I have an extremely difficult time getting my girl to bow. She just backs up to get the treat. I have tried holding her belly and doing it against a wall neither of these work. Any advice on how I can get a successful bow?
@AllisonEatsRainbowz yes its a rhodesian ridgeback. i have a dog exactly like this but he has barely any white on his chest and hes darker. they are VERY smart!!
OK some of the people that are commenting need to calm down. Ridgebacks are notorious for tucking their tails in, just like the one in the video. So breath people! LOL
1. Teaching the bow cammand like that isnt right as soon as youll have the bow theyll bow every time they are asked to lie down (past expirience) 2. that is not submission that is fear when a dog is submisive they usally lie down, ( but that poor dog cant )or look away and lower thier heads
yup,how i tought my dog to do this trick i got him all excited with playing and suh then i just playfully put the treat on the ground and he bowed,i did it over a few times a he got it in about 5 minutes...this lady bugs me the way she teaches dogs,my dog seemed to learn a lot better and faster when i did it my way,her way seems to be a lot more challenging and confusing then my ways
a way to get over the treats is to use her fav toy like get her wound up to play catch and after everytime she does the trick throw the ball when she gets back do the trick again and then trow the ball and repeat it till she learnss now my dog would rather catch a ball then have a treat
Okay, first off people, look at the dog in general, not just the tail. A tail between the legs does not just mean scared or nervous. It can be a sign of submissive, or respectful behavior. The dog is showing no further signs of being scared. Those would be ears back, wide eyes, bearing teeth. This dog is not scared, and the woman obviously knows what she is doing.
@charmed6057 some people also don't understand when a dog puts it's tail between it's legs when eating or drinking it is them showing a sign of respect to their owners....take a look at a pack of wolves...the pack leader never puts it's tail down when eating but the ones ranked below it do it is a sign of respect
Better to use clicker method and shape the behavior rather than physically manipulating it. It is more fun for the dog. Check out some of kikopup's videos for training using operant conditioning. Search kikopup.
This Worked So Well! :D My dog got it straight away :D except he kept sitting down and rolling over cos he got a bit confused at first :P

tail between the legs is a trait common in rhodesian ridgebacks. mine does it often, without being frightened or submissive.
they're silly great dogs. get one! :D

This is an easy way to train a dog.. By sharing this tip, we can personally train our dog with our own hands and I believe its an advantage.
allaboutdog01 1 year ago
My dogs can't do it, they either just sit and wait for the treat or just lay down, i think they're just too bone idle to learn lol

@chibijessjess Try tying a leash to rump. And when you tell him to bow and he tries to down pull up his rump. If he breaks just keep trying. :)
