I LOVE THIS MOVIE!! I remember seeing it 3X back I think in 1982!! It was a sleeper HIT and I love the movie. Soooooo cool man...............! Richard Gere was awesome in this 1980's flick!! This movie helped launch a wild decade of fun and debauchery..............! Let's reinvent the myths of the ages and do it all over again!
Richard Gere was the biggest male sex symbol of his time. He has always been hot. I think his 1st film in a supporting role was "Looking For Mr GoodBar" with Diane Keaton. He became a household name when he starred in "American Gigolo".
Damn!!!!!!! I was 14yrs old when I saw this movie in 1983!!! I always wished I would find a man that looked like him, but not yet and now I'm 42 yrs old. Is there still hope?
Yup! Especially the sex scenes where Jesse is on top of Monica buck naked boning each other & the shower scene where Kaprisky is shown in full frontal nudity showing us her lucious tits & bush.
This film flopped because the public has no imagination. They have no concept of ROMANCE!!!!!!!!!! Love on the run, passion...I can't see where this one went wrong. I love it.
Isn't that the truth? This movie never ceases to thrill me, and it should have gone on to be a big hit. Perhaps people like us can reintroduce this movie to the world by letting others know about it.
@Lyubov91 not a good idea.Than they make another remake.with higher paid actors take away the nudety :( and change the plot and probable have will smith play richard geres part
Are you crazy? Why do you think they'd put Will Smith in Richard Gere's role? Because Will Smith does a new movie everytime we turn around? I don't see how that's possible. I think they'd choose someone sexier (though I can't think of someone offhand), and even if the nudity were taken away (maybe, maybe not), the movie will still have its merits.
@Lyubov91 cause that would make the movie politically corect.Keep in mind that i'm legend is orginal a white movie.they just had will smith in the remake (so it could be politically corect)
Hey, I have no problems with political correctness. I just think Will Smith isn't all that sexy. I'm sure there are lots of sexy male actors of all colors who could play the role, but I don't watch too many movies or keep up with what goes on in Hollywood, so I can't offer any suggestions. :(
I was just thinking if I were a director I'd love to remake this movie. It could be updated and make his hero Prince or Han Solo or something more modern, but some one with depth, maybe a poet. I don't know who could be better than Gere or sexier. Maybe Penelope Cruz as Monica? Who knows?
You and I think alike because I'd love to see another remake of BREATHLESS. Yes, I can see Penelope Cruz as Monica, but I can't see anyone other than Richard Gere as Jesse. :)
Are you kidding?? This version IS a remake!! The original is by Godard (1960) and is a thousand times better. Stop with the goddamn remakes already and let filmmakers make new films.
been doing it like that since 83, just came here to show my g/f where i got my style, she asked where I learned to kiss the way i do, told her RG showed me at 16. haha! lol! love ya Jesse! RJJ!
all time fave gere film....total classic.....love this scene.....and the ending is amazing.....sad....but amazing....can anyone tell me what is said after ''adios amigo'' ?
I think that's when Berutti (the guy in the car) says, "Are you wacked out of your skull?" This is because Jesse (Gere) gave the gun, his only form of defense, back to him.
..que buena interpretacion conjugada por la musica nos demuestra el grado máximo de deseo que un hombre puede sentir por una mujer...al momento de besarla estalla la cúspide instrumental de este hermoso tema....los instrumentos al unísono
I'd like to know the same thing. After starring in a movie with Richard Gere, she should have shot to fame, but instead, she faded into obscurity. How sad.
I agree with you. I think BREATHLESS flopped b/c the world wasn't ready for it back in 1983, but if it were released today, it would be a huge hit. I like it better than R&J, too. I think Valerie did APHRODITE before she did BREATHLESS. Again I have to say that it's a shame she didn't become a huge star. Look what playing Richard Gere's love interest in PRETTY WOMAN did for Julia Roberts.
true, valerie is also much more pretty than julia.but i think julia had more movies under her belt+shes younger.

