it works! i removed the old thermal paste and applied the new stuff, left it on for an hour and only used one black support piece and now i get idle temps at 43c and when playing gta4 or bully i get around mid 60s. highest ive seen is around 75c when playing battlefield 2 and half life 2 but thats nothing compared to 90c for me, and its still super quiet. thanks for all the help man.
@bubblt Awesome, I'm happy it worked out for you and that you easily could solve the problem. I'm glad I could help you out. PS Always remember to put on new thermal paste when you switch or remove the heat sink.
hey i just installed the accelero but the temp is still at 50c. i've read about people getting into the 30s with theirs so im wondering whats wrong with mine. does the accelero plug into anything like a power supply or something? i dont see how it works without plugging into anything.
@bubblt Well you Accelero is a passive cooler, that means it's fanless. It uses heat pipes like other coolers. Since it's fanless or a passive cooler it doesn't plug into anything or use any power. The heat pipe technology is the same principle as the refrigerators heat pipes, one side is cold and the other is warm. Did you read the instructions carefully when you installed the cooler? Was there any thermal paste that you are suppose to put on the gpu? Or was it already applied to the cooler?
@utltrarama well i just played last remenant in a window and had the ati catalyst show the temp of the graphics card and it spiked up to 90c. it stayed around there and in the higher 80s most of the time i was playing. there were a few moments when it went down to 70c, almost randomly. im overclocking the card to 840 mhz on the gpu and 1240 mhz on the time clock. this wouldnt cause it to heat up so much would it? gotta say im dissappointed in the accelero, im pretty sure i installed it right.
@bubblt That's high temps, maybe you should have ordered a Accelero with fan on it, it's easy to say now and i understand your disappointment. The Accelero Twin Turbo is suppose to be very good. Be sure to read reviews before you buy. Anyway it sounds like you mounted it wrong since the gpu gets so hot. When you screwed in the screws did you screw them evenly so you didn't tighten each screw to the full but a little at the time so the heat sink fits correctly on to the gpu?
@utltrarama yea i screwed them each in a bit at a time diagonally. i took it off to see if i mounted it wrong and the core was only 3/4 covered by the thermal paste. i went to the store and got some silver thermal paste and layered it on there somewhat thicker then the paper thin layer that came on it. i also think a prob is the black support pieces were stretching the card away from the accelero too much making it not contact like it should so im only putting one of them.
@utltrarama it should stay on upside down right? i figure with four screws and one of those support pieces it will be ok. where do you think i should put my extra fan? its a Antec Vcool Expansion slot VGA cooler. thanks again for all the help man, i really really appreciate it!
@bubblt Was there any heat sinks that came with the Accelero for the vram modules or the voltage regulators. If there are any follow the instructions how to put them on. If you forgot to put them on do it now, worst scenario is that vram or voltage modules burn up. On Accelero's web page for Accelero S1 Rev. 2 there show something about spare parts that contains the heat sinks for the memory modules and voltage regulators so they must be in the package that the Accelero S1 Rev. 2 came in.
i got this card but the fan is so noisy. could i remove it and put a seperate fan that blows right on the graphics card instead? i already have it blowing on the card but the fan still runs loud.
@bubblt No you cant remove it and put a separate fan blow on it. If you remove the fan there is a high risk that the gpu will burn up. Buy a new gpu cooler instead. Artic Cooling has really good ones that are affordable and their coolers are quiet. I remember when i had HD 3870 in my system, it sounded like a jet engine when I played Crysis.
@utltrarama ok that makes sense. yea its really bad. even with riva tuner putting the fan speed at 25% its insane, and i check the temp and its still 50c. i just ordered the artic cooling accelero, it looks like a dream come true. are the ati 4870 or 5780 as loud?
@bubblt Nice, Accelero will be quiet. Which model did you order? The HD 4870 is quieter and HD 5870 is even more quiet than HD 3870. I recently bought Accelereo Xtreme Plus for my HD 5870 and it's quiet even at 100% fan speed and it's amazing when it's comes to the cooling. I'm running it at constant 40% fan speed and it makes the GPU 26C/78.8F idle and 42C/107.6 on load. I've also overclocked my GPU to 900Mhz.
