Good documentary! Simple, straightforward and frank. The interviewees seem at ease and their answers are informative. They look like a friendly group of players.
OMG some of those guys had played other games than just D&D. Seriously, why everyone always plays D&D, what about RuneQuest, GURPS, Cyberpunk 2020, Call of Cthulhu or something like Twilight: 2000?
Oh, I asked because I'm going to UH next year. I'm a hardcore video RPG fan, but I've never played a tabletop RPG. I suppose there will be an RPG club at UH. Is it possible to play online, perhaps with Ventrilo or Skype, or even a custom app?
Mint, I'm currently playing Vampires/Modern and a variant of D20 Modern focused on kickin' the shit outta zombies. This documentary is pretty sweet, nice to see some videos of what it is about.
LOL, I think most people play those for money or out of boredom. I haven't heard of anyone saying, "OMG, I can't wait to go home and play some blackjack!" That's like saying, "I can't wait to go play Candy Land!"
good video but at least some game examples should be,some role scenes. and in general; rpg and frp isnt slaying or item collecting, it is role game, so most important thing to feel and live the character in game as real as possible.
this was so interesting! Im a gamer have been for a looong time and now im more of a Historical miniature wargamer i have done D&D of and on over the years and sojurned into other games as well ie Warhammer 40K
Vampire hell i used to work for GW!
I think there is a real possibility of having this subject explored in a longer doc
This movie was quite interesting and amusing. I play Dungeons and Dragons, Warhammer and few other table top but that's not all. I like to play World of Warcraft or some other games on PC. Can't understand table topers that say "fuck WOW!" it's just so stupid. Good work.
i really enjoy playing role-playing games with friends, fu** all this sh**ty so called "rpg's" for computer like wow or all that crap... it's an extreme creative and funny hobby. prejudices fit sometimes (maybe 10%?), like the nerd-prejudice or "strange rituals". whatever, enjoy or try that hobby out!
Gaming is a hobby, stress relief, forgetting your real world problems and responsibilities for a few hours to have a fun time with your friends. There's nothing wrong about it, as long as you manage your real life well.
To all the RPG-haters out there: not all gamers are awkward nerds! You just got to know where to draw the line! Sure, it's the freaks who get all the attention, because that's what everybody wants to see and run their mouths about. I know gamers who are very succesful in real life, bankers, engineers, salesmen, laboratory assistants, computer experts...to name a few occupations among my fellow gamers.
i love table top rpg's. i don't play them now. i live in a small moutian town. hard to find someone to do it. oh well. good to see people are still doing it
(continuation from last I am very proud to be part of that video, because I find that more people need to be introduced to this. I think that it would help many people like me with their social skills and with their imagination. So I love... and let me say that again, I LOVE Table Top RPGs and if you don't like that then well... Nuts to you.
(continuation from the last comment) If you don't want to have anything to do with me because of that, hell I don't want to have anything to do with somebody like you either. Games like D&D, WoD, Mutants and Masterminds have seriously helped me to cope with a lot of problems I have had. It helped me to become more social, and it has helped to stir on my fantasy (which is important for my line of work).(continued on next comment)
Hey, I'm Christian one of the people from the video. Listen guys, if you don't like Table Top RPGs, that's fine. You don't have to be associated with them or people that play them in any way. You can play video games (which I do too), watch tv, go to movies etc. you can do whatever the hell you want... but I love table top RPGs. (continued on next comment)
8:30 I like the point he makes, games where you play with friends over the lan are always more fun (and less laggy) then online games. TS and Vent dont seem like a good substitute for real in person friends to me.
Well, I was a big nerd and played a lot of RPG. I dont know if I became a nerd because of that, but I do know it helped me get friends, get social skills and improve many skills that I use daily in work and every day life. Its a pretty good game for kids, too bad its associated with "intelectuals", which means the average kid feel its not cool enough for them.
My last two cents for the day: what many don't quite realize is that inspiration comes from unexpected places. Being and artist and a filmmaker, I enjoy this kind of thing because you learn more about character archs and story archs that help to enrichen your story (whether it's a film or a painting).
Generally (this is not always the case), it is intelligent people who play these kind of games because there is a lot of calculating that the average person cannot accomplish. So, telling an open-minded person what they may or may not play is like telling an author not to read.
This is a good portrayl of a real RPG group. Call them sad if you will but they enjoy playing RPG's in a comfortable environment with their friends, and the social interaction is what it is all about. I play numerous RPG's includeing D&D, VtM and Stormbringer and the stereotypical RPGer doesn't exist, everyone is different.
Do you ever just say to yourself... I wish I wasn't such a nerd? I mean seriously it is fucking weird how you cannot understand what you're doing is not just nerdy. It's cultish nerdy.
Very nice documentary, i wish i could do something thing like it. It´s a real shame that the popularity of the table top RPGs is not as it once was...
I wouldn't say that.. Check around for local gaming and hobby stores. No matter where I've been, I've always been able to find a group to game with. I do think LARPs will getting bigger and may someday replace a lot of the table top RPG. I'm playing NERO at the moment, but still too new to comment.
