  • One person decided to be a assshole...

  • I'd blame corporate greed and ignorant and bitter racism for the rapid rise and equally quick decline of Gary. People never stop to think deeply about who really profits from white flight. Could it be the banks? How about USX ? Better keep an eye on your town. The here today gone tomorrow cycle is getting shorter. The south shore of Lake Michigan could have been an international tourism spot. Unfortunately we don't look that far ahead.

  • It's not where you live.....it's how you live.

  • Did the full length documentary ever get made?

  • This is one of the best videos I've seen of Gary. Keep up the good work!

  • There is no race card played anymore, the white man is now the minority.

  • What destroyed Gary, Detroit etc was all the jobs getting shipped off to mexico, china, etc. "Its a free market economy" is the mantra...all its done is drive everyone's wages down in the toilet, increased the corporate profits many times...they got HUGE tax breaks for doing this...thank the Grand Old Party. Quit citing the race card, thats as ignorant as the White Citizens Council from the 50s. Thats why black people flocked to those places: decent paying jobs the south didnt have.

  • Yeah... You have it all figured out lonelyboy. Why even bother continuing your edification when you already know everything.

  • yeah so YOU tell me what happened and dont give me the racist crap.....gary was a STEEL town. They started making elsewhere as in JAPAN and the steel works closed, just like the factories closed just like in Detroit. What was there? McDonalds? Wal Mart (maybe if theyre lucky.)

  • I love Gary. I plan to do my own documentary on some of the best sections in Gary. Many people only show the worst sections....I plan to do the opposite.

  • @angelfromgod333 impossible

  • @angelfromgod333 is there a GOOD part of Gary? I would love to see that .

  • Show me a successful city where minorities are the majority. When you suck the government dole- you become a slave.

  • if whites build it they should take it with them. also its the whites who create the industry and then decides to stick everyone and bail...WHITE FLIGHT....blacks in those areas have no money to keep up so put the clues together how would blacks take care of anything if whites kept them from succeeding...answer that

  • Yeah cigarillo, always the fault of white people. Keep playing the victim & keep living in a shit heap. It's time black people stood up & took responsiblity for their own lives instead of always blaming others.

  • Massa, but it is the white man fault sir.And know us po, ol niggas, coon's & porch monkey's are not going to build what they screwed over. What 4 ,and Indiana's the clan capital of the U.S.! fucc In.& da clan. been living here in Gary My whole life & hate it.

  • @mrstheus1 I thought Winthrop Harbor, Illinois was the Klan Capital.

  • @mrstheus1 If you are not there to help build up Gary, why are you staying?

  • The same thing that happened to Gary is happening right now in Pine Bluff , Arkansas . It too is a city where the majority of the population (74.5%) is African-American , no real industry , declining school enrollment , which means less funds , and just an overall citywide depression . Gary and Pine Bluff are wonderful cities (location wise) and with the right economics in place can bounce back and become powerhouses for a new generation .

  • @josephmeyer72

No, anytime you have a bunch of niggas living in the same spot, you have high crime, low education, drug dealing and prostitution. The poverty is way out of control in these areas and no one gives a rats ass about what goes on here. Sorry but that is the way it is. There is no."bouncing back", once niggas populate the area, it is lost forever.

  • The problem with Gary didn't start with white folks moving out and black folks moving in. The problem with Gary has always been ECONOMICS! Gary is just a poster child for the issues inflicting the entire area. When you take away the livelihood of people, ie the closing of the Steel Mills, and don't replace it with viable employment, this is what you get.

  • exactly people on here think the problem is black people ignorant bastards

  • GI is lost!Who would ever move back into the cesspool of IN? Once a beautiful, vibrant city until the exodus of hardworking whites who valued their work ethic, property value and moral character. What's there to go back to?? Boarded up houses and businesses, drug dealers, hookers and risking your life to drive down the street in daylight! Give me a break--reap the seeds you've sown.

  • The ripples and the waves off vee jay records was my uncles group..I got another another family member that was the drummer for the jacksons before they jetted off to california. I'm from gary but I been gone too long to know whats really up with it..I'm hearing hispanics live out there now and I'm seeing white people in the they rap videos..I lived there as shorty and the whole I was there I only remember seeing two white people..Things must have changed

  • Damn I can't spell

  • The young people in this video are positive but have no real power. The failure of Gary lies firmly on the adults who ruined it. Young people will have to keep hope alive, unfortunately I question their individual skills and talents. If they can demonstrate the ability to work together with good skills for the greater good then maybe they might get financing. Ulitmately good intentions and talent need money and power to make positive changes. Gary will be around long after all of us are dead.

  • good point...

  • Gary is a "Model City" SNAFU. It is a situation normal that got all fouled up. It was a boom-town that went bust. The attitude of the people changed. The neighborhoods changed. The white people moved away and took their money, talents and skills. The African Americans got what they wanted and took over, but the problem is African Americans as a general group and not as individuals messed-up something that was working to a certain degree and ruined it.

  • I'm a sell-out. I haven't been to Gary since 2006, and that was to attend my uncle's funeral. I felt as if I was suffocating there. Now I'm about to be 30 and finally working my way through college. When I get myself together I'll help convince the rest of my family to leave and they can live with/near me. Sorry Gary, there's no coming back for me.

