  • this scene should've ULTIMATELY won jeanne cooper her first emmy!!! oohh, how mad i was when phillip wanted to make the divorce easier for himself, and not for katherine. what phillip did, will ultimately cost him dearly. how i MISS those days, when SOAPS WERE THE SOAPS, FIRST CLASS!!!!

  • Oh, she's the best damned actress!!!!!!!

  • That's the same lady who plays Katherine Chancellor now?

  • Yup... that's the same lady; Ms. Jeanne Cooper; who has had many trips to the plastic surgeon.

  • Strange how Katherine and Jill spent so much time fighting over a department store mannequin. Did they have to check Donelly Rhodes to make sure he was still breathing? No wonder Jeannie Cooper got into the habit of flailing her arms around and squawking like a large distressed bird, she was trying to act for two people.

  • @judycadana LOL! Good point Judy. he's very stiff.

  • I wonder what Jeanne's secret is to acting pissed on booze?

  • @Messylin Years of experince, JC is in real life a recovering alcoholic.

  • omg it's the same damn set.

  • God Dayuuummm, LOLOL! She said, "AhhhhhhhAhhhhhhhAhhhhh!"

  • Damn I didn't know he was Phillip Chancellor...he was Dutch in "Soap" LMAO!!

  • What year was this?

  • @marieds185 1975...there is a full episode on here where Kay tells Phillip not to leave her, that was before the divorce and his death.

  • Jill was always a gold diggin' slut.

  • Philip should have never had relations with Jill. How stupid!

  • I am happy years later Kay found a real man to love.

  • @TeamNewAngeles2 Yeah Murphy is awesome!

  • What triggered her drinking tho in the first place??

  • This same man that played Phillip also played Blanche Devereaux's love interest on a Golden Girl's episode back in the 1980's.

  • @vrj40 omg it's doc cottle from battlestar galactica!!!

  • @vrj40 Which one? lol She had many. lol

  • @vrj40

i was jus' thinkin' 'bout that.

  • I wonder if he is still living? It would be great if he came back from the dead. ;)

  • was she in this role good enough to name this clip "classic moments"? i ask, cause i do not know how is to be a good actress and actor both in science art of film...

  • The Phillip Chancellor wasn't on the show that long but even to this day he is mentioned. It's unbelievable how a short stint on the show still is remembered. I am shocked they never brought him back in Soap Opera style of having him in the hospital in a "COMA".. I used to watch this yrs ago and started up again. It's remarkable that you can stop watching and 20+ yrs later tune in an still see and hear about the same characters.

  • @NFitalianGuy more lilke thirty years or more later!!!!!

  • Katherine hasn't change in more than 35 years!

  • It took Jeanne Copper 30 years for a Emmy, while some Amber gets it in 8 months.

  • i never watched ynr til 1990. Thankyou so much for posting this. I actually get to see Phillip and now I know why katherine and Jill always fought over the estate. I can identify when my man left me i was like this designer clothes a beautiful home and a bottle of vodka. Ah men as Margo Channing would say lol.

  • granted though jeanne's emmy was more notable than adrienne's. jeanne's was lead actress and adrienne was younger actress. let's face it, in a category where only the younger actresses are included it's not that hard for any of them to emerge a winner. the bar is not set that high.

  • they fought because katherine was a drunk and she hired jill from the beauty shop to be her social secretary and phillip came on to her. katherine caught them in the pool house having sex, jill got pregnant and on his deathbed he married jill left jill money to be taken care but kay of, but kay took her to court and won and left jill with no money and that is why they fight all the time.

  • LOL!!! Kay is like the Absinthe Fairy at the end of this clip!

  • awesome. jeanne cooper is such a legend

  • Can anyone put a year to this clip? 1975? 1976?

  • This episode is from May 1975.

  • I didn't watch Y&R this quite this early in the series because Grandma didn't watch it & made me nap during this time. I came in just a little afterwards in the series. I don't remember ever having seen the senior Phillip Chancelor. He reminds me a bit of a refined Harvey Korman. Maybe it's the hair and facial hair styles the men in Hollywood wore back then.

    I LOVE Katherine's outfit.

  • I DON'T WANT TO TALK!!!

  • Flash forward to 2003 when Kay realizes that Jill's her daughter. Charlotte's left the house and Kay's standing in the classic Chancellor living room mumbling to herself, "Oh please God, don't let it be Jill. Anybody but Jill. Nooooot Jill", before she has her stroke. Mindblowing!! And it's STILL 5 years later before they give her an emmy.... But then some 18 year old model arrives on the show with all of 3 hours of screen time, and they hand her an emmy the first year. I don't get it.

