I have a Berner and he is the BEST dog ever!!! he is sooo lazy and just wants to sleep on our couch all day!!! when i take him on walks he lays down in the middle of the road!!!! haha :p
they nearly always make it sound as though every feature of these dogs was selectively breed on purpose. That is far too time and energy consuming and most people in the past and today lacked the resources for that
i was wondering if the berner would be right for me because i love big fluffy dogs shedding isnt a problem, but i also like dogs that can be trained pretty much easily, i want to do drafting and agility. i also kinda am a beginner but i pet sit dogs and volunteer at a dog shelter so is this a good match.
Each time I watch this video it reminds me of my 15 year old Bernese dog that passed away last winter :( I grew up with him and he will always be a part of my life... Best dog ever
I was the main care taker of a beagle from my middle school days all the way thru his last day on earth just a few years ago. I'm glad my mom made me take care of him since I learned huge thing responsibility that way. I also want to adopt a berner once I live off of my college campus. I think she'd make a wonderful dog, but for a college student... I'm just unsure lol.
I have a bernese... he's adorable! He's almost three... but he never ever works, like pulls, or anything... he just plays. And when we bought him, the man selling him, told us his life span, but my dad thinks that it's only that short, or whatever because they're known for working. Because mine is only used as a house pet, does that mean he might, have a better chance of living a little bit longer then most??
would this be a dog that is cabable to stay out on a dog box(chained) for about 7 or 8 hours an then inside. for school reasons. and only till it is fully housetrained. (that shouldnt take to long)
Bernese Mountain Dogs are not very affectionate; they're reserved and stoic at least the ones I've met. I like dogs that will wiggle in excitement and give kisses.
I saw one in town today and my God they are BEAUTIFUL! My heart just melted. If I have a good amount of space when I'm older I will have to get one of these dogs. I love the 'friendly giant' type.
We are on our third Berner. First lived to be 11, second died of cancer at 5 :(, and our third is currently 8 and still putting a smile on our faces. THE BEST DOG ON THE PLANET
Uh, I have a Berner named Regulus. He helps me at my job. He pulls around grains and hay in a cart. He gets along well with my cat Bastet. He's 14 years old and he can still pull that cart. He loves to work with me in the field. I love him, he's the best, he was so easy to train. Even Bastet can work. She wakes me up and brings me my glasses.
@dahbombdokuroaisu That is a good dog.My family is on our third berner. The first one we got before I was born 16 years ago, he had to be put down because he had gotten a tuber that started in the kidneys and went to the lungs. Our second we got when our first was about 7 years old, I was 6. Titen, our second passed away at the beginning of July this year, around mid-March this year we got our 3rd one. You are lucky that your berner is still with you.
@dahbombdokuroaisu what do you feed him? i have a 2 1/2 yr old female Berner and was just wondering what you feed yours? i wanna keep my girl around for a long time!
@dilyla717 Well, thing is I live on a agricultural farm. So I feed my pets fresh food which my son and make for them. I know you could find recipes for fresh animal food online. It's just the matter if you can afford it or not.
PS: Regulus died this morning. He was attacked by a wolf pack. I loved him so much. Just always love you pets! They might be gone the next day. And no, I'm not hunting the pack down. They're trying to survive, just like we are!

