  • inspirational. you kids should check out Roy Buchanan, he did some revolutionary things with his guitar. rock on good people.

  • I still have people call me gay for listening to John. They just picture some dude playing an acoustic singing bullshit to girls. I just had to say it to get my point across. I was like " no dude, you don't understand. He's like Jimi Hendrix. The best guitar player alive, definitely one of them as far as I am concerned." and I was like wow he really is when I saw this. That is also why I just dropped over 1000 on the John Mayer signature strat. And I hold Jimi in the highest regards."

  • Man he does a goooooooood Jimi!

  • he's played with jimmie vaughan??? i would die if i met him, he looks so much like stevie.

  • @ixlikexscurvy John played with Double Trouble some years back, in the spot formally occupied by his idol, SRV. He described it as "surreal." It's on YouTube, check it out. Search JM and DT.

  • i really really REALLY need to learn these licks.... john mayer just has that fucking feel... wow

  • hummmmmm, novelty... JM style always was based on best guitar players of the blues.

  • Bless, he hits that Albert King part, spot on.

  • @Claymation99 Ya i know.

  • You guys have to listen @0.44

    JAZZER!!

  • JUST AMAZING!!!...I dont know what to say... I like it so!

  • Thanks for this amazing video man! John Mayer is certainly an amazing artist because he got such a huge musical culture! that's a part of what make a great artist!

  • Every guitar player naturally is gonna rip off licks or techniques from their favourite guitar player especially in jazz or blues music because thats really were improvisation skill and technique shows off. From there people further develope and create their own style - thats what makes guitar playing so much more then notes and really about the soul :) I myself tend to "copy" Slash Jimi Paige Joe Walsh and of course SRV

  • John Mayer he's the guy that will still keep on playing blues when the generation before him dies you know B.B. King and Eric Clapton and the others, and that's good we have such a good bluesplayer like John Mayer who can give the music to all new guitar players. So thats good!

  • I always thought he was a great hendrix/srv player, along with his acoustic guitar skills. He does a great job but he does rip off all these guys. I still think hes fuckin great and just for being humble enough to tell us where he got his chops from, thats a man thing. Thumbs up

  • best part is he combines all these great players and he has his own sound, amazing!

  • I enjoy just a few of his songs, but I can watch him play live for centuries. His talent is one in a billion... or in a lot of millions if you prefer.

  • Damn, , , I love John, just showing his chops for us yet again right here. So tight. Not even just him, those drums and bass. So much in the pocket. <3

  • lol at 0:20 he looks like johnny depp

  • this is one of those little jams he does before "city love" during is heavier things era. at least im fairly positive

  • "check this out" and then he rips into it. JM yes!

  • Thanks for posting the video Donna I really enjoyed it! It definitely from 2004 you can tell by the guitar playing. I'm an avid Mayer fan and this sounds like a portion of his machine gun jams he did a lot of back in 04. His playing has transformed a bit more since this time.

  • The picture of Eric Clapton looks like Dr. House

  • First couple of sentences, PERFECT. Not to sure he should call it ripping off though. But great vid though.

  • hahaha LOVE the Albert King bit

  • "Muscial Bibliography" starts at 2:33

  • Glad to see a fan backing a musician who deserves some good publicity. John Mayer is a phenomenal blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. I think people just give him a bad rap cause of the tabloid shit. I've met a few famous musicians, and they are just like you and me. John just wants to play his guitar. This video showcases that. John and his guitar

  • So my wife was going to bed and i'm watching this video..listening to JM make love to his guitar..she comes to give me a kiss goodnight and asks why im sweating..I said man..listening to this guy play makes me hot..nothing homosexual(no offense) intended..but wow.

  • Indeed he is the greatest guitarst who ever lived. Hendrix and Clapton get credit for being innovative in 1967, but just judging pure guitar ability, Mayer has passed them.

  • @SkirtSoPlain There's a reason Clapton called John "Slowhand Jr." many years ago. JM is definitely the best guitarist I've ever seen live. And I've seen lots of them. JM is just the total package. Can't wait for his next album to see what he's gonna hit us with this time. Whatever it is, it'll be great.

  • @SkirtSoPlain SO TRUE!

  • And albert collins?

  • the only impersonation i see is john mayer impersonating jonny depp at 2:50..... yup... john mayer can not only imitate like 3 million musicians but now jonny depp :O .... WHAT NEXT!?!?!?!?!!!????!?!?!?! ROCK ON JOHN MAYER!