  • @TimsDale4ever

who are you referring too as being some 18 year old model getting an Emmy their first year?

  • No one in particular. What I meant was here's Cooper (an OBVIOUS talent) and it takes 33 years to receive the emmy. Then some boring character like Amber, or Jana, or Chloe is on the show for 8 months and their first year they're handed an emmy in the "younger female" category, or the "best supporting actress" category. I've seen it happen on other shows. There's nothing wrong with the acting with those 3, but when you compare them to someone like Cooper, something's wrong with the system!

  • Agreed.

  • Notice how long this scene is. This made the shows so much better and more dramatic back then. The shows today are all so hacked together with 15 second scenes (?). Sorry Phyllis, Sharon, Nick, Cloe, Billy, Amber, Kevin and all you other mindless twit characters that drown this show today: you couldn't pull this kind of scene off. And to think that Cooper wasn't given an emmy with scences like this under her belt until 33 years later. What an embarrassment to that industry.

  • Yeah, I agree with you on this TimsDale4ever.

With the great Bill Bell gone, both Y&R and B&B are NOT (don't let me get started on the HORRIBLE writing now and how they SCREWED-UP both shows history!!) the same anymore. In my opinion, Y&R and B&B ( I hate to put it this way) died when Mr. Bell did. I mean lets be honest here, it was the end of an era indeed with his passing. Bill Bell's magic touch, masterful storytelling is just not there anymore and is deeply missed today sad to say.

  • Exactly, not to mention the show was only a half-hour at this point.

  • Donnelly Rhodes was on Da Vinci's Inquest for a long time. Hard to believe he started out early in his career on the Y&R.

  • Soap operas are one the things actors/actresses do to launch their careers. Others make soap operas their career.

  • 5:50 says it all!

  • Who cares how old the beautiful Jeanne really is (yeah she's 80), still the best actress in TV, film or theatre!!!!

  • Why did Phillip leave Katherine?

  • He fell in love with Jill, and wanted to marry her.

  • He got sick of her drinking adelgado75 as far as I know and he fell in love with Jill. I could be wrong but that's my theory. I was Seven when Y & R came on the air, I didn't watch Soaps then.

  • Katherine was behaving recklessly with her drinking and smoking and it repelled Phillip away from her. Jill(who was working as Katherine's personal beauticion at the time) got drawn to Phillip and he was drawn to her. They ended up spending one night together and realized that they loved each other. Phillip also found out that he had gotten Jill pregnant and wanted to speed up the divorce so he and Jill could marry immediately and raise their child, but Phillip died in a car crash.

  • wow i love this video, ive never seen katherine like this before

  • jeanne at her best :>)

  • 'Can Someone post Phillips' Car accident?

  • For all of those who saw my original post of how Jeanne is 88. I accidentally hit the 8 twice. I know she is 80 and have had about 4 posts telling me her right age. I am not mad. I am just saying I do know her proper age. Nobody has been rude in telling me her age. So I am not angry. Either way, Y&R better settle her rwal daughter story before she retires. I hope they make Nikki her daughter. They pretty much are in spirit mother and daughter.

  • Jeanne Cooper worked that scene.

  • since it was revealed that kay/jill are not mother/daughter i wonder if they will ever do a story where we find out who kay's real daughter is. i wish y&r would be rerun from the begining

  • I think they are still Mother and Daughter.....this new story with Cane is going to play into the false DNA testing after it was thought she was Marge......

  • I think that Kim Zimmer would be "Perfect" as Kay's Daughter on Y & R. She kicked @ss as Reva, can you imagine how she'd put Nikki & Jill in their place.

  • @laminage I've personally always thought Nikki would be the perfect match for a daughter for Kay.

  • Mrs. C looked awesome!

  • what i like about these old clips is that you can really enjoy the scene without background music. the music starts at teh beginning then fades out then returns when the scene is over.i wish these nowadays writers would realize tha half naked bodies and science fiction stories and violence and crime won't sell.

  • @travis082185 exactly, the witters are so bad :s I mean, why do they need tp make random storylines with crimes when the coùld make great stories in the old way ... what a shame

  • @MrVerliebtinyeah I do not get how they made jill her daughter then made jill not be her daughter and now she is lauren's sister. Y&R is slipping.