We had a Bernese who, unfortunately, died at the age of 9 from pancreatic cancer.
He was the best, most lovable... carpet ^_^, we ever had... Working? Not really his thing, lol.
It's been almost a decade since he died, but I still find myself wishing I could give a hug to that little bear.
Still, a warning to all: he did develop some aggressiveness problems in the last 2-3 years of his life. Behavior problems are found in the North American lineage of the bread, as well as a shorter lifespan.
I had two of these wonderful dogs growing up. They were litter mates, so they got along very well. Such loving dogs! One can never find an equal. But we lost them both to bone cancer when they were 12. They defiantly didn't want to work, unless it was pulling sleds in the snow. :)
I would love to get one but, on average, we get about a two week stretch here in Arkansas in the summer that hits 110+ degrees :( Can't imagine that being comfortable or good for such a furry dog.
@theAntilli actually berners have gotten smaller over the years( look at berners from the 70s in holland, hungary,) they used to be somewhat of giant dogs and u still get the odd bbig bernerut they don't do good in shows becausejudges want to breed awayfrom massive size.2nd berners are all around farm dogs, they can but not always herd, protect, and of course when swiss dairy got popular in the early 1900s, pull carts. they were never reallyavalanche rescue dog, that belong to ghet saint bernard
@Vissor I've been around berners for years..been to so many dog shows in canada and europe and the biggest male I've ever seen was in hungary at 148 lbs. i don't believe 175, although it may look like it with the coat...and the standard is 100-130 for males..
@amirjon The owner told us it was a 175lbs and it sure looked like it. I was one of the largest dogs I've ever seen. It was as big as my neighbor's St. Bernard.
Beautiful dogs. I thought about getting one until I read about their average life span. I couldn't imagine losing a young dog to cancer. I hope there are breeders working to better the breed--sounds like there was an extreme genetic bottleneck when they "rescued" the breed from extinction. Has anyone tried outcrossing?
Considering all the comments on both this vid and other 101 clips, I'm starting to get a strong suspicion that the UK/USA breeds of these animals is starting to diverge somewhat. All these clips represent the USA standards but don't seem to take note of what the rest of the world is doing (as usual lol)
so by the commetns i guess it doesnt need THAT much space. could i keep one in a large apartment with 2-3 HOURS RUNNINg/JOGGING? oh and i go hiking alot
.....okay i have a question for berner owners... do they live long? please be very honest.. I cant afford high vet bills, and i would be in an emotional wreck if they died at about 7.5/8 years. I own a eskmio and she is 7.. and it feels like YESTERDAY that i got her... and thinking about a dog dying at 7 makes me sick.. I am deciding between a husky and a berner..for a second dog...helppp...
@babiismoochZ My berner lived to be about 10 years old before we had to put him down. It was really really hard to say goodbye- I cried for like three days straight, but berners are still some of the most amazing, loving dogs ever. During his life the only real health issues he had were ear infections but nothing serious so we never had to deal with expensive vet bills. Hope that helps!
I lost my beautiful Bernese Mountain Dog at the age of 10 in 2007. She was easily the best dog to have ever lived. She was so smart, training her was so easy. She was so eager to please. And they are working dogs, that girl needed to run all the time! :) But the biggest thing about Berners is that they are family dogs and need to be up your butt 24/7. Personally I find them to be the best breed ever, not only are they beautiful, they also have the best temperament and mind. :)
I have one too. We usually refer to her as "a big dummy" but we love her. We only say that because she is super huge and acts like a puppy. Her name is Sophie but I call her Soap. :) One mistake that I made was to always be with her when she was a puppy. Now she doesn't leave me alone! And her tail! That thing is a personal whip. Trust me, it hurts.
Skidmarkish, in my experience with the berner they are fine off leash as long as you take the time to train them as a puppy. Mine was very easy to train and she is off leash a lot. She goes to the beach, park and dog park off leash and she never takes off or anything. However she was trained as a puppy to behave this way, so take the time to do so. Honestly the dog will be fine in an apartment too, mine never wants to be outside, just in the house with her family
I absolutely love my berner to death. She is such a sweetheart and so loving. It is true what they say about them maturing late mentally. My berner is 5 and still acts like a younger dog. I live in So Cal. and she does fine. She prefers to stay inside, buy has her daily walks for exercise. She is amazing with little kids letting them pull on her ears or tail and never doing more than kissing them back. I highly recommend this breed for families with kids or anyone that wants a faithful companion
how would this dog do in a condo? i have like 3 parks right next to my building and a dog zone, anyone have advice? also a couple acre lot that is fenced where you can let them off leash

As soon as I have the space to keep one, I'm getting a Berner! I love their sweet easy-going personalities and everything about them fits right into my lifestyle. But I believe a dogowner must bring certain things to the table as well... too bad some ppl forget that when buying/adopting a dog
I need to buy a dog but I can't let him in the house my mom is scared of dogs only in the garden and since I live in egypt its very hot and science its originally a deert it gets to cold at night so which dog should I but ?
OH MY GOSH I LOVE BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOGS! THEIR BEAUTIFUL AND FRIENDLY AND I AM GOING TO GET ONE SOON! ANY TIPS? AS SOON AS I HEARD ABOUT THEM I LOOKED THEM UP ON THE INTERNET AND I SERIOULSY FELL IN LOVE! BMD'S ARE MY FAVOURITE DOG, THEN BOXERS NOVA SCOTIA DUCK TOLLING RETRIEVERS NOUFINLAND AND BRITTANY! DOGS RULE!
Best dog ever. Loving, VERY affectionate, calm and at the same time playful. Seriously, this is the most beautiful breed ever. I miss my bernese, Pyro! Luckily I'll get another one soon
my dog lived 11 years long! and she could have lived longer if there hadn't been a bad infection :( even our vet couldn't help her :( i miss her so much
i used to have female bernese mountain dog 10 yars ago and i must say that she was the most intelegent dog i ever had, so beautiful breed :) in my country are so rare, i wonder if there is 2 or 3 in whole country, so is very difficult to find one. It's so sad that they have very short life :( mine was 6years old when she died :( i didn't know that they all live mostly 8 years so i changed my mind for taking one more of this breed cuz i don't think i can handle the early loss of my dog once more
Is this a good dog for hot weather? Are they prone to heatstroke??
I'm living in Thailand and looking to find a new dog. Chowchow is my first choice but they are very prone to heat. I want my dog to stay happy and active even in hot and humid climate. Is this the one for me?
we too miss our bernese. best and most loyal dog we ever had. the only problem she had was being a bit of a scaredy cat and downright paranoid during thunderstorms.
A Bernese mountain dog is NO WORKING dog!!! If you work a lot with them, they don't live long! I have 3 berners, where 1 of them is now 13 years! Only thing is, she loves "working" on the sofa, with the television on animal planet :)
@bcolemont is your dog overweight by any chance? i may be adopting one soon and don't know how much exercise she'll require. the video makes it sound like they need to be working all day long. also, do they really require a lot of space? my home is only a two bedroom bungalow
do you find that she gets overweight easily? i'm thinking of adopting a berner soon, but not sure...this video makes it seems like she'll need a lot of activity and a lot of space. i go on 30min walks 2x per day, but live in a two bedroom apartment.
Bernese Mountain Dogs shed ALOT! Lol... i used to have two, but one just passed away last night from cancer.... now I only have Gretta, who was older than she!
It's interesting that they were used predominantly as draft dogs, and yet I've neither seen not heard of any docked tails among this breed. Which is fine with me, because their tails are quite beautiful. :)
Bread to work? Oh dear. Anybody who's had a berner knows that they're bread to eat and recieve hugs. The only way they'll pull a cart is if there's a bone on the other side. Either way, best dogs ever.
What are Bernese like being left on their own during the day?
I really want one, I have waited for years to get a dog but I can't give up the day job. I thought about hiring a dog walker during the day, to break up the time he/she is alone.
@nickeroo if they are trainned and they have some room to wander around it shouldnt be a problem, but when you return it will demand tons of affection. I´ve seen them get very depressed when owners leave for a long period of time, say a couple days. I try to take the dogs with me as long as i travel by car or boat.
@turmoil23 thank you for the reply. That is encouraging to know. Attention when I get home won't be a problem at all. :) What about the time between when you get them as a puppy and them being trained enough to leave alone though! :/ If I was to get a puppy now, I could take a week off work to settle him in and get a walker etc, but then I'd need to go to work during the day. I'd never leave them for a couple of days though, not unless someone was looking after them.

