowered spears and the remainder then held them more upright. In theory the ideal drill would have the fourth rows and back forming a bristleing wall suspended between 45-90 degrees (to hamper missile weapons). Hoplite warfare usually started witht he stare off and then one side would shuffle toward the other and jabbing and a little manoeuvreing would occur. Then once an advantage perceived a crush. To avoid stabbing...
@hmldjr ....your friends behind you with the butt of your spear. The front ranks would probably hold their spears near the butt (possibly a counter wieght but we are not sure). In the crush however the rear ranks had to rely on their shield to protect them from lower friendly spear butts. That said it appears that you usually held the spear closer to the but rather than the centre- another advantage of underarm.
the guy on the far side that was giving orders at the end of the movie had a pretty awesome helmet. I didn't know hoplites wore two crests on the same helmet
No you are wrong. the ottomans had money and could buy a lot of mercenaries. they were calvary heavy and their infantry was weak. Machiavelli wrote a good description of the ottoman army and its weaknesses. if they would have fought the Roman armies at their peak they would have got no where. The best thing about the ottomans was they were able to accept other peoples and absorb them. The only reason they took Constantinople was the Sultan could buy cannons and mercenaries.
@hmldjr The Charge would be more effective underarm although relief on pottery and from Greek writers- not the best sources but all we have, show warriors charing shield first with the spear either underarm extended or tucked up not aiming at the opponent. The danger was if you charge with spear exteneded in the wrong circumstance then you will snap your spear on the opponents shield and get nowhere. It was more of a push then stab affair. But even still the spear would be held under-arm
I'm not part Peloponesean in any way, I'm Irish, Scotch, German and English, put I give props to the great and noble Greeks, from one fighting race to another.
@TheMRDELI333 If the ottomans would have have fought the armies of Alexander at his peak they would have failed. The only reason the Ottomans were successful was they had more money than anyone else of the period and could buy more mercenaries than the other peoples of their era. The Ottomans failed miserably at Lepanto and Venice. If the united christian states of Europe would have pushed their advantage after Lepanto, Anatolia would be Christian today.
@hmldjr dude u are wrong the ottomans had money but they had power in their arms the movie 300 spartans should be 300 ottomans cuz ottoman poeple are stronger then any other i dont say for show it is so and how we fall was that many countries attacked us so they were way more and we survived that but made a big lost wich is the empire cuz there is only turkey left from the ottoman empire...
Spanish people have a fairly good Greek accent! The have actually pretty good weaponry reproducted to a quite high accuracy not often found in all similar Greek groups - it has to be noted that Greek hoplite re-enactement groups are usually more recent and not so well studied as their Roman equivalent. Lets not forget that these are people paying their equipment and one has to take into account that only the full thorax costs more than 2000 euros - even the bronze used is a non-commercial type.
This group is really excellent! Their reconstructed weaponry has high fidelity to the archaiological findings, it does not play on impressions. I liked the guy who painted that insect on his shield (true, that back then they would paint anything on their shields for good luck or for making the enemy fear them or even distracting them!)

the only thing about the charge would they have carried the spear under handed during the charge or over handed? very impressive reenactment though.