  • One of these days I want to see the video where Kay drove that car off that cliff per Jill's constant reminders over the last 30+ years. Then I'm gonna make a rap song about it that goes like this:

YOU DROVE THAT CAR OFF THAT CLIFF, KAY DROVE THAT CAR OFF THAT CLIFF, AND KILLED THAT MAN I WAS WIFF, SHE KILLED THAT MAN I WAS WIFF...

NOW I CAN'T COME TO SEE HIM

UP IN THIS MAUS-O-LEUM, NO CAN'T EVEN SLEEEEP UP WIT' HIM, UP IN YO MAUS-O-LEUM.

YOU DROVE THAT CAR OFF THAT CLIFF, KILLED.....

  • HAHAHAHA.

  • The house still looks the same!

  • Give that woman her Emmy!

  • WOW! Mrs. C really gave it to him didn't she??!! Love her!!

  • What year is this from? 1979?

  • it was from 1975, this was before Jill Foster married Philip Chancellor, because she was pregnant with his child

  • Katherine was Phillip's wife when she first appeared on Y&R, although Phillip was her second husband, of course. The Chancellor estate is one set that has been maintained on the Y&R since the soap started. I know it is somewhat hard to tell, but that really is Jeanne Cooper playing Katherine. She did have a face lift in the 80's. Jeanne Cooper is 47 in this scene. But Donnelly Rhodes is 38 in this scene. I don't know if Katherine was supposed to be older than Phillip.

  • how long was phillip on

  • Phillip was on Y&R from 1973 to 1975 when he died. This is just a few days before Phillip's death. From 1973 to 1974, Phillip was played by John Considine and from 1974 to 1975, Phillip was played by Donnelly Rhodes(seen here).

  • YR was really amazing back then , in the 80s n 90s , but now it is just CRAP !!!

  • Well that could be because William J. Bell who was the creator and head writer for Y&R is now dead. In fact his last Y&R story was Cassie Newman's death. So you might say when Cassie died, William died with her.

  • I agree that the mother daughter thing was a MAJOR F/%K UP. That's what happens when new writers come in. Rather then write for their own shows and create, they mess somebody else's show up. R.I.P. William Bell. It's a tragedy how this show is written today and it will never be the same.

  • Yeah no one could write soaps better than William Bell. He's partly responsible for Days of Our Lives and As the World Turns for becoming so successful because he used to write for those soaps and others that don't exist anymore before he created The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful. The man a was a genius writer.

  • Katherine wasn't drunk when she signed...she was taking some sips...but she sure as hell wasn't hammered...the divorce was legal and Jill is the rightful widow and heir of Phillip II! She was just pissed at Phillip in this scene...no way near drunk yet...

  • This was way before she had her facelift

  • was this back in 1975?

  • yes

  • she dressed better then

  • whatt year?

  • It's almost certainly early 1975.

  • Interersting because of the surgerys she can barely move her lips sorry but she should have left it alone. She was already older so what was the point she looks artificial now thats why i hate plastic surgery i believe in growing old naturally but of course i still look young for my age lol at 32

  • I don't think Jeanne Cooper overdid it, i mean you can tell NOW that she'd had at least one facelift, cause her skin/hands/ neck are terribly wrinkled and her face isn't. But can you really blame someone who is just finding tv success at 47 years old? Bravo to her for having an almost 40 year career where nowadays someone would NEVER get a big starring role at this age. Nice to look back and see older actors being front and center of show. Take Hill STreet Blues for example, no kids on there!

  • Well its just that she doesnt look like herself and thats why I dont know why people do it. ITs scarry to me to see a person and then years later I dont even recognize them. She wasnt a bad looking woman for her age when she started out and I feel that if she hadnt had all that plastic surgery she would look older sure but she is about 80 that is to be expected but she will look real. plastic surgery makes a person look artifical. But to each his/her own lol. I am gonna just age gracefully .

  • But i just explained the reason why she probably did it, to be mid-40s starting out, thought it could prolong her career. Maybe it achieved that, at least she didn't hide it. I don't personally know her reasons. The only other prominent person that old on the show then was Julianne McCarthy, but not in a leading role like Jeanne was. There may have been some pressure she put on herself not too look so haggard, as many on this site say she did! lol.

  • Yes I can see why she did it but doesnt she look at herself in the mirror and see that she doesnt look at all like herself? Yes there can be pressure in the soap business to always look young and attractive but lets face it its not a real way to look at things.Outer beauty fades and we get older which is a blessing to me if you live that long with all your facilities so people should realize that and stop trying be an age that they arent anymore and celebrate the age that they are.