Jon, To tell the truth I see more people pulling away from the MMORPGs than tabletops. Like your lady friend said they feel that tabletop offers much more freedom than sitting in fron of a PC.
Dungeons and Dragons? Even in the gaming community its a bit geeky. Us cool kids play Vampire or Call of Cthulhu :) And most of us can pass for normal on the streets too!
Vampire? Cool? Oh, come on, the worst RPGers I've ever seen or heard are gloom & doom Vampire-players. Yuck, they totally freak me out, more than any fantasy gamer. I've been playing for over 18 years, and the WoD enthusiasts I've met over time were the undisputed masters of weirdness and usually quite full of themselves...
Usulic - oh I agree, but once you strip out the munchkins, the Clive Barker wannabees, and the angsty emo-kids, we're so much cooler! And we dress better - no flannel here. OK so I am being a little tongue-in-cheek. Please forgive my dry British humour!
Heh, your answer made me smile, and that's a good thing. Well, there's much to strip out, it seems :)
I think there are many rpgers who are cool, got to know some very decent and intelligent people over my gaming years. But, to be honest, there seem to be more nerds who like to tell you about their 36th level Paladin-Assassin-Wizard for hours on end (sigh). There are gamers like that, regardless of system.
CoC is really cool, btw, so there's nothing to forgive ;)
I will admit that my GM, sorry, 'Storyteller', is definately a bit weird and gothy but my group play all RPG's and I don't think any of them even wear black. Vampire is not about being gothic but about the secret night society and it's politics.
Vampire players wear hot black outfits, too many chains, dock martin boots with thick heels, and need sunlight and you call what is arguably the most popular RPG ever dorky?
Tee hee. You're so silly! Some of us do goth at the weekends but we're not all like that 24/7. My vampire GM likes to wear sandals and faded denim shorts.
And the key word there is "addict". Yeah the vocal minority do dress goth 24/7/365, but they are not representative of *all* of us. Just like there are a lot of D&D players who resemble comicbook-guy and have bad hygeine, but not *all* player are like that (not even *most*). You dont see the 'normal' players because they hide in plain sight... Like vampires :)
Wow. This looks seriously dorky. I can see the point to the figures and the physical layout, but it still just seems to fall short of any other RP I've done on forums, in chat, or LARP. I hope that's simply because I haven't experienced a good game (or any D&D game for that matter.)
You sit in front of a computer screen clicking a mouse and subsequently going blind while playing with your "cyberfriends" and have the nerve to consider people that actually get together for a face-to-face social activity dorky? Umm ok.
I played it at the end of Beta and for the first few months, it was released. I thought it was interesting how they encouraged group playing like in a tabletop game. However, as with other MMOs, there was a big lack of AI and the NPCs where just talking heads, the world was not fleshed out well enough. Off course, myself also being a game developer, I plan to change all that and bring more Tabletop atmosphere to my own games.
DDO is horrible. I installed it played for about an hour and the uninstalled it the same day. I then tried to play it again at a later date and found it to be even worse than the first time.
I haven't played in ~20 years : 1985-1988; my high school group. I was introduced to the game just when it was peaking in popularity back in 1979-1980. I remember the first day I played the game with some kid down the street. We played all-the-time. We'd get in fights over the game. Like real fights. Someone steals a staff of the magi and breaks it then tries to "go home"...not without a smack upside the head..sure was fun though.
Ya I'm 13 and plan to buy a starter kit. but the trouble is down here in arkansas there's not too meany D&D Area's. I'll try going to some gamestores and ask them ^_^ Thanks I think I'll really enjoy D&D
ever notice in these groups there is usually like ONE girl just ONE lol i've always thought this version to be very very nerdy i think im a semi nerd but i can never see myself doing this way too time consuming with a game i can turn it on when i have time and if i got stuff to do click game off ya know oh well i guess im just old fashioned lol
No you're just lazy and either petty or a habitual liar since you have in-fact come here and made a quite "lengthy" post about something you claim to not have time for or like.
I got started with AD&D back in the 80s when I 13. I didn't have anyone else to play it with either. Back then it was even harder to find others my own age who had the maturity for D&D. Even if you can't find anyone in your area, at least get the books and study them and make your own games. That way when you do find someone else to play a game with, you'll be ready. If no one plays in your area, then teach them about it and see if its something they'd enjoy. Good luck on finding a game.
Im kind of like the guys in this and if you want to start playing D&D in groups go to a gmaing shop ask the clerks if there are groups who come in to play. I waned to play my hwole life im 13 so most people who play are lke 21 and im a true metal head so i am usually stereotyped as hating nerds but thats not true i hate preps i really want to play this i just started war hammer but really want to play D&D
I want to personally thank you for making this. You guys made me not care what people say and get a PHB and start making a character. Sadly I can't find a group. I hope I can find one soon. Maybe you could make a video about the trials and tips of finding a group.
I miss these guys. :( I'm the one in the Houston shirt, the DM of the game. These were some good times with great friends.

There lies the problem for me. My local gaming shop closed down due to reasons unknown.

I want to personally thank you for making this. You guys made me not care what people say and get a PHB and start making a character. Sadly I can't find a group. I hope I can find one soon. Maybe you could make a video about the trials and tips of finding a group.
