im happy u have had success with the walker, as so have i. The direct fit converters from walker have been good to me. but the weld in place units have given me problems.
This is just a note, I'm not trying to make an argument out of this. OBD II vehicles should usually have dealer or OEM certified aftermarket direct fit cat installed. Not doing so, could triggger a Check Engine lamp to illuminate. False readings to the post cat oxygen sensor can cause bad tail pipe emissions readings.
scotty which one is in my car? i have a cylindrical shaped metal can, and another one that looks like the one in the video, which is after the cylindrical can....
@niamey11 I live dangerously, and have done so for 44 years and still am in one place. But I use jack stands when I'm doing heavy duty jobs that take a lot of time.
@niamey11 i get under cars with jack that go down slowly by themselves and i dont even use flast surfaces sometimes they ris just three little wheels on the floor and the other on the air.
@scottykilmer but ya got to admit it is cheaper then a cat is. my truck didnet have one when i bogut it so i didnet have any thing to take off but the muffler then its strait pipe from the turbo back but it has a egr and a waste gate on it
There is an easier way to check if your cat is working correctly and it dosnt involve drilling into your exhaust. When the engine is completely warm, use a temp gun and take readings before and after the cat. the exhaust should always be hotter after the converter. If it is the same temp then the cat isnt burning the hydrocarbons. if it cools down after the cat then it is clogged.
The cat in my 90k Honda clogged cracking my head and causing much problem. They should have put a pressure relief valve ahead of the cat with a warning light.
@journeyquest1 No there shouldn't, that would rise the price on catalytic converters and parts are expensive as is. And a mechanic would charge like another hours worth of labor just to plug in that warning light.
Off topic but I was really close to getting my hands on the Mustang Bullit edition at one point too. I wish I had gotten it though, kickin myself in the ass for not doing it. Now I drive a van!
I noticed smell fuel fumes in he cab of the vehicle. Check engine light is not illuminated, the smell comes and goes mainly in warm temperature I notice it more and a odd noise under the car not loud but muffled noise.
Hey Scotty, if the pressure was 15 behind the cat, would that indicate a clogged muffler? My muffler has ballooned-up and looks like it's about ready to blow! The car starts, but dies after 10 seconds. (Engine code indicates a problem with the forward o2 sensor)...1995 Grand Cherokee 4.0.
Wow, I clicked on this thinking to myself another video on YouTube from a Yahoo that "thinks" he knows what he is talking about. Nice video, nice advise and you do it the same way I do. Saving your link to show some customers. (by the way been a tech for 26 years...this was refreshing)
Scotty. My blazer is rumbling like it's got a magnaflow exhaust. it doesn't. no major breaks I can see, when I went under it with a flash light and checked I did notice condensation dripping on either side of the muffler though. . Is that the muffler gone bad already?[it's only 2-3yrs old] Or is it maybe the Catalytic Converter gone bad?
Some people may think this guy is crazy. Being a fellow Mechanic myself, this is what happens when you work on cars for a living, you can't be normal. Or, maybe it's sniffing exhaust fumes on a daily basis that makes you that way. Who knows!
@tjw8T1 no, it's cause I work by myself, so I don't have to take anyone's B.S. and people tend not to like it cause they spend all day taking it from people they work with and are jealous of me. Scotty
@scottykilmer I never meant that as an insult, just a joke.
I think your videos are great, and I appreciate the fact that you are educating people on how to fix their own car. I believe that everybody that owns a car should know a little something about it.
Scotty, please mention which Generic Brand Catalyst Converters are better for Mazda protege 1999. I want to buy it and ask my Mechanic to change it for me. I prefer something which needs less modification and compatible with OBDII.
scotty, i have a bad cat and sadly i dont have much money to fix it would u recommend that i hollow out my cat? or just have my local muffler shop weld a strait pipe hope you can help. thanks.
The CC on my '86 Buick has a 1/2" diameter tube running into the side of it which is rusted through and not connected anymore. What is it for and do I need to reconnect it or can I just pinch it off and disregard it? Thanks....
Scotty,I have a tentioner guide that is held on by some kind of button.I have removed the timing chain tentioner, but the guide is still held on by some thing that looks like a rivet. How can I remove this so I can get the timing chain off?
Good video, but he left out one major point. you should also check everything before the cat to see if it's in working order, because there is a reason why the cat failed in the first place. If you just stick another cat on, it will fail too.
Scotty, I have a 2001 nissan maxima. It has 2 cat converters. my mecanic replaced one and i want to replace the other one. Would it be pretty cheap and easy to replace my self. The Check engine light has been on and its regarding the 2nd converter
@novakmanable if it runs ok, i'd leave it, or try cleaning it first as in my other video "fixing an inefficient catalytic converter" by typing that in the search engine on the scottykilmer channel main page on youtube. Scotty
sorry i heard it as if any car was 8 yrs older than we can go to a dealership and request service but i didnt know it was the 8 years from when the car was bought
you can still use the pressure gauge. id just take out the first O2 sensor before the cat and screw it in there. although with somo vehicles it is a bit hard to reach. either way..a last resort would be to drill.
I would only drill it as a last resort. you should take the temperature first. a good cat. converter should have a higher temperature AFTER the cat. and a cooler temp before. The gases still have to be burnt off after it exscapes which is why it is hotter. if the temperature is reading hotter before the catalytic converter it means that the gases are building up.
You also have to remember that the catalytic converter should last the life of your car. If it failed replace it but you should also check to see why or it will happen again.
Holy shit no do not drill holes in your exhaust...lol the real way of checking if your catalytic converter is doing the job is read the temperature AFTER the catalytic converter..if it is hotter than BEFORE the converter then it is doing its job. If the temperature is cooler AFTER the catalytic converter then it is probably clogged. Also if your converter is clogged your cars O2 senso will throw codes.
@stevenmorookian16 Another person showing a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. You can test cats with a temp gun, but cats in different cars work different ways and the temp test is much weaker than this test. NO test of course can check everything. So stop giving advice when you obviously are not too knowledgeable. Scotty
@jbrountas what an ignorant comment, you plug the holes with the self tapping screws in the kt, you certainly didn't watch this video very closely. Scotty
scotty when i press gas sometimes it takes a while for the rpm to actually move up and accelerate... i changed the airfilter which helped but its not responsive enough, thanks
@moeramz Tons of things can do that, change the fuel filter next, check the spark plugs, and if that doesn't do it, watch my video "how to clean fuel injectors in your car" and have that done. scotty
@scottykilmer i really enjoy your videos they are amazing... the car has only 150,000 miles 4.1 liter V8 infiniti Q45 runs and drives great but it wastes fuel like a mother....... about the acceleration question, it uses coil packs and is running smooth, and i only use premioum fuel which is what is recomended so is there anything else that could cause this... maybe egr? or something thanks
@moeramz Often the maf sensors on those get dirty, or go bad. Try cleaning it first as I show in my video "How to fix a car that idles poorly". Scotty
Great Video Scotty. When I hit the accelerator, my car sounds like it is reving up (the rpm's go up) but it takes longer to actually start going faster (didnt do that before) AND the car starts to shake. I checked the tires and they're fine. Do you think this might be the cat?