  • Jm is a huge inspiration to my playing, I find it funny that I started on Hendrix, moved on to SRV, and found John Mayer. The progression continues. His radio stuff is okay, but this man truly knows how to make love to a guitar and I've learned a lot from him. It's hard to be a white boy who knows how to play and feel the blues.

  • Best guitar player alive... there will always be haters... SRV, Hendrix, BB King, Buddy Guy, Clapton and yes, John Mayer are all on the same level. Personally, I think JM has more of a connection with his audience and the media loves to make people evil since it makes for better ratings/reading/circulation. He's a rock star, and acts like one. But he also has sold millions of records, love him or hate him, you have to respect his talent and success.

  • The Albert King impression is just fantastic @ 4:05.

  • hey where can i find the entire set? where can i download the entire performance? I've looked online but cant find it. i know he allows live recordings and allows people to download them but i cant find it

  • @ohyescesc Sorry, I have no clue where to find the whole thing. See the video's description for the show it's from, that might help your search.

  • @ohyescesc Search "rock me baby Buddy Guy Jimmy Vaughn" its here.

There you go mate. Although Mayer doesn't play. Crossroads '04. And Buddy Guy is pretty fucking dope in that video.

  • is there any doubt in the minds of the m-fers that john mayer is the best guitar player that ever existed?

  • I used to hate JM. This vid made me changed my mind. The man can play blues and knows about blues. The hendrix, albert king and srv parts are fantastic.

  • speaking of albert king... one suggestion for you girl... listen crosscut saw... great tune. if you like blues, that song has been copied by clapton, srv, hendrix, etc...

  • i´m not hisbiggest fan... but... to make this u have to know a lot of music, licks and the roots of the blues. that´s undeniable. the only thing i critizice... his clean tone always is admired like the best.... but i would like to hear him play without his dumble amp. like dereck trucks.

  • its 3:00 am nov. 2011 and now i finally got super respect for john mayer. damn dude didnt know he could do this

  • Hm, I think I'm gonna learn and steal all the licks in this video :D :D :D

  • THAT'S THE FUCKIN POINT! lmao love it!

  • I think every musician do it, I mean, when u decide u want to become a musician is cus someone inspire you, and you want to play like him. Later on you create your own style.

  • Awesome Donna! He, along with my other guitar heroes, is by far, MY favorite music.

    Thanks for posting!!!

  • John "Fucking" Mayer !

  • I love John Mayer...i can't believe so many people hate on him, he's an unreal musician. Fucking amazing at guitar, especially in the John Mayer Trio where he shows more of his blues roots. This is unreal too haha thanks for posting.

  • amazing!!! i fu$%^ love him!!!!

  • THATS THE FUCKING POINT :) haha

  • This was incredible. JM is a fantastic musician and is truly my inspiration for guitar :)

  • THAT was awesome.

  • Does anyone have like the actual performance on video?..

  • @HeemNHuggie Unfortunately, I don't think so.

  • @HeemNHuggie it's in Eric Clapton's Cross Road, in Texas, the first one, I believe in 2008.

  • John Mayer is GOD

  • John Mayer is bad

  • I got my style of playing by covering songs first, finding things I liked.. turned them around and made them my own. I didnt invent those sounds.. I didnt invent playing guitar... so therefore.. im going to have to learn from someone or some song i like.

  • damn sweet, that was perfect imitation! I'm impressed!

  • this is excelent thanks for the upload

  • mayers fuckin BOSS, great guitarist. jimi would be proud..

  • That was highly cool and interesting. Thanks for sharing.

  • Oh man that vibeeeee.

  • ALL HAIL THE PENTATONIC SCALE!!!

  • @guitarguy476 Does the fuckin' job. Well.

  • Albert King's part is soo damn awesome!!

  • Great Vid!! Really Enjoyed it...the break down really means a lot to guitar players as well :) Thanks !!

  • great vid!!!!!

  • pure awesomeness over guitar,JM.

  • pure awesomeness over guitar,JM.

  • yes mayer steals licks from all the greats, but thats all part of the game. The thing to keep in mind is that mayer is now part of that subculture of blues guitarists whose licks are now being used by other guitar players. I know because I've stolen some of his, and he does have his own unique style that brings forth a poppy, funky, bluesy sound and is somewhat representative of the world we live in today.

  • Good sweet lord above. That was.......... AWESOME!

