  • No theres no dci influence in this band its still showtime all the way. See for ya'll who don't know about showtime style we have all different kinds all syles we bring to the feild. Thank you.

  • I beg to differ. According to a conversation I had with Mr. Bethea about 2 months ago, you guys do indeed have DCI influence as well as Showband. It's great to be able to perform both styles. As far as your sound and technique, it is only rivaled by Southern University in my humble opinion. Great job!

  • @qjbomb1 southern university dont even compare heck they not even influenced by dci and they dont have a clean sound

  • ok. yall bringin somethin new... good job stayin in line yall.... keep it up yall

  • bones goin off on bueatiful.......smh.....damn

  • COMPLETE BAND!!!!!!! I love the core style drilling technique, and the sound is mind-blowing! Norfolk State really bridges the gap between HBCU (traditional-marching styles) and PWI (core-marching styles). I just wish that they had more invitations like the JSU, FAMU, BCU, and SU.

  • Hell NSU was there 3 years in a row 2009 was the frist time since 2006 they were not there but I love NSU sound man it match their name i have much respect for them.

  • ummm!!!! nsu went two years 2007 and 2008

  • nsu has only been thier two years 2007 and 2008

  • @mrsinister6 They have been there more then two years.

  • what the hell are you talking about, they were not even there in 2009, and they went in 2007 and 2008. where are you getting your info from?

  • @mrsinister6 they was there 2006,2007,2008 buddy I never said 09.

  • ummmm only two times guy, 2007 and 2008 and this is coming from a former legion member. who are you getting your info from?

  • @TravelerofFortune my bad yall right

  • We went 07 and 08...not 06.

  • can really see the DCI influence on the band..

from what I hear they follow some right?

but undoubtedly, the best HBCU band as far as breaking barriers is concerned nowadays..

  • like 2 people from their snare sectino marched Blue Devils

i heard im not sure though

  • Cadets

  • @mrsinister6 this isnt cadets

  • @347826able you need to read a couple of more post back, i was answering someones question. and i know this isnt the cadets

  • WOW..They say never judge a book by its cover and I did. I was wrong. They is FYE!! Great and powerful...Alright BCU and FAMU Watch out..

  • trumpets are the voice of the band! always!

  • Truuuuuuuuueee!!!!!!

  • tubas are the boom the power lol

    K-PHI-B09-07

  • can u say a superior mix of cleanliness and power!!

  • Wow...Behold the Green and Gold!!!!! I love my Alma mater!!!! Trom Phi!

  • Now that's a full, powerful but CLEAN sound. I love their concept. Strong but clean screamers and powerful trombones. Too many marching bands today don't understand that the tbone is THE most important marching band instrument.

  • trobones r up there, but percussion is the most important because they cary the band;; they hold tempo; provide grove;; during parade inbetween songs, the drummline is still playin while the rest of the band gets a break;;; not to take anything away from the trombones, but the druumline weights the most

  • tru that but with out tubas a band is not a band. come on now that bottom is just so juicy

  • hear hear XD

  • Thanks people its just that I felt bad cause of your announcer I was on the field saying please be quiet over the music. I was boiling on the turf.

  • I am a Hampton University Marching Pirate from the mid and late 80's. Calling it honest, I am VERY IMPRESSED with NSU! The formations were sharp and the sound was nice and well balanced. Damn good job NSU!!!!

  • They need to get rid of that GARBAGE ANNOUNCER and get the one they had in 2007! He did less talking and was very classy in his announcement of the Legion. This guy was ANNOYING!!!

  • beautiful

  • IMO they have the best way of getting on the field.. going to formations like that

    it's original lol

  • Take dat Hampton!!! i wish ppl would stop sleepin on NSU cus dey show up 2 show out each n every time. Dey represent VA well. 2 bad dey wnt be at honda n 09

  • Huck fampton!

  • Beautiful yo!

  • Behoooooooooooooooooolllllllllllldddddddddd the Green and Gold.

  • I have much respect for NSU Marching Band!!! Please come back to the Battle of the Bands in 2009!!

  • Sorry to tell you they wont be back in 2009 buddy

  • I have give NSU props, nice full sound ..bones on point...great job!

    '99

    100

  • This is one of the best sounding bands I've ever heard in my life!!!! Mr. Adams, the head band director, was one of my band directors at JSU before the Lord blessed him with this band. Mr. Adams is a musical genious!!!! The trombone is his horn so there's no wonder they sound lyke this! One of his assistants marched with me in the Boom and she is hell on her horn too! Way to go NSU! I think I have a tear running down my face... tears of joy, joy, joy!!!