awesome video skotty, im looking at this because im noticing loss of power ( as well as a weird kick when my transmission shifts)from my subaru legacy and an odd faint rumble from the exhaust when i accelerate, now about 3 months ago i ran into a code which said that my cat isnt really good anymore. but ive been still driving it with the same cat cuz i didnt notice anything bad. a clogged cat could do this right?. thanks
I have a 2004 ford focus, and i think the catalytic converter is burning. The car is makes a low grinding sound when accelerated could the converter be the problem?
I have a quick question. I have a 95 grand marquis and it's hard to start. The starter will turn over for a good 3 seconds before it starts. I'm thinking it could be a bad fuel pump, but I'm not sure. I haven't had it looked at yet because it's not a big problem and it doesn't affect performance from what I can tell. But what are your thoughts on that?
@wasdare32 tons of things can do that, but dirty fuel injection systems are number one. so watch my video "how to clean fuel injectors in your car" and have that process done first. Scotty
HEY SCOTTY IM IN NEED OF ADVICE! CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME ? IF SO HERES MY PROBLEM...I HAVE A 1994 CHEVY CAPRICE CLASSIC, WHEN I FIRST PURCHASED IT, IT RAN AWSOME IT WOULD TAKE ME OUT OF TOWN AND EVEN BURN OUT! IT HAD POWER! IT BROKE DOWN ON ME FOR ABOUT A YEAR I LEFT IT SITTING THERE UNTIL I GOT IT GOING AGIAN. NOW THAT ITS GOING IT FEELS REALLY FORCED AND IT TAKES A WHILE TOO SHIFT GEARS IT DOES NOT BURN OUT ANYMORE ITS LIKE WEAK NOW...YOU THINK YOU CAN DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM FOR ME? THANK YOU !
@MrDjmaster91 cars are not meant to sit that long, the fuel system will get all clogged up with cheap modern fuels that break down quickly. I would advise replacing the fuel filter, and putting a gallon of lacquer thinner in the gas tank with half a tank of gas. Then drive it, the thinner will often remove all the crap gas residue. Scotty
@scottykilmer THANK YOU SO MUCH SCOTTY I AM SO GOING WITH YOUR ADVICE! I WAS WORRIED SICK THINKING ITS MY TRANSMISSION DO TOO THE SHIFTING GEARS, I FEEL RELIVED JAJA THANKS ONCE AGIAN!!!
@SpecLock11B it can make noises, but not really grinding, more rattling. And if so, go under the car and whack the cat witha big hammer, it would rattle then too. scotty
@reilly972008 no, you must measure the pressure before the cat and after the cat. If the muffler was clogged you would have high pressure before that cat, but also after the cat showing the problem was not the cat but something further down. One must be logical. Scotty
Axle stands Scotty. Get them under before YOU get under. You know it makes sense. Other people without your knowledge, skill and equipment are watching this.
@ModemDron haha way to make me laugh! You just stated that it cost you $60 now you're saying $40 lol Plus you can buy a highflow cat for a little over the same price... and you don't need to drill holes into your pipes or anything like that dumb stuff. ModemDron
PS: which modern vehicles take THOUSAND DOLLAR CATS?! name it, im sure i can find a replacement for less and it will work better then the OEM cat
hey scotty good video....i got a question, my check engine light just came on for my 1996 grand am (2.4L), so i took it to O'Rallys for a check and the code read "fuel mix rich" or somethin like that, and i'm trying to figure out if my catalytic converters goin out of if i just need to stop putting fuel cleaner in there every 3-4 weeks....or does it just need a tune up?? after he checked the car the light went away and never came back....do u think i'm safe or do i need to replace it??
Thank you so much!!! You saved me hundreds of dollars today!!! Found out that my catalytic convertor was covered by the federal warranty and I didn't have to pay for the repair. Can not thank you enough Scotty!
@13FravelJ also, cars with catalytic converters are designed to work with them, but not without. remove it, and you might experience power loss. given that the car has a O2 sensor.
@scottykilmer I'm wondering whether I should cut the catalytic converter out and drive without it. I do not want to put any more money into an old car. The law should make exception when cars reach an age were cost fisability factors are involved. What about this option?
@srp960 It's against the law in the U.S., you would be breaking the law, there are no exceptions. Of course if you live waay out in the country, many people do it there, like the old time moonshiners during prohibition. Scotty
@scottykilmer Yes it's a good thing living in rural America. The local Sheriff is more a friend and the local auto repair shop would never report it anything on your car that was illegal. Everybody owns a gun cabinet full of guns and crime and taxes are low.
@srp960 you could have a vehicle come into your shop that has stringent regulations on it. then you have to follow their regulations though. eg emissions parts must be legal for use in the state of residence. one time we were in another state so under the hood. a shop marked the vehicles with california regulations with "calif" so that they can separate vehicles from the rest of the country.
@98770 Or it could be simplified and have 1 set of regulations like Australia known as the "Australian Design Regulations" there strict to the point it's almost a joke, NSW is the worst annual road worthy certificate's, Compulsary 3rd party insurance and that's before you can renew your registration every year (then you have your normal insurance etc for me being 25 and male my rego just cost me $1400 all up for 12 months on a standard 1995 Mitsubishi KS Verada Sedan, CTP alone was $680)
Hey Scotty Ive got a 96 taurus with 157000 miles on it Ive got a code reader and it said code po420 looked it up and brought two o2 sensors upstream. About 4 days later my car was slowing down on the high way the check engine came on aswell as the battery light me and my dad are starting to believe its the converter itself. The car was brought with a brown head but we got a new one and a new waterpump also. Changed oil and flush system Is their a way of fixing it without buying one?
i have a 97 crown vic, it acts very sluggish, when reaching speed up to 70-90mph starts to slow bck down, would this have to do with clogged converters and 02sensors, looking into buying 4 new cats and 02 sensors, will this make a difference? what do i do, /? my check engine light is on, sometimes flashing..
@coronadojose36 It could have to do with them, but have the vehicle scanned first to see what those codes are, they give a lot of info on problems.Scotty
@scottykilmer the cars has now been sitting for a month, just cranked it and the engine is shaking, has rough idle, and when in drive, it will not accelerate past 10mph with the peddle down to the floor!..it obviously got worse!
@coronadojose36 do not try the most expensive ,i recommend you first check your mass air flow sensor i did that with my mustang 94 all you can spend is around 5 bucks for a mass air flow sensor cleaner check it up i fivxed my car that way
Do I ask them 4 backpressure reading 2 know if actually tested?. Estimate cats $610 apiece 12 mo warranty + gaskets + labor $234 3 mo warr = $1500. Estimate spark plugs/wires $285 12 mo warr + labor $126 3 mo warr = $411 Is this best course for both cat banks, random mult cyl misfire, cyl 1 & 4 misfire, Secondary Air Inj sys & EVAP emiss Ctrl flow errors? Price seems high for non-dealer, but must involve dealer for cats. Perhaps I should directly to dealer for estimate? Help?!! :-)
CEL lights went off, mileage reset. Insp + emissions pass. Drove out of the lot & CEL light went back on!!!! Figuring I spent enuf that year, drove 4 a year and back to you again! ABS Light went on & found ABS module went bad, but that won't hurt inspection, so letting it ride, even though it seems it blew some sort of fuse out that wouldn't allow garages to read my CEL codes till one guy figured it out.
OK. New codes point to multiple misfires. Say cats tested bad; how do I know they did?
So Scotty, I'm baaack! Wrote u b4: 2000 VW Passat GLX 6 cyl, 2.8 CA emission (inspection time here again!) w/ air pump & both cat bank codes. Found: Secondary air pump bad (wondered after all these years why the car finally stopped screeching for a minute when it started) $500. Luckily, pressure tested & combi-valve replaced at same time. I say luckily because I found that it is the faulty OEM combi that causes moisture to build up in the sealed pump and ruins it due to poor location.
im happy u have had success with the walker, as so have i. The direct fit converters from walker have been good to me. but the weld in place units have given me problems.