@utltrarama thats awesome. i ordered the NEW ARCTIC COOLING Accelero S1 Passive VGA Cooler REV2. i'm gonna stick it on my 3870 since i've already gone to so much trouble, plus it plays gta4 and some new game demos pretty good so i figure it should last a few years. yea its weird that my 3870 is at 50c after playing games for an hour but its still so loud. oh well. btw have you heard anything about putting baby oil where the fan is?
@bubblt Nice, it will definitely be quiet with that cooler. About the baby oil, I wouldn't recommend adding baby oil or Sow machine oil on the gpu cooler's fan unless you have the technical expertise on doing it. In worts case the oil can get on the on the other components and then you can damage your graphics card.
@utltrarama well i used the baby oil and i think it is making a difference. played gta4 last night and it never got loud, and i checked the temp and it was about 55 degrees. figures that after i ordered the accelero it would stop being so loud.
@bubblt Well if it gets loud again you can just mount the Accelero or mount it anyway. The temp will probably go down with the Accelero. I would recommend that you use the Accelero but if you feel that it's okay with the stock cooler you can just return the Accelero and get your money back.
@utltrarama yea i think i'll install it, that way i wont have a worry of it getting loud again or have to take it out all the time to put some baby oil on it, which could or could not have bad long term effects. and it seems easy enough to install from a couple vids. thanks for the help.
@bubblt You're welcome. My Accelero Xtreme Plus is fasten only with 4 screws. It was easier mounting the cooler then it was getting the stock cooler off.
I find it amazing to think how my Mobility Radeon HD 5870 can totally trash a desktop 3870 these days...just insane how far we have gone in terms of advancement.
@uphill248 1.) You wont get higher picture quality BUT you will get higher Frame Rate if the game you play supports 2 or more graphics cards. You see HD 5970 is running in at leat I thinks so in Crossfire even if there is 2 gpu's on one card.
2.) If the game supports more then 2 gpu's it will us the extra memory you have on the second card, that is if it supports more then 2 gpu's.
@uphill248 3.) 2 HD Radeon HD 5970 will not give you better picture quality when you you use your computer for internet, watching videos or reading your mails. You will only gain from it if you play games that supports 2 to 3, 4 gpu's. If I'm totally wrong please someone correct me.
@utltrarama Crossfire only gives you a higher "Lowest FPS" and gives you the possiblity to max out AA and stuff without a huge fps drop. The quality will not change a bit.
@Fucklesticks MAN JUST FORGET IT, I GOT MY NEW PC FROM CYBERPWERPC AND IT KEPT GIVING ME THE BLUE SCREEN. ALSO I HAD SOME OTHER PROBLEMS WITH IT. SO I RETURED IT FOR A FULL REFUND. THANK YOU ANYWAYS. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE XBOX 360?
@uphill248 You're going from dual 5970s to consoles? Don't be silly! Buy the components and build it yourself and if you do it right , which shouldn't be too hard, you shouldn't have any problems, take from me, my last 2 pcs have been running 24/7 for years and no errors whatsoever. Obviously there was something faulty in that pc.
@uphill248 I honestly think that VRAM of video card doesn't double when crossfiring or sli'ng. only gpu units i think. HD 5870 has 1600 gpu units and if you go HD 5870x2. let's do math 2*1600 = 3200. so fps ingame drammatically raises. i don't know about memory clock and core clock. they're possibly doubled too.
@utltrarama the ram in sli or crossfire is not used at all,l just the gpu, think of it as a raid 0 setup, except instead of having data striped, you have video striped...
hey, ive got the same card but crysis doesnt run as good as on yours. i have an athlon x2 4600 and 4gb ram, but my PSU is a 420 watt one, so i think this might be the problem!! can u tell which one u use? thanks
@Shmalick Sry but I don't have any of the components in my system any more. I replaced my cpu, gfx card and psu with Phenom II X4 955 BE, HD 5870 and Fractal Design Newton R2 1000W psu. The psu I had when I created this video was Hiper HPU-4M580 580 580 watt psu
Well one HD 4870 is almost as fast as GTX 260 and two HD 4870 in Crossfire X well it becomes almost twice as fast and compared to 9800 GTX this would be like 3 times faster, at least I think so. I have a friend who has 9800 GTX and my HD 5870 is almost 3 times faster and he plays in 1680x1050 resolution and I play in 1920x1080 resolution.
HD 4350 has 80 stream processing shader units, HD 3870 has 320 stream processing shader units. HD 4350 has 64 bit memory interface, HD 3870 has 256 bit memory interface. The gpu in HD 4350 has 256 million transistors, HD 3870 gpu has 666 million transistors. HD 4350 has GDDR2 or GDDR3, HD 3870 has GDDR4.
