The modern Wushu blade that flexes is lighter (and faster) but def not the traditional style for this weapon. The heaviest Kwan Dao available these days seems to be around 13 pounds and def does not have that Wushu blade on it.
The blade is flimsy so damage will not be caused by the blade nor would you ruin your fighting blade. They also don't want a student in training messing up and letting it fly into the crowd and ruining someone's day.
Wushu steel is used for training purposes and competitions due to its light weight... Combat Steel (whatever) is heavier and more difficult to train with, experience is required to train with a weapon of such form; as the name states, this is used for Combat...
i saw this weapon in a martial art shop when i was looking for sai and when i saw it da the top of a shelf i was liek woa i want to lern how to use that one
depends...if you're looking at a traditional kwandao, it should not bend. if you're looking at a wushu steel kwandao, the blade is designed to snap and bend to make "impressive" sounds. someone once told me the sound allows judges to assess if the proper force is applied to the moves.
i mean, i've been cut pretty badly by my wushu steel kwandao (not to mention broadsword, too), but chances are the ones used in combat most likely did not flop around and were stiff.
@rh6rd I confirm, they definately did not. The flexi steel is a) light for the purpose of speed and b) noisey for nothing other than effect. My kwan dao is solid steel. It weighs 8.2 kilos which though does not sound like much makes for a heavy weapon. It is solid steel in the blade, hollow steel (not wood mind you) in the handle and brass in the blade guard and spear end.
When was the last time anyone needed a KwanDao for a real battle? Next time a real battle happens and youre involved bring your Kwandao and we'll all see just how long you last! *LOL*
@bladesaint21 It takes a while to be able to wield it sensibly and yet heavier ones weighing 80 kilos and more were made in past days to train the body in extreme conditioning (not combat which is a misconception). In combat these weapons would have mainly have been used as an anti cavalry weapon to cut through saddle straps/horses legs/the rider, etc.
This is indeed one of the best if not the best weapon of the time before gunpowder was invented. Quick, long, and sharp. But all weapons has a weakness and this one's weakness is if the opponent can get close enough and make the blade behind him. then the opponent can take out the blade and finish off the guy....
Powerful yes, long yes, faster than a sowrd, NO, well yes if the guy on the vombat field is using fucking worthless piece of shit steel like this and weighs 2kg. I'd be more afraid of a guy with a kwan dao weighing in about 15 kg and uses it to it's fullest benefit. End of story. But then again this is contemporary wushu and is for show.
Thing about a wushu steel blade is that the snap isn't for show... it indicates to judges that one is using proper power in their strikes. I'm more impressed that he got that form spot-on than the weight or realism of the blade. Still, a true reclining moon blade should be much heavier, not to mention sharper.
I think if you are going to use a green dragon blade, it should be at least 15 pounds. The weapon is unique in its weight and power, stuff like this is just staff with a floppy piece of metal on it.
I agree, I don't like the spring steel but I made an acception when I started training with this weapon. If you try and do the moves at that speed with the 14 lb monster I have it'll tear your shoulder up.
there's a lot of misnaming, etc. Since often Da-Dao is a blanket term... I have been trying to find Da-Dao forms on youtube (as in the machete-like one) but no luck so far excep the Ba Gua one
Yeah, in another wushu video that I've watched, someone made an interesting point. They said that the weapons are floppy so that their "snapping" sound can indicate to judges whether or not the competitor is using appropriate force in his form.
A lot of FLOWERY GARBAGE! If that was a combat steel weapon I would be somewhat impressed. Just a lot of wasted movement. Gives "Real Kungfu" a bad name
you're a dumbass, this is wushu which is non combat, its all routines. It is a competition this guy is in, and if he wants to win more complex movements are necessary. Kung fu is just a generic term for martial arts from china, so there is no real kung fu. grow up you loser
modern wushu it's entertaining. tradional kung fu is very real. this is asia! nobody is going to learn something useless. the masters of old were too selfish and brought their art to the grave or killed in chinaduring the revolution
true say. ive been training in wuhan for a year now met some big names w.e its ok training but its like only for performing. if you wanna do the body part take qi gong its the bestaX100000000000000000000000000000000000000euro.
this is for wolfmoonwatcher. Kwan Dao is not a broadsword. u dont do crazy moves on a weapon like that. After other videos i watched of Kwan Dao this is actually the best ive seen on utube.
kwan dao is obviously not a broadsword.I have friends at other wushu schools, and they use kwan dao in their routines like this. I'm not saying its realistic, but this is how the sport is done. Watching video's on youtube doesn't give you insight on how how the taolu aspect of wushu is conducted.
@wolfmoonwatcher yes there is. Shaolin kung fu means the martial art of Shaolin for example. Other examples of kung fu are lohan boxing, choy li fut, bagua, eagle claw, five animals, hung and lau gar, wing chun and tai chi to name a few. Name callers be damned.
@AGENTORANGE007 meh, i usually find that people who say sh!te like this have usually missed the point and are not really all that knowledgeable about the fighting arts. Keep your quotations Mr and if you don't like it, don't watch it.
I'm actually glad that they do---i would have lost my thumb yesterday had my blade been any sharper/stronger. as it is, i just took a chunk of it off. haha, i just learned a couple of new moves yesterday and executed them waaay too fast. haha.
Excellent find!

The right name is Kwan Dao because this weapon was orginlaly used by general kwan.

Is that blade supposed to be flimsy?

Do you guys know a site where i can buy a plastic copy of one of those weapons?
dragonfireteam 3 years ago
i wouldnt recomend a plastic one. The one he uses is a combat steel i think its called, and it cant cut, thats why its flexible
yannis3108 3 years ago
i believe that's more likely to be wushu steel, but otherwise correct
soultaker 3 years ago
@yannis3108 Actually, it can cut, but this is not a combat version, this is wushu steel.

try moving that fast with the 10 kg kwan dao its ok till you stop good form though
wongfeika 4 years ago
Not a traditional form--you aren't supposed to use a 10 lbs+ weapon for it
9sectionwhip 4 years ago
wushu is a contemporary sport. So obviously it won't use the original weapon but the wushu variant.

@wongfeika I hear dat. Not an easy weapon.