I would only drill it as a last resort. you should take the temperature first. a good cat. converter should have a higher temperature AFTER the cat. and a cooler temp before. Instead of saying it in a ignorant matter. This guy knows what hes doing.
DefendTheHelpless 3 months ago
You also have to remember that the catalytic converter should last the life of your car. If it failed replace it but you should also check to see why or it will happen again.
ShawnCFarm 3 months ago
Holy shit no do not drill holes in your exhaust...lol the real way of checking if your catalytic converter is doing the job is read the temperature AFTER the catalytic converter..if it is hotter than BEFORE the converter then it is doing its job. If the temperature is cooler AFTER the catalytic converter then it is probably clogged. Also if your converter is clogged your cars O2 senso will throw codes.
stevenmorookian16 3 months ago
@stevenmorookian16 Another person showing a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. You can test cats with a temp gun, but cats in different cars work different ways and the temp test is much weaker than this test. NO test of course can check everything. So stop giving advice when you obviously are not too knowledgeable. Scotty
scottykilmer 3 months ago 2
And if your converter isn't clogged you just created two holes that will keep your car from passing a state inspection.
jbrountas 3 months ago
@jbrountas what an ignorant comment, you plug the holes with the self tapping screws in the kt, you certainly didn't watch this video very closely. Scotty