  • Message to all the haters who insist on private messaging me: I am an adult woman, not a kid, and I am NOT intimidated by your online bullying. The messages that you are sending me are EXACTLY the reason why I screen comments on this video. As for the individual who claims that my screening is "anti-art" ~ well, that is the most ridiculous message I've received to date. Haters' comments are NOT art. They are like gang tags scrawled across a priceless Van Gogh painting. Sorry, not on MY page.

  • @DonnaFirsty Thanks for this! Dope how John gave credit to all his influences. As a guitar player myself, I would've done the same!

  • @DonnaFirsty Well said my dear! Fricken Youtube-Nazis and their Youtube Holocaust!

  • @DonnaFirsty i respect that to the fullest extent

  • This is talent. The recording and vid is on par with the guitar, superb!

  • What key?

  • I was at that performance. But I thought he also threw his own style in at the end.

  • @nickwho622 Really! So did I have the video's origin right? Was it July 18th, 2004 at the Coors Amphitheater in San Diego, CA? I think that's right but it would be great to have confirmation from someone who was there!! :D

  • you gotta love it its where it came from its where its at and its up to us where it goes immitation is the greatest form of flattery.

  • what key is he in?

  • where i can find video from 6:00?

  • @143UAC I'm not sure where that pic came from. Check out the Crossroads recordings, perhaps.

  • @143UAC I am sure that picture at 6:00 was taken while same live show like video "Rock Me Baby-BB King/Eric Clapton/Buddy Guy/Jim Vaughn"..

  • He doesn't needs to rip off no one! Hes an amazing musician period!!

  • This man is UNTOUCHABLE.

But boy do I wanna touch him..

  • I love this!

just listening is improving my blues ^^

  • its got to be in the key of d minor

  • This surely is a great and helpful video. It gives you an in depth view on how the greats do their licks. This is a good video to study! thank you for posting it.

  • @andrew1schaeffer Yes this is a very cool video, but not all guitar players rip off their licks from other players. Of course you may hear subtleties of the influences from their favorite players sneaking out through their own original playing, but John Mayer, in particular borrows very heavily from Hendrix's "lead within chords" technique which heavily influenced SRV. Speaking as a guitar player and SRV fan, SRV in your playing is not bad!

    watch?v=XTgpcl5LsN4

  • Such an awesome video!! Is there actually a video recording of this? - that would totally rock... THUMBS UP BIG TIME!

  • Awesome video, thanks for posting!

  • This goes to show, whoever tries to put John against a wall when it comes to guitarplaying will be put down, hard! :)

  • Cool video bro.

  • very good!!

  • GOD DAMN that was amazing!

  • awesome

  • I hope John's voice gets better and the new album drops. I can't wait to see him in concert again. I was lucky enough to get 8th row center stage tickets on the Battle Studies tour and it was so awesome. Great video!

  • he has done his hw. JM is amazingly talented. critics bag on him today but in the near future he'll be considered great when another guitarists shows up similar to him and people start comparing them to each other

  • i like the part where you say 'I am one of those people who will ALWAYS have John Mayer's back, no matter what ...' and im one of those people too! haha and of course theres nothing to say about this show/video. phenomenal.

  • Great job putting this video together thumbs up all the way!!!

  • does anybody know , what the song is calles, which john sings in 4:20 ...

i like it so much ... it's so awesome ... please help !! thanks

  • @voodoojam97 It's born under a bad sign albert king

  • @McKeee0326 Thanks for answering!

  • love it

  • Every awsome guitar player will say they ripped off other peoples licks. Its common and there is nothing wrong with it. John Frusciante has admitted to it as well along with others.

  • Johnny Depp anyone? 0:21

  • shit gets real at 1:13

  • This was fantastic! Thanks for posting, bro.

  • @Stringprodigy LOL read the comment, I guess you mean sis'

  • damn he's good.

  • That Jimi Hendrix lick stopped my heart. I need to know where else its from. Everthing about it. I NEED IT.

  • @Cristerlokoz I think some of it is from red house and some from castles made of sand by hendrix

  • @Cristerlokoz first place that comes to mind in the intro to red house at woodstock.. also msg of love.... i think..

  • FUCKKKKKKK! BEST TONE EVER!

  • the crazy think about this is, he can do them all!

  • dam hes too good,fk!! n his guitar tone is so awesome!

  • Novel, enjoyable, and tasty. Goes well with the first cup of morning tea.

  • Thanks Firsty!

