I'm not a Tchaikovky fan at all, but maestro von Karajan was one of the greatest in my life time. The fact that 43 years after the ll-nd world war he was still investigated for his past is beyond the joke. For heavens sake he was a MUSICIAN, not a "Feldwebel or a Feldmarschall"!! Pure madness, when will this extortion ever end? May he rest in peace.
I know I know. Director Roman Polansky still can not come back to the US....after the fact how he lost his wife...which was tragic...... he cna not come back, not even to get an Oscar nomination or award...after some 35-40 years they are still trying to get him. My friend I was not saying that Maestro von Karajan had anything to do with that regime. I merely stated some facts from history.
Oh yes he is. Big time. The best living pianist from who is alive today. His artistry and deliverance, virtuosity superceedes anyone else's in all those three qualities.
Herbert von Karajan conductor in 1988, Kissin is 17 years old, so this is 1988...so this is one of Karajan's last appearances before he died in 1989. This is in 1988 while here in the US Karajan was under investigation by the US Justice Department over allegations of involvement in Nazi persecution. The case against him was dropped when he died in 1989 a year after this was recorded. Strange world. But great musicians regardless.
This is fucked. He's so young, but the piano is perfect. It's so easy to see how he hears the music in his head. Very expressive. I understand what he 'means'.
@983215ljhlkadbspig6y my thoughts exactly.... it's like he's either possessed or he's a 60 year old man full of crazy life experience trapped in a 17 year old body
This brings tears to my eyes! So splendid, so magical. An unequaled performance save that of Cliburn surely!! And Evgeny being so young at the time! Sublime!
I'm a little confused. The conductor looks like Karajan and conducts like Karajan but it says this was performed by the London Festival Orchestra. I never knew Karajan lead the London Festival Orchestra,, Any help here?
@tjtheplay what do you mean? why people here are so dumb and cannot understand even a simple thing with an indirect sense? esp. those who listen to the classics.
i think we can safely forget lang lang. In football terms, he's no more than a journeyman! Take the big buck, and convince millions of his chinese compatriots that he's a real western musician who can play bach, beethoven, liszt, brahms, schubert, and convince those poor parent-pushed tryers that they're Horowitz, Richter, Kempff, Curzon, Solomon, Rubinstein in the making! Does he relly think that his facial expressions while playing, can convince us that he's anything more than a charlatan?
Hmm. I actually like that he's taking a conservative tempo. It makes it sound more showy and more like he's enjoying the beautiful melodies Tchaikovsky composed. This concerto still bores me, but that may just be my problem. Bravo to the young Kissin and the masterful Karajan for producing beautiful music!!
Kissin did a great service to Karajan in this beautiful performance. No wonder it brought tears to his eyes at the end of the performance. Two thumbs up.
Thank you so very much for uploading this! You don't happen to have the 2nd and 3rd movements, too, do you? Kissin is my favorite. I admire and am inspired by him more than words can tell...
there is something about his hair and those opening chords that just works so well

@Louxorios - cute. He was only a spot in the horizon here. But now, Lang Lang could not TOUCH Kissin. To each his own...

He's playing at 17 years old with a Philharmonic Orchestra....Started at age 2 ...so in those
past 15 years he was still learning, studying ...Kissin is a true prodigy. As if he was an extension of that grand piano himself....Amazing....WOW.