can a clogged catalist converted make your engine run lean Scotty?
Obamainformation1 3 months ago
@Obamainformation1 Yes, it can by clogging up the exhaust and not letting the car breathe. scotty

scotty when i press gas sometimes it takes a while for the rpm to actually move up and accelerate... i changed the airfilter which helped but its not responsive enough, thanks
moeramz 3 months ago
@moeramz Tons of things can do that, change the fuel filter next, check the spark plugs, and if that doesn't do it, watch my video "how to clean fuel injectors in your car" and have that done. scotty
scottykilmer 3 months ago
@scottykilmer i really enjoy your videos they are amazing... the car has only 150,000 miles 4.1 liter V8 infiniti Q45 runs and drives great but it wastes fuel like a mother....... about the acceleration question, it uses coil packs and is running smooth, and i only use premioum fuel which is what is recomended so is there anything else that could cause this... maybe egr? or something thanks
moeramz 3 months ago
@moeramz Often the maf sensors on those get dirty, or go bad. Try cleaning it first as I show in my video "How to fix a car that idles poorly". Scotty
scottykilmer 3 months ago
Great Video Scotty. When I hit the accelerator, my car sounds like it is reving up (the rpm's go up) but it takes longer to actually start going faster (didnt do that before) AND the car starts to shake. I checked the tires and they're fine. Do you think this might be the cat?
achilles6221981 3 months ago
@achilles6221981 sounds more like a slipping clutch or slipping auto transmission to me. Scotty
scottykilmer 3 months ago
awesome video skotty, im looking at this because im noticing loss of power ( as well as a weird kick when my transmission shifts)from my subaru legacy and an odd faint rumble from the exhaust when i accelerate, now about 3 months ago i ran into a code which said that my cat isnt really good anymore. but ive been still driving it with the same cat cuz i didnt notice anything bad. a clogged cat could do this right?. thanks
ivandabomb09 4 months ago
@ivandabomb09 It could so do this test first. Scotty
scottykilmer 4 months ago
I have a 2004 ford focus, and i think the catalytic converter is burning. The car is makes a low grinding sound when accelerated could the converter be the problem?
1967nita 4 months ago
@1967nita yes, if you hear it rattling, then it's breaking down inside. Whack it with a hammer and if it rattles. replace it. Scotty
scottykilmer 4 months ago
I have a quick question. I have a 95 grand marquis and it's hard to start. The starter will turn over for a good 3 seconds before it starts. I'm thinking it could be a bad fuel pump, but I'm not sure. I haven't had it looked at yet because it's not a big problem and it doesn't affect performance from what I can tell. But what are your thoughts on that?
wasdare32 4 months ago