HD 3870 rulez, launched before 9600GT and owns it, HD3870 DX10.1 SM4.1 lower consumption, HDMI rulez. For me NVIDIA GPUs are bad choose, higher consumption, expensive, DirectX lower etc.
That's not enough, you should go for the best. Why not get the latest motherboard from EVGA with 7 pci-express 16x slots then you can have 7 HD 5970, 2 quad core cpu's, 24GB ram and 8 SATA harddrives.
I don't know why you get lower performance on High in Crysis. When I made this video I used a highly optimized config(see link in the info for my video). The setting used then would today be considered today as medium-high with tweaks to get sunshafts, ambient occlusion and HDR and other tweaks.
Nah, some notebooks have Crossfire or SLI'd video cards. They're hot as hell and have shitty battery life, but they're more portable than a 40lb gaming rig.
i have a Q9550 and im considering in buying a new graphics card ... with a HD4870 what fps should i expect? which card is better than this one for about $200 ?
Yes you'll get better performance with HD 4870 compared to HD 3870. You'll probably get between 35-50 fps at very high. Note that if you use DX10 the fps will drop 10 fps compared to DX9 if you use Windows Vista or Windows 7. If you want to run Crysis in DX9 in Vista or Windows 7 just add -dx9 in the shortcut start option.
I use a custom config to increase the performance at Very High in Crysis. I have HD 4870 to but it's to slow to run Crysis at 1920x1080 at Very High so I'll soon be buying a new gfx card.
I'll add a link to the custom config in the info for the video.
I didnt know if you already knew this... i found out on accident. My crysis was jumping a little with my HD 3870, but you can actually start the game in DX9 mode... max out the graphics... and get just as much beauty with 60+ FPS all the time. I was playing in DX10 mode with some jumpyness going on... and switching to DX9 made a world of difference
I don't know about the psu rail requirements for HD 3870 but the system requirements for HD 3870 at AMD's site says 450 watt psu. I'm running HD 4870 on my 580 watt psu with Phenom II X4 955 BE @ 3.6Ghz.
My rig is now built up of Phenom II 955 BE 3.6Ghz and ATi HD 4870, I get between 25-60 fps in Crysis with even higher graphics settings then I my video here.
I've got 3 of these with Crossfire. It's great, however, enabling Crossfire isn't that good when you are playing Crysis. I might have a way around it though!
oh hell, i think i remember that part XD if its the part right after you get out of the jtol, i got raped there. on delta, holy shit, i had aliens dive-bombing me every time i was exposed. its like there was nobody else there, only me. but thats incredible that you could get there on a 3870. im building a computer for a friend, and he's on a budget, so thanks for showing me what that card can do, will buy.
I would recommend that you get a HD 4870 for your friend. It's very affordable now. Since I bought Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 1GB it has dropped 121 dollars. Mind that computer hardware costs more in sweden the in USA.
If you mean how high fps. I looked at a review of HD 4830 and in Crysis with medium settings, at 1600x1200, 16x Anisotropic Filtering and 0x Anti Aliasing they got 32 fps.
Oh, on this setting using a tweaked cfg around 25- 30 fps. You know you can get sun shafts in medium settings you know sun flares in Crysis. All you need to do is create a autoexec.cfg with norepad, type r_sunshafts = 1 in it and place it in your Crysis root directory.
No this is not the ending sequence of the first Crysis game, the ending sequence is much much more spectacular then this. I used a trainer when I made this video. I made a video of the ending sequence of Crysis after I defeated the mega huge boss. If you look at my page here on youtube you'll find it.
Thanks very kind of you, but no thank you. It won't be long before Windows 7 RC1 is released and after that at the end of this year or the beginning of the next year Windows 7 will go on sale so I rather wait for that.
window 7 still not support more dvd game..trust..i have vista ultimate 64, vista bussiness 32 and 64, ultimate 32..but i still use window xp because, xp can support more programing..now xp have directx10..so why u must spend ur money?
i have two 3870 make crossfire..run crysis directx10 for window xp still fast..my LCD 23" full HD..but u must use phenom II like phenomx3 720 Black edition 2.8GHz..next month i want buy new phenom II my old phenomx3 8450 run smooth but speed must down when use 23" LCD..my old LCD only 15"
Ok, I haven't played the dx10 version. Vista uses so much resources so running this game in dx10 is slower then running it on dx9 at least that's what I've heard.
could this system run crysis on low settings?
sempron 2.8ghz with 2000 MHz bus speed