  • Mr. Adams is assistant band director* But either way... you are perfectly right. PIA is a musical behemoth.

Adams has the whole low brass section on lock!

NSU is one of the best sounding bands of all time, I believe.

  • coudnt agree with you more

  • Treat Her Like A Lady is nice. I'm biased towards that song though. Plus, nobody plays it. This is the first time I've heard it from a band. Good stuff.

  • I absolutely love Norfolks band. I met a few of them at Battlefest at their university thy are always great.

  • Treat her like a lady sounds soooooooooooo damn GOOD!!!

  • What was the flag tune it sounds great. Was it Teddy Pedergrass?

  • thats the temptions like a lady

man i wish i could have been there

  • the flag tune was Beauty by dru hill

  • i thought it was Treat Her Like A Lady?.

  • nah it was treat her like a lady

  • ur right but they did twurl at the climax of beauty. I got them mixed up cause earlier in the season make u feel beautiful into beauty was a strait flag tune. And cause they twurled to both in this vid. But ur right.

  • Things Change and people get old. Thats what happened I believe in this case lol but I mean if you look at the show it was great but I was on the field saying SHUT THE HELL UP to the announcer but I mean Im sure he could not have heard me.

  • Here's another ANNOUNCER criticism! Whatever happen to the "Moniker Pause".

This is where the LEGION would stop playing which would que the crowd to its now famous moniker. At 1:11 or 1:34 the band would stop playing, followed by Mr Staten's: Ladies & Gentlemen, "BEHOLD THE GREEN & GOLD"! This would give the Maximum Impact of the moniker. It used to be done at the beginning and end of each show. I see now they just play through it. You can tell it doesn't have the same effect. Hmmmmm.....?

  • After further review, maybe this critcism should fall on the band or the show designer who should incorporate the pause. Somewhere in time, this has been lost. ???

I'm still hate'n on this announcer though.

  • In all fairness, that pause for "BEHOLD THE GREEN & GOLD" works wonders at a home game where the crowd knows what needs to be done during the pause. But at an event like this, where MOST of the people there are NOT aware of that tradition, the pause might not have the same affect with only one small section out of tens of thousands of people responding.

  • spartangirl: If this were the 80's or 90's, I would agree with you. But this is the 21st century. Nearly everyone knows about YouTube. Also, the shows are repetitive and do not change much now. Observe BCU's 08 performance. Damn near the whole dome knows "Lets Go Wildcats". I sure YouTube and their repetitive performance of that song helps out in the crowds participation.

  • I would hate to disagree with you my friend even with youtube people still don't understand NSU tradition. You have to be a band by way of following or beinf part of one for people who just get to see these bands at events like this wouldn't and didn't know what to say. The reason everybody knows BCU "Lets Go Wildcats" is because alot of high schools play that as a fight/stand song so fans are able to join but Behold The Green & Gold" is not like. Just like Tusegee "Ball and Parlay" I was hype..

  • SO, TRUE...Me being a following and a product of an HBCU, I know most, if not, all of the HBCU bands fanfares/fight or stand songs. Tuskegee can play the hell out of "Come on Everybody" the intro at every game when it kickoffs.

  • to it but people around me was like what the hell are they playing and why are you so hype. Also one of the of the clips of TU somebody ask what song it was and the person recording it said"Neck" lol. The point i'm making is even with youtube alot of people that only see these bands 1 or 2 times a year wont understand the tradition of the program. The only reason i understand it and it took me awile is because i have seen NSU a few times i been around HBCU band since i was little.

  • Did you see the precision on the field. All of the shapes and lines are straight?

  • Get off your own balls. They were not all straight

And THats from a Legion Alumni

    FromTheTopRopes

  • I think you meant the other bands are almost up there with NSU cause they are by far better as far as musically inclined. Everything they play is at a higher level or musicianship and they all hold their horns up when they play did I mention march 90s which all takes a lot more energy and ability.

  • yesss geometric shapes....i tell u what though ya'll some playin fools and them some twirling fools too...i give ya'llprops and respects...almost up der with BETHUNE COOKMAN AND FAMU!!!

HAIL WILDCATS!!!! MIGHTY MARCHING WILDCATS @ THAT!!!

    GOOD JOB NSU!

  • Almost. NSU is up there with both bands.

  • @302404386 they pass them both!

  • @302404386 NSU THAT IS

  • I was at the Honda this past year and last year with the LEGION made their first appearance. I think what killed the LEGION was their announcer. He was terribly annoying!! They should have had the announcer from last year. He brought a sense of class and etiquette that made the LEGION's performance speak for itself. I can't stand GHETTO arse announcers that feel that they have to do all of that to hype a crowd.