THANK YOU !
MrDjmaster91 4 months ago
@MrDjmaster91 cars are not meant to sit that long, the fuel system will get all clogged up with cheap modern fuels that break down quickly. I would advise replacing the fuel filter, and putting a gallon of lacquer thinner in the gas tank with half a tank of gas. Then drive it, the thinner will often remove all the crap gas residue. Scotty

s14sr 4 months ago
Would a bad cat cause a grinding noise when you accelerate? Like going from 1st to 2nd gear? (I have a 1999 Jeep Grd Chr)
SpecLock11B 4 months ago
@SpecLock11B it can make noises, but not really grinding, more rattling. And if so, go under the car and whack the cat witha big hammer, it would rattle then too. scotty

scottykilmer 5 months ago
Is a clogged catalytic converter will cause louder engine/intake sound than usual?
ParaDoXx2000 5 months ago
@ParaDoXx2000 it can, because it builds up pressure inside there. Scotty
scottykilmer 5 months ago
if he's checking the cat, wasnt drilling a hole behind it somewhat pointless?
reilly972008 6 months ago
@reilly972008 no, you must measure the pressure before the cat and after the cat. If the muffler was clogged you would have high pressure before that cat, but also after the cat showing the problem was not the cat but something further down. One must be logical. Scotty
scottykilmer 6 months ago
Axle stands Scotty. Get them under before YOU get under. You know it makes sense. Other people without your knowledge, skill and equipment are watching this.
onedrydog 6 months ago
its alot easier to unbolt it and look threw them :) Melted cats are a thing of the past only effecting rich running carburated engines
Jthumper 6 months ago
lol if you really want to check it that bad just buy a new one with the money you're going to spend on the pressure gauge! and it stall it yourself!
ModemDron 6 months ago
@ModemDron that gauge doesn't cost 40 bucks if you price around. some modern cats can cost over a thousand bucks. That would be a dumb move. Scotty
scottykilmer 6 months ago 2
@ModemDron haha way to make me laugh! You just stated that it cost you $60 now you're saying $40 lol Plus you can buy a highflow cat for a little over the same price... and you don't need to drill holes into your pipes or anything like that dumb stuff. ModemDron
PS: which modern vehicles take THOUSAND DOLLAR CATS?! name it, im sure i can find a replacement for less and it will work better then the OEM cat
ModemDron 6 months ago
@ModemDron in States like California you can only use cats approved by the state.