how can a HD 3870 beat a 4350?, my card can`t even support Crysis with the very high config at 1440x900. I would effin get like 5-8 fps
RoroCWalker 1 year ago
@RoroCWalker Because your video card 4350 have 64-bit to 256-bit on 3870!!!
And your video card cost 39$ to 180$ from 3870!
LOL. You need more?)
Z3roCooL1 1 year ago

@utltrarama Thanks for the config! i have mine set at lvl 5 and get 30-60fps. Very smooth gameplay.

hahahahaha
shadowsharpshooter 2 years ago
That's not enough, you should go for the best. Why not get the latest motherboard from EVGA with 7 pci-express 16x slots then you can have 7 HD 5970, 2 quad core cpu's, 24GB ram and 8 SATA harddrives.
utltrarama 2 years ago
@utltrarama Why is that i have these specs and i have much lower fps on just "High"?
Phenom IIX4 940@3.0/3.7GHZ(no diff)
Ati 3870 Crossfirex
Gigabyte 790x Motherboard
8GB DDR2 Ram
640gb 7200RPM HDD
It isnt the temps.. this angers me :[
BiggieSmaIls 2 years ago
I don't know why you get lower performance on High in Crysis. When I made this video I used a highly optimized config(see link in the info for my video). The setting used then would today be considered today as medium-high with tweaks to get sunshafts, ambient occlusion and HDR and other tweaks.
utltrarama 2 years ago
You can't use quad sli with a dual gpu video card, you could only use 2 GTX 295's in SLI.
rsman169 2 years ago
@rsman169
Having dual 2 gpu cards is called quad sli.
TonkatrainHONKHONK 2 years ago
No quad SLI is 4 individual cards.
rsman169 2 years ago
Quad SLI is 4 gpus. It has nothing to do with cards. If you run a single dual gpu card it is still called SLI.
TonkatrainHONKHONK 2 years ago
Yes, Quad SLI exist.
uglychannel2 2 years ago
...what nobody is denying quadsli exist =/
TonkatrainHONKHONK 2 years ago
Hey!
maybe some1 can help me...
any idea on wich performance i will get with this notebook?
core2Duo T9400 2.53ghz 6MB Cache 1066mhz
4 GB RAM DDR3 (1066Mhz)
320 GB SATA 2 (7200 RPM)
ATI Radeon HD 3870 CrossFireX

thanks

Wouldn't it be a destop PC?

mitelradeu 2 years ago
Nah, some notebooks have Crossfire or SLI'd video cards. They're hot as hell and have shitty battery life, but they're more portable than a 40lb gaming rig.
ATI even has a 4870x2 mobile version.

i have a Q9550 and im considering in buying a new graphics card ... with a HD4870 what fps should i expect? which card is better than this one for about $200 ?
tianeves 2 years ago
Yes you'll get better performance with HD 4870 compared to HD 3870. You'll probably get between 35-50 fps at very high. Note that if you use DX10 the fps will drop 10 fps compared to DX9 if you use Windows Vista or Windows 7. If you want to run Crysis in DX9 in Vista or Windows 7 just add -dx9 in the shortcut start option.
utltrarama 2 years ago
@utltrarama hey i have a 4870 and i only get about 25-35 fps tops, is it a motherboard problem or soemthing else
ISuckAtSpanish 2 years ago
I use a custom config to increase the performance at Very High in Crysis. I have HD 4870 to but it's to slow to run Crysis at 1920x1080 at Very High so I'll soon be buying a new gfx card.
I'll add a link to the custom config in the info for the video.
utltrarama 2 years ago
i would recommend you a hd4870x2
EclipseEDM 2 years ago
I didnt know if you already knew this... i found out on accident. My crysis was jumping a little with my HD 3870, but you can actually start the game in DX9 mode... max out the graphics... and get just as much beauty with 60+ FPS all the time. I was playing in DX10 mode with some jumpyness going on... and switching to DX9 made a world of difference

What kind of CPU fan did you use for your AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ ??

It was the stock cpu cooler that came with the cpu.

No it never overheated. Max temp was 62 C during hot summer days. Does your AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ overheat?

I don't know about the psu rail requirements for HD 3870 but the system requirements for HD 3870 at AMD's site says 450 watt psu. I'm running HD 4870 on my 580 watt psu with Phenom II X4 955 BE @ 3.6Ghz.
utltrarama 2 years ago
Hey man how much fps do u get without fraps?:)
Magina33 2 years ago

I've got 3 of these with Crossfire. It's great, however, enabling Crossfire isn't that good when you are playing Crysis. I might have a way around it though!

GettingPissedMan 2 years ago
I would recommend that you get a HD 4870 for your friend. It's very affordable now. Since I bought Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 1GB it has dropped 121 dollars. Mind that computer hardware costs more in sweden the in USA.

gtdrifting 2 years ago
If you mean how high fps. I looked at a review of HD 4830 and in Crysis with medium settings, at 1600x1200, 16x Anisotropic Filtering and 0x Anti Aliasing they got 32 fps.
utltrarama 2 years ago
yes but on very high with this setting?
gtdrifting 2 years ago
Oh, on this setting using a tweaked cfg around 25- 30 fps. You know you can get sun shafts in medium settings you know sun flares in Crysis. All you need to do is create a autoexec.cfg with norepad, type r_sunshafts = 1 in it and place it in your Crysis root directory.

I made a video of the ending sequence of Crysis after I defeated the mega huge boss. If you look at my page here on youtube you'll find it.