  • Jeanne Cooper is 88 years old. I hope she lives a lot longer. She is such a big part of the show. Y&R is the only show that rights great storys for actors 40+, 50+ 60+, etc. The rest focus on actors in their 20's.

  • Yes I do too and I agree that other shows focus on actors in their 20s and its a shame cause its the older actors and actresses that are the backbone of the shows in the first place! Dont know what writers and executive producers be thinking why do they want to lose their long time viewers? I am only 32 but I have to admit that it is the olders characters that sturr my interest cause i have enough sense to know they started it all and if not for them there would be no younger characters lol.

  • Jeanne Cooper is a wonderful actress and definitely the backbone of the show today. However, she has only just turned 80 years old--not 88. Let's just hope we still have her on the show for another 8 years--or another 18!

  • Miss Cooper is 80.

  • She's only 80....she'll be 81 in october,

  • thank for the video footage, this is all new to me, I started watching in 1992.

  • Kay doesn't want the house. Ha! Sometimes I think she loves the estate more than she ever loved Phillip.

  • Good acting

  • Katherine wasn't fucking drunk here! She knew exactly what she was doing! The divorce was VALID and Jill is entitled to the Chancellor Empire, Chancellor Industries, the Chancellor fortune, and the Chancellor Estate since Katherine made it PERFECTLY CLEAR that she did NOT want to keep it,the most Katherine was ever entitled to is a lump sump of money, some property holdings, and maybe some personal items as a settlement...but no way IN HELL was she entitled to the entire Chancellor Empire!

  • Katherine is entiled. The empire was Katherine's family business until she married Phillip and changed the name of the the business to "Chancellor" in homage of her great love. Just filling you in on the history.:)

  • she scratched out the house provision on one document without the other and without initials lol there by making the marks null and void.

  • so THIS is Mr. Chancellor. Heard a lot about him.

  • katherine seems like she was born old but never got any older.

  • ha, it's hilarious that the set for the Chancellor living room has barely changed since 1975...

  • i think its great... i like how YR has, in some ways, honored its history. in other ways it has destroyed it but even as a younger viewer (only started watching in 1996) i like how they will pay tribute to everything thats happened since the old days.

  • It's Dutch from SOAP!!

  • yikes...katherine looked 80 even back in the 70's LOL

  • Jeanne Cooper won a Lifetime Achievment Award back but never a an Emmy for her role as Kay I was pleased she finally won after so many nominations kudos to Jeanne!

  • She deserved to have won it in 1975 for her performance here.

  • I actually own part of the script for this scene in my Y&R Most Memorable Moments book. I hate it when great talent is overlooked Jeanne rocked in this scene I agree. And as you know Y&R won it's first Emmy for best show in 1975! this was the Golden era of the show! Y&R is so boring now it had no feeling anymore it's just shallow!

  • This is acting. I do agree 1975 was the Golden era for Y&R, besides this storyline their also was Jennifer Brooks' and her dealing with cancer. Those were two powerful storylines. These actors, and actresses they have now on this show (the younger people) couldn't act as good as this, and the writers can't even write like this. Yes,Y&R is very boing now,and I don't think it will get better anytime soon.

  • does ANYONE know where to find scenes where Kay came back from the "dead" and haunted Jill, living in the Chancellor mansion? it was sooo darn good, i know there weren't VCRs then, but if this clip above exists, someone may have it!

  • I don't think it was Jill, she was involved with the Stuart Brooks storyline at that time, when all the Brooks (particularly Laurie) sisters were trying to stop Jill from marrying there father.

I think it was another woman name Susan, that Kay was haunting. Susan was having an affair with Kay's third (I think) husband Derek, when everyone thought Kay was killed in a fire. I remember these storylines took place in the summer of 1979 on Y&R. Wow!! 30 years ago, time flies!! Lol!!

  • wow, are you sure? thanks for this info! i would LOVE to see those clips, i could've sworn it was Brenda D. in that s/l. but thanks again

  • You're right gun15509. Her name was Suzanne Lynch and it was one of the show's best stories. She devised a plan with Derek (husband) to drive Kay crazy, and after they were married HE would have Kay's estate and Kay would be in an institution. It almost worked, but Kay caught on, quit taking the meds Suzanne was feeding her, and then the hospital burned down. They assumed she died in the fire, but Kay went back home and turned the same wheels back on Suzanne. Hilarious!