hey scotty good video....i got a question, my check engine light just came on for my 1996 grand am (2.4L), so i took it to O'Rallys for a check and the code read "fuel mix rich" or somethin like that, and i'm trying to figure out if my catalytic converters goin out of if i just need to stop putting fuel cleaner in there every 3-4 weeks....or does it just need a tune up?? after he checked the car the light went away and never came back....do u think i'm safe or do i need to replace it??

Hey scotty, If you remove your catalytic Converter, does that make your vehicle louder?
13FravelJ 6 months ago
@13FravelJ No, it doesn't stop noise, only pollution. Of course you would have to put a pipe in place of the cat. Scotty
scottykilmer 6 months ago
@13FravelJ also, cars with catalytic converters are designed to work with them, but not without. remove it, and you might experience power loss. given that the car has a O2 sensor.

Where did you get the plugs to plug 1/4" holes you drilled?
srp960 7 months ago
@srp960 they come with the kit, or you can buy self tapping ones at any hardware store. Scotty
scottykilmer 7 months ago
@scottykilmer I'm wondering whether I should cut the catalytic converter out and drive without it. I do not want to put any more money into an old car. The law should make exception when cars reach an age were cost fisability factors are involved. What about this option?
srp960 7 months ago
@srp960 It's against the law in the U.S., you would be breaking the law, there are no exceptions. Of course if you live waay out in the country, many people do it there, like the old time moonshiners during prohibition. Scotty
scottykilmer 7 months ago
@scottykilmer Yes it's a good thing living in rural America. The local Sheriff is more a friend and the local auto repair shop would never report it anything on your car that was illegal. Everybody owns a gun cabinet full of guns and crime and taxes are low.
srp960 6 months ago
@srp960 you could have a vehicle come into your shop that has stringent regulations on it. then you have to follow their regulations though. eg emissions parts must be legal for use in the state of residence. one time we were in another state so under the hood. a shop marked the vehicles with california regulations with "calif" so that they can separate vehicles from the rest of the country.
98770 2 weeks ago

Changed oil and flush system Is their a way of fixing it without buying one?

i have a 97 crown vic, it acts very sluggish, when reaching speed up to 70-90mph starts to slow bck down, would this have to do with clogged converters and 02sensors, looking into buying 4 new cats and 02 sensors, will this make a difference? what do i do, /? my check engine light is on, sometimes flashing..
coronadojose36 8 months ago
@coronadojose36 It could have to do with them, but have the vehicle scanned first to see what those codes are, they give a lot of info on problems.Scotty

Help?!! :-)
AmazonBlondeum 8 months ago
CEL lights went off, mileage reset. Insp + emissions pass. Drove out of the lot & CEL light went back on!!!! Figuring I spent enuf that year, drove 4 a year and back to you again! ABS Light went on & found ABS module went bad, but that won't hurt inspection, so letting it ride, even though it seems it blew some sort of fuse out that wouldn't allow garages to read my CEL codes till one guy figured it out.
OK. New codes point to multiple misfires. Say cats tested bad; how do I know they did?
AmazonBlondeum 8 months ago
So Scotty, I'm baaack! Wrote u b4: 2000 VW Passat GLX 6 cyl, 2.8 CA emission (inspection time here again!) w/ air pump & both cat bank codes. Found: Secondary air pump bad (wondered after all these years why the car finally stopped screeching for a minute when it started) $500. Luckily, pressure tested & combi-valve replaced at same time. I say luckily because I found that it is the faulty OEM combi that causes moisture to build up in the sealed pump and ruins it due to poor location.