  • And that's why the black communities are the way they are.

  • There shouldn't be a "Black Community" in the first place...separate is not equal. In my 30 years on this earth, usually when I've extended myself to help "black people" I've continuously been abused and taken advantage of. I'd much rather be in a multi-cultural(race) community then to support environments that stay in the box.

  • Well, I agree but that's not realistic right now. And if you think about it, we could still be in Africa right now and who knows what the "black community" would be like today. Better or worse; I don't know. As long as God is responsible for making people different, or allowing people to be different (even remotely), there will always be some form of conflict. We just have to manage it, because when these issues are over there will be others on the way.

  • I lived in Gary for about 5 months in 1971. It was during the steel mill layoffs and recession and I was out of work and helping to get the word out where people could go if they needed help. I was handing out leaflets at the budd plant and they arrested me and held me in jail for 72 hours then let me go.

All the people I met in Gary stay in my mind to this day. There were a lot of really good people there.

  • I used to live in G.I.,but what city doesn't have its share of problem shit I lived in the ghetto down south before I stayed in Gary. Same principles apply haves and have nots. Choices and opportunities. When there are few jobs that pay well, people improvise to make the ends meet. But we all have choices.

  • Buchannon st. stand up. GI is rough. Delaney projects is in the heart of the elementary middle and the high school. Imagin that. You see shit you aint supposed to see at a very young age. Lived there till I was 14. GI needs serious help. Used to be the steel city now its just a city but barely that. GI and DC for life!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i luv da city of gary tre 9 al day

  • his names Jihad Muhammed?????????????

  • amen...so sad!

  • It's sad to say that the only positive thing our city is known for nowadays is MJ.

  • the mid-town area at night time has the ambience of a george romero dawn of the dead movie with sillohetts moving in the shadows. I have never been through a town that gives me such a deep feeling of despair as Gary Indiana does.

  • Gary has so much african american history i mean 86% of the city is black. but when u.s. steel went down... so did the city... now nobody cares about us.

  • Wow!!! very nice.

  • Indiana is my Pride, Blood & Soul!

  • Anyone that lived in gary at that time knows hatcher was yhe beginning of the end or gary. Hatcher killed gary

  • Thank you for that documentary. Highlighting some of the talented entertainers, business people and educators who had a part shaping Gary's character has caused me reflect. Many of us benefited from the joy and inspiration they have added to our lives.

  • Overall good documentary, flows well through different topics. I would suggest a different narrator though. Not trying to put anyone down or anything, its just the narration makes the film, and the guy narrating is choppy and breathy and stands without emotion.

The kids at around the 8 minute mark need some more rehearsal, they seem bland and unmotivated.

Like I said before this is some good work you have done so far, it just needs some tweaking.

  • Thank you and i agree we did need more rehearsal but we only had a limited amount of time to put this together. . . and we did most of the research for this. Pretty good for a group of kids huh?

  • nothing wrong with c-3's or any non profits, what is the deal on that?? that is healthy and normal and i would suggest to strive toward it, sounds like a cracker with a grudge with that remark.. damn there are some dumb ass whites abounding, no wonder they get their asses shot.. non profits are good, banging is bad...

musicman4ursoul sounds like an idiot, ignore him and keep on keeping on..

  • There is not a darn thing wrong with "not for profit organizations". It's when people seek to abuse the opportunity just to benefit from the fruits of such endeavors in a greedy selfish manner. The people that are seeking to brandish the images of Gary's past have been known for trying to milk the system thusfore making it bad for others of a more concious and pure intent. The things that they are conveying is in the dang Gary Public Library which is where they got their info from. Exploitation!

  • Why do you need money? Hmmm, could it be to create a not for profit organazation and salaried positions for your wife, yourself, family & friends. Oh, and by the way, I am Black and I'm proud You need to quit!

  • Why not? You need to start!!!

  • Why not? Because in black America, your kind is the worse kind. This is the single biggest reason why Black Americans cannot progress, it's because of self righteous, self centered, self serving people like you that rape our community and exploit our own people just to make a dollar off of things that don't mean a hill of beans to our people.

  • How can you feel justified about wasting money on crap that don't make a difference to our people. Oh, I know! It's a thing called greed! What you are trying to convey is already in the Gary Public Library and people go there to find out what you are trying to sell. I am sure you got your info from the GPL.

  • Are you guys serious?! Please, come on, this is not going to do a thing for our people in this fair city. You are begging for contributions for what? You are stressing the past and in the present we need to do something about right now today. I question your motives, this is a very questionable thing, you are focusing on black contribution only to this city and Gary, Indiana is a melting pot not only of steel but of people.

  • i never knew gary, indiana had so much history but what happen to that beutiful city my mother has told my sister and I about story about how you were able to walk from roosvelt to 22nd and Athur with out worring about gettin' shoot or raped we really need to take part of your community. Now this is coming from and 10 year if i believe u can too and Amanda I give props tp u 'cause u know your common sense

    ~Tyonne Lashea Green- tyonnebkatybaby

  • Hey that was wonderful. Thamks for sending this friend.

  • that was a great tralier, i hope it inspires people to help build Gary's future