She appeared in soft-core exploitation but made a legit American debut in Breathless (1983) frolicing with Richard Gere. The film was universally panned and she returned to filming in her native France.
and she did aphrodite first like you said.but a killer body that she had.
It's still so unfair that Valerie didn't go on to fame as Julia did. Valerie was only 20 or so when she did BREATHLESS, according to imdb, and if life were fair, she would have become a huge star for that. Oh yes, I know that Kaprisky is her mother's maiden name. :)
well B is just a remake of a french movie from the 60s with a twist(i've heard.not seen the orginal, but heard jessie died in both versions, but on screening the audience didn't like that gere died so they froze it) I think french movies are weird, with a few exceptions

I sadly remember seeing this movie 20 plus years ago. What a pathetic attempt to have pointlessly re-made the great French, Goddard movie from the l960's. Despite his attempts at "acting", Gere is practically a-sexual. If you like Gere's looks and are open minded, rent the gay/bisexual movies of porn icon Johnny Hazzard. This young man burns up the celluoid, No matter your sexual desires and preferences, Hazzard performs. Often, performance in films is better than the craft of acting.
Thank u so much 4 this video, I've always wanted 2 find this song again from this movie. I had a failed attempt a while ago 4 the song in this movie then the other day I thought I'd try again n used the keywords "breathless pool scene" n finally got it. For years I've waned 2 learn this song on the piano. Cheers.
It's a great piece. Reminds me of Eric Satie. I actually worked it out myself several years ago (when I had a piano), it's not that difficult, took me a day or two. Well worth it. Glad you liked the clip.
You are gr8, got the info of the song / name details fiinally, was lookingg for ages. Fan or Gere...i have used his brethless techniques out there in the market :d , lol.
Glad I could help, and sorry for the typo on the name. I was thinking of Richard Gere when I wrote that comment and how smokin' hot he was back in the day. Glad to hear you've put the Breathless techniques to work! :D
Roger Ebert wrote that the Breathless producers wanted Nastassia Kinski to play opposite Richard Gere & it would have made it a better film. I agree...Valerie was pretty to look at, but a terrible actress.
Although I can understand the rationale for casting Nastassia in that role, I think she would have played the character too strong, too smart for it. Perhaps Valerie Kaprisky isn't a very good actress, but I think she was perfect in the role. If I had to pick someone else for it, I think I'd have suggested Mariel Hemingway. (If you haven't seen Star-80, you should. Eric Roberts greatest performance.)
I still think Eric Roberts is the talented one (& the good looking one!) in the Roberts family (seems Julia got the all the breaks while Eric suffered a drug problem for years)
Thanks so much for posting this clip...is there any way you could post more of this Richard Gere Breathless remake?
Oh yes, Star 80 is compelling & disturbing & it is shocking Eric Roberts was snubbed even an Oscar nomination..perhaps the material was so dark (it was released in late 1983)& maybe Bob Fosse made the Paul Snider character a little too sympathetic that it turned off Academy voters? It's the only reason I can think why Eric was ignored.
I rented it from a local video store and just grabbed those two clips because people had asked for them. I think it's also available from Netflix. I didn't think the Paul Snider character was all that sympathetic, scary/creepy was more my take. I do agree that he's the one with the talent in that family. For something a little lighter, you might check out the clip I added from 'Cold Feet'. That's a great little film if you haven't seen it.
Eric Roberts was terrifying in Star 80, but Fosse was criticized for making the audience feel something for the bum; Snider was a low grade pimp with stars in his eyes & so desperate for fame it was pathetic. The scenes of him trying so hard at the Playboy mansion are cringe worthy...
Robert Johnson, CEO of RJR Nabisco said: "People worship success, but they root for failure." Fosse puts us in that space with Snider, and it's a little uncomfortable. If you haven't seen Fargo, checkout a similar character played by William H. Macy...so desperate and pathetic it's scary. Both Roberts and Macy were so convincing in those roles, I wonder how they found the courage to go there.
