That would have been hard for Diego not to take off his mask and show his father who he was. But I was glad later in season two when Alejandro said he knew that Diego was Zorro.
Hey, there's a moment in this episode where Zorro calls Garcia "a big fat pig - too lazy to ride and too afraid to fight!" Garcia TRIES to give him a smart, lippy response and only ends up insulting himself - "I am not the sort of big fat pig that's afraid to fight! I'm the kind of big . . . fat . . . pig . . ." Poor Garcia! To an essentially decent person like him, it's just asking too much to have him come up with a really barbed comeback - even for someone he's legally supposed to hate!
Great episode. As a child, watching was almost unbearable, and even years later I can still feel for Diego's fear, desperation and pain.
Nothing goes right. Two women are being abused, the dons will not listen, his father as much as calls him a coward, the soldiers won't take the bait, Zorro is nearly captured and Alejandro is shot. And his father wishes / hopes Zorro was his son -- like a knife in Diego's heart.
This was the episode where I fell in love with this show. Still am.
@hecate235 I know what you mean. The first two-thirds of this episode are really hard for me to watch - in its own way, so is the ending. And yet, for some reason, this third of "Monastario Sets a Trap" and the first few minutes of "Zorro's Ride Into Terror" (Season 1, Episode 8) are among my favorite in the entire series. Weird, huh?
It's moments like the close of this episode and the start of the next when you know who the heroes are. How is it Disney can't make shows like this anymore?
This has to be one of my favorite sequences in the whole series - the point when Zorro is tending his father's wound, the dad thinks he recognizes him, and Zorro promises him that "You will have many years left, Father, to live and dream." And then in Season 2, in Monterrey, we find out that Don Alejandro knows who Zorro is. I wonder when he found out?
@AutobotNutcase Actually, I wonder - there's a moment when you're going to sleep when you're not quite awake and not quite out when you know you're about to conk out and you can never be quite sure whether you really heard something or only dreamed it - ALMOST sure, but not entirely. I wonder if Don Alejandro was in that in-between place when Zorro called him "Father." Did he hear it and remember, and is that when he became SO SURE? If so, he must've kept a real close watch from here on out!
One of the best episodes ever. It must be really tough to pretend you're a coward when actually you're the one who really fights and care for the people. Every hero passes through it, but in Zorro's case, it's even worse, because he's always under his father's pressure to make something by using the force.
That was el commandante, he's supposed to be a good shot (he is also better at sword fighting, he doesn't win from Zorro but he puts up a better fight). However those soldiers shooting at Zorro are lousy shooters (and bad fencers)
i always loved this episode. very emotional at the ending.. you can see how Diego's(as zorro) mouth makes little moves when he lookes at his father, as if he has to cry..
How close to reality is Don Alejandro's dream, because behind the mask of Zorro is his son, Diego. If only Diego could reveal this secret to those most dear, but then, they would be at risk, too.
MAN noone can outcast Monastario as villan man I just totaly love him to bad they did not have him anymore in it the other villans just to annoying and duimb.
More childhood memories... This was always my favo, showing from which side of the family Diego has his wits; clever old fox, he knows it's his son now!! ^^
This is the first time that this show made me cry! Beautiful episode!!!

The scene between Don Alejandro and Zorro brought tears to my eyes. I lost my father when I was 9. I pray he would be proud of me now.
Many thanks to you CorporalReyes for uploading these. So many happy memories brought back to life. :)
God bless.

I remember in a later episode that Alejandro knew that Diego was Zorro... I wonder if he realised it in this episode.

They always miss when shooting Zorro, but the first time they shoot Don Alejandro, they hit him.

well, in later episodes, you learn Alejandro knew Diego was Zorro. Maybe this was when he figured it out.

Yes indeed. It must feel horrible if your father thinks your a 'loser' espescially in that time (Because then it was important to be brave)

His Father is a sleep (or something like that) when he says that. So Don Alejandro haven't heard him.

I really love this part.
I always loved it the most, actually, the care of Zorro for Alejandro. And the end, when he says 'Father'.
I also like the way Don Alejandro sees up to Zorro, and of course i like Zorro's smile xd

Notice the pain in Diego's/Zorro's face from 09:00 to 09:02. It is a stark contrast to the otherwise light-hearted and humorous Zorro.
