@filipinosaregay they look nothing alike, if you wasn't to see the original and possibly the greatest technician with ko power using the philly shell style then look at footage on george benton.
At age 37,Sugar Ray was 142-5.Is there any other boxer who's had that record at that age?People talk about Pacquaio,Mayweather,Roy Jones and Hopkins being amazing(and they are),but they all stand in Robinson's shadow nontheless. Most of his overall losses came after the age of 39.As most boxers do,he went on way too long.
Im actually related to Gene. He is my great uncle. Ive never had the chance to meet him. I live all the way in Pennsylvania and have never had the chance to meet pretty much my dads whole side of the family which mostly resides in Utah. Its weird looking at Gene in these films he looks alot like my dad. Kinda freaky!
I grew up watching Robinson near the end of his career. Nobody today knows how good he was during his prime because he had a 93 bout winning streak that there are NO films of. At one time his records was 124-1. Nobody even scored a knockdown against Robinson until like his 157th fight. The one time he got TKO'd was for the light heavyweight title and he passed out from the heat. His one weakness was that he was a windmill style puncher alot of times and he would get beat by straight punchers.
He'd just hit them first and duck, slip or roll with their counters. He didn't swing all his weight behind punches because it's better to hit guys two or three times than miss with a wild swing. He was ACCURATE. I think all that stuff was taught to him by Robinson.
I believe Ali was greater than Robinson because of that. Nobody had a right hand like Ali. He'd hit you with that as much or more often than the left. He didn't even try to outpunch the heavy hitters he faced.
He kept his shoulders 90 degrees from the fighter in front of him so one hand was as close to his opponent as the other and he probably threw more right leads than jabs.
However, when he was young, he was so fast it didn't make a difference. Later in his career though, he got outboxed twice by Paul Pender of Boston, who would get his punches off before Robinson and tie him up so he couldn't counter. At one point, he was helping Muhammad Ali train. Before that, Ali copied Robinson alot, but after he worked out with Robinson all the sudden he was a much straigher puncher; especially with the right hand. I think Robinson taught him that.
The same punch delivered the same way by Muhammad Ali sent oscar Bonavena packing in rd 15 of their fight. How does anyone think Sugar Ray as a knockout puncher and middleweight compare with Julian jackson?...Strickly as a PUNCHER now...not other skills cuz there IS no comparison there...but strickly as a puncher and knockout artist who was a harder hitter Sugar Ray or J.J.? I would go with Julian Jackson
@sonwamac yea, only ali actually bounced back a little more, got his whole weight into the shot but didn't extend as much as ray, his was a little shorter and therefore didn't have quite the same impact, especially given his longer reach.
I would have loved to see Calzaghe make a fool out of Pavlik... He's an overrated boxer and wouldn't stand a chance against any of the previous great boxers of his weight.
@TRIPLESIXSICCNESS I haven't read the original comment that you were replying to, but two years down the line, i'll bet people feel pretty damn stupid saying pavlik's name in the same sentence as robinson's....
I would consider you stop consumming illegal contraband or better yet never post on any boxing related post unless you have something intelligible to say regarding this subject matter at hand.

I know boxing. Am a boxer myself so i know my stuff. Robinson was good, but Pav is too big and too much. He'd land the right and it would be goodnight Sugar Ray
Robinson: The ghost with a hammer in his hand. Oops, that was Henry Armstrong, but maybe Sugar loaned it to him. Skinny guy with scary power. Best timing EVER i the history of boxing. and timing is everything. Robby had it

Jackson was the bigger puncher although Robinson hit terribly hard for a welterweight and even delivered a few one punch knockouts at middleweight.

@sonwamac For sheer naked power. Jackson. Other than that there's no comparison, as you say.

Jimmy Wilde was the ghost with a hammer in his hand as far as I know Armstrong was nicknamed Homicide Hank.

I thinnk yuou are partly right... if memory is right, Armstrong was the ghost. However, that could definitely be applied to Sugar Ray