  • You're not alone! Ever, including former 'Legion' members (such as myself) feel the same about the announcer. He's truly a pain to listen to. I don't understand why he feels the need to talk over the band. Mr. Jim Staton was the "Voice of the Legion" for many years and did add to the class of our band. We prided ourselves on being one of the Classiest HBCU bands around. No one could ever mimic Staton's voice, but they should find someone who can articulate and replicate such class.

  • What I love SO much about this band is their precision!! I wonder what the name of the song is that they drilled to. Does anyone know?

  • It is titled Carry On.

  • who is it made by?

  • THE WORST ANNOUNCER EVER!!! lol THE BEST BAND SINCE GOD CREATED EM lol

  • What I love about the Legion is there uniqueness in style! Including that great sound, great color guard, great M&M, and that great drumline! (not marching upright tenors) Way to go!

  • Good sound norfolk, I've always enjoyed your sound...does anyone remember that battle in 2001 with MBC..Wow it was good ...enjoyed it !

  • I remember that battle i want to say that was my 2nd time seeing The Legions but yes it was a Powerful Battle MoB(Morris Brown)was and still is one of my favor school when it comes to bands(FAMU being the other and my number 1)i went to Redan High school in Stone Mountain(wans't in band but know alot about bands from growing up in the shout and following HBCUs)and Mr.Moore Band Dicretor at Redan said that was the 1st time he seen a band Match MBC Power and be clean at the same time

  • First and Foremost, Great sound and excellent drill. However, I concur with other past members. Its time to update the drills and some of the music. Second, someone please KILL or Replace this announcer Brother sucks the air out of the show! Please STFU!

    Overall Great performance!

  • I agree! I remember going with my uncle to NSU homecomings year in and year out. There was this smooth sounding brother who announced for the band, who did an outstanding job. I wonder whatever happened to him??

  • That's a good question Tdogg. "The Voice" Mr. Jim Staten was the announcer last year(2007) at this event. He can be heard on the YT videos from last year. I cant answer what happen this year. Maybe he was unavailable.

He he the creator of the Bands mistress, STELLA! He needs to bring her back, she is HIGHLY missed.

  • Dang this band sounds good

  • yea ui thought what NCCu did was different and creative, they couldve just made it alot better and more entertaining.ima just put it out there... that was WACK

  • I agree, time for new drills. Sounds good though

  • Nice show, but its time for new songs for the opening drills. I performed those in my legion days....Getting tired........

  • They have a couple new ones a year. People just dont want to record those. Why? I dont know. But I do know the ones from your day cant be messed with so why not use them for a SHOWCASE?

  • After 8 years, it's all too predictable...lol But hey, it is what it is.

  • Thats the thing though, we have been lookin at the legion for 8 years but most have just started to watch us. The majority of the crowd in that clip had never seen that drill in person OR on film. But i agree, they need to showcase some of the new ones.

  • Are you selling this footage? You always have some quality stuff.

  • Looking good NSU

  • they just look soooooo nice moe!!!! the best band in the world because of their style and humble swagger................... they have the best squad and concept of class. they are equally funky and crazy hot. they will bre on top yesterday, today, tomorrow, and for ever............

  • They really need a better commentator. Where is the old one? He was so much better. I think NSU could do well in any competition outside of the an HBCU. Great sound, formations and drills. They don't do a whole lot of booty shaking, but they do the job. What was up with NCCU this year????? They have gone NEw AGE on me. I see what they are trying to do but they have to perfect the concept.

  • Love it!!

  • Thanks Commentator A lot for destroying the quality of the Beautiful music that was not hurt throughout the whole show... Someone said that.

  • Im sick of the same stuff from them like that entire entrance/drill. They need to do better than that. It gets old esp. if they do it back to back like they have been doing it.

  • Unlike some groups The Legion doesn't change their show for Honda. Even last year th show was one they had been doing ALL year with the exception of the concert tune, which IMHO they could have left out..LOL

  • this is tradition things wont change just cuz someone doesnt like it

  • Man ever since NSU joined the MEAC and I first saw the band in 2003, they've quickly become one of my favorites. Their mix of corp-style and show-style gives them the identity that no other band can match. And just like last year, they did a great job...

...but they still ain't better than the Hundred....lolol :-P

  • LOL Ya just HAD to get that in there, huh? LOL

Thanks for the props! ; )

  • Ya just HAD to throw that in there, huh? LOL

  • Thanks for the quality footage.