  • This video is awesome man

  • OMFG is it just me or does he look insanely like johnny depp @ 0:13 lmao i love JM

  • @Jjjj187 actually I think it's city love. It's in drop D. Normally when he does machine gun he does it in E, and he'll throw in some voodoo chile

  • @locoken True that! The fact of the matter is that if he really was nothing more than a copycat,he wouldn't be getting the respect or the gigs that he gets. When was the last time any of these haters got to jam with BB KIng? How bout perform at the funeral of a KING?(MJ) And i'm pretty damn sure none of them had Eric Clapton declare, "I had no idea the kid was that good!"People talk shit because they can't do shit.If they could, theyd be able to rest in the security of their own accomplishments.

  • and thats the fuckin point!

  • Three words, Shmor-goss-board!

  • He just did guitar impressions!!!!!!

  • this is an AMAZING video, thanks for sharing dude !

  • And Hendrix how did i forget him haha.

  • Psshh before i even listen i can tell you SRV and B.B. King haha. Little Albert King too i think. But he changed stuff and has his own style enough. It's not like he's some kid in his basement playing the same solo over and over because he can't create one. But i mean in Berklee they teach you those licks. So he may play some of their licks but he has his own touch. Oh and Eric Clapton too of course hahaha.

  • @TheMollieSTFU I think that JM knew those licks way before he ever went to Berklee. ;P

  • @DonnaFirsty he sure did.. they dont learn you licks at any school.. damn.. :/

  • hi guys this is the intro he does to city love on crossroads

its so mean. john i wish i could jam with you one day, your my idol!!!

  • 0:13 johnny´s depp bro

  • :30 - I didn't know that john was in loverboy!

  • @locoken Yeah John and Keith are an amazing combo.

  • Basically if you want to get down to brass tacks blues is ripping every other blues guitarist out there off, it's what you do. You play and play with your soul so when you steal a lick it's not stealing it's borrowing it to fit the moment.

  • Can you please upload this full song? Why did you cut it off? Where did you find this???

  • @25Ragz sorry that's all I've got. A friend of mine sent it to me in an MP3.

  • @DonnaFirsty Oh ok.Thanks anyway.. this was awesome.

  • what is this song ?

  • @antony5linteau not really a "song," just John jamming a little.

  • @DonnaFirsty It's the intro jam to city love.He rarely jams in the begining of City Love but when he does this is what it is.Listen to the City Love from the crossroads music festival. He doesn't talk about the guitar tricks but it's the same exact jam.or if you search john mayer untitled jam/city love you'll find a version of this jam with video. Its amazing.

  • @25Ragz thats a mean intro aye. obviously you follow john mayer just as much as i do !

  • @25Ragz thanks for the info, I didn't know that

  • @antony5linteau technically he's jamming to machinegun by hendrix

  • @Jjjj187 Good to know, thanks!

  • Good stuff. nobody has ever not ripped anyone off

  • @stratkiller51 HA! True dat!

  • I love his influences :D who's the 3rd guy though? I don't think I know him

  • @Wolta Albert King? You need to google him! :)

  • he looks like Johnny Depp at the fifth picture

  • Haha your warning is genious!!

    Amen to that!!

  • John mayer is the new age blues player! He's just very versatile!

  • so educational

  • oh crap what was the last picture from?? what a show that would be

  • @BRD85 I think it was from one of the Crossroads events. Not really sure. I have so many pics in my collection, I start to forget where they came from. :P

  • amazing video thanks

  • John Mayer is simply amazing

  • @ProfessorWonder Sure they do! Mayer fans are musically very astute. :)

  • at 0:21 he looks like Johnny Deep

  • So sick..... thank god for music like this still being around

  • He says he rips those guys off but he "john mayered" the hell out those licks. Which is to say hes more original than you might think.

  • @jhoughtaling1 Hahaa I don't think he can NOT be John Mayer.

  • Awesome

  • @jonnyfender7 glad ya like it :)

  • This just shows why every guitarist needs to do their homework... He just incorporated the top blues legends in one improv session

  • that picture of him jamin' with bb king, jimmie vaughan, eric clapton and buddy guy is fake, right? ;) I've seen the jam like 100 times and john never sat on stage. anyways - awesome video! :D

  • @zeeLibertiner It's not fake, to my knowledge!

  • @zeeLibertiner John sits occasionally. If you look up John Mayer BB King Guitar center, you'll get a two part, nearly 20 minute video of them jamming some time last year. Anyways, awesome video!

  • @AcousticCover thanks for that tip, I will check the video out.

  • Is that shot of Jimi Hendrix one you took? Or did you find it on the internet... because I want it!
