@MixerVM Which usually come with zero warranty. I don't do that for customer equipment, because I stand behind my repairs. I've been burned by that a couple of times, when an eBay component died after being in the machine for a week or two, and I'm out the price for another one. I don't do that anymore, for that reason. If I'm going to fix something, I'm going to do it properly.
Is Dell still proprietary? I bought a studio slim 540s last year and I want to put everything in a new case and upgrade my PSU to 400w-500w and maybe buy a GTX 460 card for medium gaming. It has a intel quad core 8300, 6gb DDR2 ram, 7200rpm WD HDD. The mobo chipset is 0M017G A00 P45/P43. The PSU is only about 300w, not enough. Any recommendations on case/PSU?
I'm in agreement with sismofytter... you make rediculous statements about huge manufacturors because they don't build PC's the way "you" want them to? I think Dell and HP know how to run a PC company MUCH better than you do. These PC's have their place and are convienient for average family users. Funny how you can fix the PC for yourself but not for your customer and you obtain their PC for free... Hmmmmm
@BikerBry I ignored this ignorant comment for a year, but some points need to be responded to:
I don't put unknown condition used parts in customer machines, as I have to warrant them. I was burned by eBay parts that died a week after install once, and never again.
The customer is one of my biggest business customers, who was upgrading shortly anyway, so they weren't interested in fixing a 6-7 year old machine. That's why they gave it to me.
@cbiltcliffe - You should have left it ignored. "Ignorant?" What exactly about my statement is ignorant? Used parts? I never said anything about used parts. Go back and listen to your videos sometime. It's just you bitching about something you seem to know VERY little about. If you can build a better machine and make money doing it like HP or Dell... More power too you. Until then, stop your stupid ranting about non-standard hardware. They were the ones getting rich... not you.
So you are wondering why companies want to earn money? This video is just waste of space and time. The PSU power (W) you are wondering about is explained by newer hardware use less power than old hardware if we are talking about normal desktop office machines
i got one of those oddball dell PSU's recently and made it into a benchtop fan and ect testing unit marked all over it do not use in ANY computer death for certain cut off that hacked up version of a 20/24 pin connector and put a switch on it
I recently found two of these small form Dell's P4s @2.4 and 2,8. one had been vandalized with wires cut to PSU and drives (the other was complete and intact. After washing it I put the small MB in a dell 8250 case. All connectors work and the psu for any full sized dell P4 will mate. The mb is smaller and you'll only have AGP and 2 pci slots but it is a drop-in. The last P-3 (black clam shell) cases should also work.A big advantage is that you can then use full size drives.
Did you think of trying to find one used online? Maybe Ebay? Just a thought as you can get a PSU for these for $20-$25 any day of the week. No reason to buy a new PSU for it when its as old as it is.
If you just go to ebay, you could find a replacement

Can you imagine if Dell had non-standard USB? The +5V and -5V would be reversed, making it "better".
DoctorStalker1 1 month ago
@DoctorStalker1 Either that, or they'd run it on 12V, rather than 5. Let all the magic smoke out, and it doesn't work.
And Dell would probably spin it as their computers are "too powerful" for standard USB components.

@cbiltcliffe Even 12 volts doesn't seem enough when there is easy access to AC.
Dell: Extreme Powerful

I hate this shit. So many good computers go to waste because their proprietary crap prevents you from fixing them.

Dell obviously saw they could be greedy and make more money by using non standard wiring.