i just saw one the other day and it was huge. the owner said it weighed 175lbs and it sure looked like it.
Vissor 9 months ago
@Vissor I've been around berners for years..been to so many dog shows in canada and europe and the biggest male I've ever seen was in hungary at 148 lbs. i don't believe 175, although it may look like it with the coat...and the standard is 100-130 for males..
amirjon 5 months ago

All these clips represent the USA standards but don't seem to take note of what the rest of the world is doing (as usual lol)

.....okay i have a question for berner owners... do they live long? please be very honest.. I cant afford high vet bills, and i would be in an emotional wreck if they died at about 7.5/8 years. I own a eskmio and she is 7.. and it feels like YESTERDAY that i got her... and thinking about a dog dying at 7 makes me sick.. I am deciding between a husky and a berner..for a second dog...helppp...
babiismoochZ 10 months ago

I love the Bernese and will own one one day!
barsakus 11 months ago

But I believe a dogowner must bring certain things to the table as well... too bad some ppl forget that when buying/adopting a dog

i used to have female bernese mountain dog 10 yars ago and i must say that she was the most intelegent dog i ever had, so beautiful breed :) in my country are so rare, i wonder if there is 2 or 3 in whole country, so is very difficult to find one.

@thaserty
no they're not good in heat, try a lab, or an Airedale.

A Bernese mountain dog is NO WORKING dog!!! If you work a lot with them, they don't live long! I have 3 berners, where 1 of them is now 13 years! Only thing is, she loves "working" on the sofa, with the television on animal planet :)

@bcolemont is your dog overweight by any chance? i may be adopting one soon and don't know how much exercise she'll require. the video makes it sound like they need to be working all day long. also, do they really require a lot of space? my home is only a two bedroom bungalow
farmerjane2011 10 months ago
@bcolemont
do you find that she gets overweight easily? i'm thinking of adopting a berner soon, but not sure...this video makes it seems like she'll need a lot of activity and a lot of space. i go on 30min walks 2x per day, but live in a two bedroom apartment.
farmerjane2011 10 months ago

Bernese Mountain Dogs shed ALOT! Lol... i used to have two, but one just passed away last night from cancer.... now I only have Gretta, who was older than she!
OnlyBerniesCB 1 year ago
It's interesting that they were used predominantly as draft dogs, and yet I've neither seen not heard of any docked tails among this breed. Which is fine with me, because their tails are quite beautiful. :)

Bread to work? Oh dear. Anybody who's had a berner knows that they're bread to eat and recieve hugs. The only way they'll pull a cart is if there's a bone on the other side. Either way, best dogs ever.

What are Bernese like being left on their own during the day?
I really want one, I have waited for years to get a dog but I can't give up the day job. I thought about hiring a dog walker during the day, to break up the time he/she is alone.
nickeroo 1 year ago
@nickeroo if they are trainned and they have some room to wander around it shouldnt be a problem, but when you return it will demand tons of affection. I´ve seen them get very depressed when owners leave for a long period of time, say a couple days. I try to take the dogs with me as long as i travel by car or boat.
turmoil23 1 year ago
@turmoil23 thank you for the reply. That is encouraging to know. Attention when I get home won't be a problem at all. :) What about the time between when you get them as a puppy and them being trained enough to leave alone though! :/ If I was to get a puppy now, I could take a week off work to settle him in and get a walker etc, but then I'd need to go to work during the day. I'd never leave them for a couple of days though, not unless someone was looking after them.
