You don't have to put your fingers in your ears, I don't think saying its Sunnah is correct either; It is Musthab. There are 5 Musthabs when giving Adhan and one of them is covering your ears, this helps the Muaddthin concentrate and give a loud Adhan; As mentioned in this Hadith:Nabi (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) told Bilaal (Radhiallaahu Anhu), 'Place your fingers in your ears for verily it raises the voice more. '
