hy! could you give any advice, how to do the same thing with this fcpx stuff? it doesn't have the color correction 3 way effect nor has it any kind of video filter as far as i have seen. also i could provide good quality glitch hop music from the producer, with all rights to use it if you are interested!
If I filmed at 960p at 48fps, and slowed it down to 23.98, what percent do I increase it by to get back to full speed? at 30fps? at 60fps? I have not learned this conversion yet. Thank you! and super helpful video!
Dude thanks so much! ive been looking around for a good color correction video for my gopro. Do you recommend Final Cut? i have a mac and i might get it.
@jackwhitVT First: to be honest I dont color correct a lot but I have been doing this kinda thing for a # of yrs now. The best time to add the reds and yellows is after you make sure that your luma is all set. you dont wanna be all blown out then start throwin color in. In FCP X they do have CC3-way. Select your clip, co to upper fight quad of screen, click "balance color". then highlight all the other clips u wnt corrected and click "color match". that will get everything •••TBC•••
@jackwhitVT ••Continuation•• looking the same (note: Balance is not perfect, nor is color match but it will get u started.) Once all that is set u can click on "color correction" and a CC3-way should pop up. (if im wrong about that sorry Im just going from memory right now.) If it does pop up then like Abe told you correct all the clips all the way through. once that is done you can (if you want) highlight all those clips (provided they arent broken up by other footage) and "right click" *TBC*
@jackwhitVT ••Continuation part 2•• then select "make new compound clip" (this will have the same effect as starting a new sequence and dragging in the first sequence like Abe and I have to do) from there you can apply an effect/vignette/etc. I hope this helped but i now realize you have prolly looked up a "how-to" vid by now and i just wasted all that time haha. Also sorry, in my first part of the comment i meant to tell you to select clip, hit balance color, highlight other clips, ••TBC••
@jackwhitVT ••Continuation part3•• click color match, THEN select which clip you want to match them with. (REMEMBER Color match is not perfect it might give you a little bit of a funny hue but that is why we have color corrector.) Anyways I hope this helped a little bit. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Happy Editing.
When I open the wavelength graph mine is topping out at the white line and same with the black line. It just produces a big thick line where the graph should continue. Is there anyway to fix this? I noticed yours goes above your white line so I'm curious on how to fix it. I'm also running Final Cut Pro.
Great tutorial. Sadly, shooting with the GoPro in snow during full overhead sun is a big no-no—the highlights are so blown out they are not recoverable, even using ProRes. I'll have to use some filter film next time, or just ski as the sun is setting and there's some shadows in the snow.
@CndianShreder On the left hand side of the sequence in FCP if you see the drop down that says RT, switch that to Unlimited RT vs Safe RT, it should make it so you don't have to render everything if you are on a fast computer!
@jhurwitz16 i got it to download but i dont have photoshop so i cannot open it, any chance it can be formatted into jpeg or something else i would be able to open?
Yo abe, I fond the waveform in premiere..But its kinda different..Does it list blac and white...Would it be luminance, 1-100 ? Also I got the color wheel up but its' has 100x more options compared to final cuts and doesnt have a slider under each wheel...Any idea which settings I need to manipulate and if I'm using the correct waveform? Thanks man
Great video but i use magic bullet looks 1.2 in sony vegas and i was wondering if you know if sony vegas or magic bullet has a wave graph like you use.

@ricekillah yeah, it will really make your vids vibrant. Technically for color correction it's not ideal (colors and contrast more stretched out of the gate), but I do much less coloring now than I used to with the new stuff. Most of the time just do a quick desaturation and some level adjustments and call it good for sunny stuff
In addition to my cmmt below, i got two quick questions!
1. I understand you wanna keep the whites & blacks in broadcast tv safe, but how do you decide on where the mids go.. just personal eye preference?
2. You kind of touched on it, but how did you decide on which direction the hues should be nudged on the whites, blacks, and mids, just another personal eye pref? Thanks again man!
@orangatim Yep those are mostly by eye and what not. You can use the vector scope for color saturation, but hues are really up to you! That's where you can get creative!
I can't believe you're giving out your vignettes man..thank you so much. Definitely the most inspiring editor on youtube. Even if the numbers/comments aren't showing it, so many people are digging on your tutorials!
@connormcfaRland The same concepts apply to premiere pro! There is a waveform monitor there as well and a similar color corrector. I don't have a PC, but try not to look at the specifics and just take some general ideas back with you!
Please, keep rolling these videos out. I love them. Tutorials really help me get inspired to put the effort forward to actually edit a video. I usually get bored and uninspired after a few minutes.
Ever consider saving a bunch of shots til the end of the season and trying to put together a full length film? I believe it would be the first to be done with gopros. The LCD screen is out, so there's no reason to destroy a camera trying to get a monitor to work, and most audio for movies is done separate from the camera, so it could work! haha
I have an idea for an effect you can put in your next edit:
What if you took a video of yourself grinding two different rails that are next to each other, with a camera mounted on a tripod in the same shot. Cut the videos into two separate clips. Put them on top of eachother in the Final Cut timeline, and apply a matte over half of the top clip. This will make it look like there are two of you (or Chris Farro, ect.) grinding the rail in the same shot. Kind of like layer masking in PS?
Abe, are you getting paid for the ski edits, or some sort of compensation? It seems like so much work is put into them to be just for fun. It's honestly Level1 or Poor Boyz quality if they were only longer.
@Reijerkolle If you are good at something and enjoy doing it, why would you need money to motivate you? Sure it would be nice to get paid, but it can also just be a hobby that you do because you love doing it and maybe it will make someone else out there smile when they see it...
@volcomboy144 Did i say anything about motivation? nope. Just saying if bill gates had made microsoft for free, we probably wouldnt be on youtube right now.
@Eureka3d Color is definitely a powerful tool - I suppose I'm partial to staying inside Final Cut and keeping things quick and contained. That and I've never been a fan of Color's UI
