I love how everyone criticizes her. "Oh she needs to perfect her landings." "Oh Maloney did better." She is not the only gymnast who takes minor or in this case, major steps. She is one of the best gymnast to date.

she needs to work on sticking her landings better. i've never been in gymnastics but i'm sure that it would look a LOT better if she worked on sticking the landing instead of always taking huge steps when she lands. i watched a lot of gymnasts who stuck their landings and it looks a lot better and cleaner.

i love her but Shawn Johnson can NOT stick a landing on beam, vault or bars. its always that little step and its sooooo frustrating to watch.

@96horseluvr what vault did maroney do; i'm not sure cos i didn't watch her. but most of the time if you execute an Amanar you first get a higher start value and if you pull it off with just the step that shawn did you still get a higher score than other people who might stick or a take a small step on a much easier vault.

@chinghxd If she quoted herself correctly, Maroney said she's been doing the Amanar for over three years, so I'm sure that's what she competed. But I do agree, there does seem to be a pretty strong discrepancy in the score there. At Worlds McKayla just barely broke 16 and she had the smallest step (in the .1 deduction range) where Shawn was clearly in the .3 range. I believe they both have good form and power, but if this was a 16 McKayla should have scored much higher on hers.

@TheBrookelizabeth21 Maroney competed an Amanar but the CoP is much tighter these days. The execution scores across all apparatus are lower because of that. Compared to Maroney's vault this is overscored but that was the CoP of the day.

@96horseluvr The code of points is different. They use the score out of 10, then add on the level of difficulty. So in previous years, there were girl doing simple routines and some doing super hard tumbling passes and don't always stick them. So the new code of points helps the girls who do hard tumbling passes

@freeBITCH0 The code has changed a lot, the average score is a lot lower now because there are bigger execution deductions. So Maroney's 16 is really a lot better than Shawn's 16 which wouldn't be a 16 today.

It's NOT her excess of power (she doesn't even complete the vault), it's because she lands facing vertically and takes a step over herself to stay up.

Notice how she always steps OVER herself? Yea, that's because she doesn't complete the twists before landing.

@idonttan she does a yurchenko 2.5 here?...i think. but anywho. those faults are DIFFICULT. like nastia may be the AA olympic champion but she is physically incapable of doing such a hard vault; that might give you an idea of how hard it is. for her to land on to feet and only take one step out is pretty impressive.

perfect score is a 20.. 10 in difficulty and 10 in execution.. but it's either impossible or near

there is no 20 because there is no A score of a 10, especially in the new code of points. A perfect score is still a 10 in execution added to the a score, so a perfect vault will score differently depending on the initial start value.

The start value of this vault is 6.5, which means that she can get a 16.500 maximum score (the other 10 points is for execution) and if she does, she'll get a "perfect score" for this vault. So that means that if she gets a 16.000, it means that she has 9.500 in execution and 6.5 for the difficulty.