  • I prefer the live "stageplay" feel that they used to do when they would fade to black for commercials instead of editing scene by scene. That's what used to make soap operas so melodramtic rather than reality tv

  • lol. oops typo. I meant 80 yrs OLD, not "ago" LOL!

  • :(.. sooo sad. damn this is from like 155 yrs ago. looks so old. Kay rocked then, and 2day with her "1st" ever EMMY win lol at like 80 yrs ago.

  • What an sob. Kay did everything to keep him and make their marriage work. God he was selfish.

  • Why did Kay and Jill end up fighting over the house when Kay clearly told Phillip that she didn't want it?

Well in the end Jill and Kay each ended up owning 50% of the house. Which means they have to live together.

  • This is 1975 and Phillip wants to divorce Kay. Jill is pregnant with Phillip's son, Cane and she's in her first trimester. Jill is going to give Phillip something that Kay couldn't give him....a child. Phillip was actually Kay's second husband, Kay's first husband fathered both her children. I think the breakdown Kay had at the end was the biggest she's ever had. Kay and Jill met other men, but I don't think Kay and Jill loved any other man more than they loved Phillip Chancellor II.

  • Actually, Kay's first husband, Gary Reynolds, only fathered Brock, and Arthur Hendricks fathered Jill.

  • Jill WAS pregnant with Phillip's son, but it wasn't Cane. Her unborn meal ticket was Phillip Chancellor III, who was born a few months after his father died in a car wreck with a drunken Kay at the wheel. (Who the heck is Cane's father, anyway, and how did he come to be an Aussie?)

  • Katherine stole Jill's baby (Cane) and replaced him with another baby who was raised as Phillip III. Katherine was drunk at the time and she couldn't remember what she had done until recently.

  • One of the show worst storylines, was to make Cane the long lost Phillip III. The alleged baby switching was never shown in any episode. Also, the whole idea of Jill being Kay's long lost daughter is another bad story. Just my opinion.

  • remember they said kay was drunk and didn't remember anything til she started having flash backs...lol

  • ICAM. I think tampering with the Katherine vs Jill history has killed the heart of the show.

  • You've got to do new things with the characters or they become stagnant and stale. After 27 years of fighting, it was time for something new. And it's not like the two of them are Clair & Rudy Huxtable, after all.

The Katherine-Jill mother-daughter twist opened up a world of new storylines -- including one of the most heartbreaking of all: the break-up of Billy & Mackenzie. I still remember the moment that I realized the two of them were cousins and would ultimately have to split.

  • is that our Kay ... the same one acting kay now? she looks so different

  • yes that's her. Can't you tell by the voice?

  • I know it's kind of hard to tell, but it is her. Kay has been part of Y&R cast ever since day 1 which was in 1973. This is about 33 years ago and appearance and voice can change a lot in that amount of time.

  • You might look different 35 years from now too.

  • What year is this from? 1980???

  • I think this is 1976.

  • This is from 1975.

  • Ahhh...Donnelly Rhodes. Man, he was sexy. There was one episode where he got out of bed with his shirt off and the hairs went up on the back of my head.

  • This is great! Finally I see Phillip, the wonderful Phillip they have been fighting over for so many years. But he looks just like the father from that Canadian TV show " Danger Bay ". Is that who he is? Thank you for sharing

  • Yes - it's the same actor: Donnelly Rhodes.

  • Hoffman8101 I like this video, and all the others of Phillip and Kay, but, I still love my favirites, Phillip and Jill Will I ever see any?

  • While I like this and all the videos of Kay and Phillip,I still Prefer my favorites, Phillip and Jill.

  • It's amazing that 35 yrs ago today 3/23, this show first aired at 12noon for a half hour.

I loved the old way of Y&R filming 'live to tape' (actors showed more emotions) - it seems as if you were watching a play on stage

  • Jeanne Cooper and Brenda Dickinson was the reason to watch this show every single day! Those two were the best during their time acting on soaps!

  • Oh my...This is how the show should be...Today's episodes are;;shrugs;;;boring

  • Shear magnificence.

  • amber recently suggested katherine write a book based on her life that sounds captivating i think she's considering it would be a nice way to commemorate the anniverasy of the show

  • god...I miss "this" show

  • I have read that Jeanne Cooper is writing a book in real life too. I hope that life and fiction cross and we get to read it

  • This is fantastic! Thanks so much.

  • I'll be doing more. keep watching! :)

  • What a great actress she is!
