  • My S52 swapped 325is makes this exact same noise and I've been trying to figure it out for months lol. Is anything damaged by driving the car like this?

  • My 330I has that annoying whistling. To test, I unplugged the connector on the back of the alternator and then started the engine, noise disappears! Plugged back in, noise comes back! So that implies something to do with the voltage regulator not the pulley? If it is the alternator pulley, it shouldn't matter if the connector is unplugged or not?

  • i have same problem. Let us know when you fix it. It sounds like the alternator.

  • This is exactly my problem!! Thanks for the video! my 525i has 198,000 miles and the sound is coming from the alternator area.

  • Its probably a loose hose or a small leak in the air intake or exhaust...

  • I have the same sound as well. Real annoying. No rattling though. Not sure what it could be.

  • I have the exact same whine...and was about to replace my alternator today because the sound changes pitch everytime I turn on an accessory.

Have you figured out what your noise is yet?

  • A: rattling= vanos.....definitely your vanos

B: whining....that whine sounds like a vacuum leak. check where erikeykey said. it looks like a T of hose, but vacum hose is inexpensive and can be found anywhere

  • Check the PCV valve under the intake manifold.

  • whining noise must have come due to worn water pump. we've had such issues here in Lithuania

  • i have the whining, but not the rattling.......

  • Man I have the exact same problem! Im having my mechanic look at it tomorrow, and i'll let u know what he thinks.

  • It would be much appreciated.

I am trying to get a new Tensioner but the stores keep getting the wrong one.

  • the rattling is in vanos. Try Beisan systems solution. I fix rattling in my e36 with it.

  • Yes I have the exact same problem with my BMW 316 (1.8) SE. I was convinced it was the alternator but could be wrong.

  • I infact have not gotten this ficed.

    Here's a little list.

    Replaced Alternator 2 times

    PS Pump

    Idler Pulley

Belt has 1K miles on it as of the video, I replaced belt with a brand new one, noise was still their.

Removed AC compressor belt and ran car, noise still their, so it's something with the Main belt or the accesories it runs.

  • I am actually just waiting for a good financial time and going to take it to BMW and have them try and find out what is causing the noise. Car drives great and gets great gas millage so its not causing any issues, it's just annoying when my friends can here me comming a mile away :(

  • I don't know if you ever got it fixed but it might be a belt.
