@hughster41 Wow, look at you! Mr. Red Herring! Find one or two statistics where Canada fares worse than the US and you have to be all IN YOUR FACE! as though that somehow justifies how backward our country is.
@hughster41 Canada is BY FAR a safer place to live compared to most parts of the US. I've never understood why Americans are so passionate about guns.. False sense of security I suppose?
Man I would love it if the tea baggers would blow up in the GOPs face, alas, they're too retarded to do it through enlightenment, so it has to happen by sheer luck.
Just gotta remember to not get your hopes up. When they proposed passing a clean version, with the tea baggers fucking around & a couple of dems not liking the deal, I actually thought it was Wall St.'s way of saying "OK you've played politics, we're not getting close to the deadline", but as always when I hope, I get fucked.
@hughster41 What specific answer you want me to give you? I'll let idiots like yourselves believe whatever you want and let you live in your delusional world. There are no amount of facts that will be good enough for lunatics. Again, my simple response is: Ask your Republican buddies.
@hughster41 Sure. And, in the U.S. there are legal restrictions to speech against obscenity, defamation, incitement to riot, harassment, privileged communications, trade secrets, classified materials, military conduct, commercial speech, and more. So, by your logic, Americans must also have "no freedom of speech." So, what was the point of your comment, then?
1) i find it sad (understandably) when by my fellow Indians run to work for an American company for high paying roles that are way below their expertise and qualification
2) i find it funny when my American friends complain about the lack of jobs - hello you guys know more than Eisenstein and you live in the land of the free market and the home of the brave entrepreneurs
if i may now plug my song Quit Your Job (and do something you believe in) /watch?v=qjSA7GoXNy4
@hughster41 "No freedom of speech"??? Do you know what section 2(b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms says? How about section 1(d) of the Canadian Bill of Rights? Do you know that the Canadian Implied Bill of Rights is, and how it relates to the government's ability to restrict speech? ...isn't it funny how the comment by @MakoSharkX , to which you responded, was about certain people being uninformed?
Tell me, if the US is a sovereign nation and has a constitution that clearly states that it can create it's own currency, it has, and actually still does in in coin, so why does our federal government not strike some coin and pay off the debt and give the finger to the 'Federal Reserve?'
Is that just too easy? Do the bankers really put that much fear into our elected officials? If so, just what is that fear???
It's pretty obvious that the GOP LOVES corporate welfare. They want to continue to allow the 96% of Americans who make under 250,000 to be slaves to corporate America while the 4% of American "fat cats" live the lifestyle of the rich and famous. What would Jesus say, you "religious" Republicans?
Republicans: you won't be able to take money with you when you're sixfeet under! How hypocritical: so many Republicans claim to be "religious," yet the cardinal sin of all, greed, is part of their life.
@insa526 You forgot to mention that after the BP oil spill, no bill was passed to reform the industry's 1960's clean-up protocol. It's pretty much like using paper towels, but they have the technology to drill 5000 feet under the sea. Anyway, guess who blocked the bill? Republicans. I guess it would cost the oil companies too much money to invest in safer drilling or better clean-up technology. This is of course despite record profits. Republicans are corporate whores.
Republicans want cuts to the elderly, seniors on Medicare, Social Security beneficiaries, YET THEY REFUSE TO RAISE TAXES on Paris Hilton, Tom Cruise & Oprah and wealthy rappers and movie stars. Republicans refuse to end the 4 billion a year Oil Subsidies even though President Obama has said they NEED to end. They also REFUSE to raise taxes on wealthy Wall Street brokers, bankers and billionaires and those making money from the middle class/ working class poor which are ALREADY worked to death.
The Republican Party is dying. Republicans, by in large, are ANTI-gay, ANTI-poor, ANTI-minority, and anti anything who isn't Rich, White, or Wealthy. The younger generation doesn't like that obese, balding, filthy-rich, racist buffoon: Rush Limbaugh, nor do they like the "bimbo" from Alaska who QUIT on the people of Alaska to chase millions at FLAWED NEWS (Fox News). She's intellectually deficient along with Newt, Trump, Huckabee, McCain et al.
Newsflash....Republicans approval rating is MUCH LOWER than Democrats and much much lower the President Obama. Go to Sarah Palin's page and worship your big-boobed bimbo goddess there...yes the one who QUIT 2 years into her governorship in Alaska to chase millions at FLAWED (Fox) News. OooH how presidential Sarah Palin.
That's my point. If you're so concerned about the deficit, help out a little. The Bush tax breaks have added more to the deficit than both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined.
The United States is the only major country without a national value-added tax and its sales taxes are lowest in the OECD. Likewise, U.S. fuel and sin taxes are at the bottom among rich countries. And generous tax breaks mean many businesses and individuals pay few taxes, placing a heavy burden on a relatively narrow tax base.
On the corporate side, Mr. Hufbauer pointed out that U.S. tax rates are high by international standards, but special corporate entities created by Congress dramatically shrinks the corporate tax base. While business taxes average 22 per cent of GDP in the OECD, the ratio is just 13 per cent in the U.S.

“Either Americans don’t realize their economy is taxed less than other major economies, or they just have a different standard of what an appropriate tax level is,” said Prof. Betcherman, who spent a decade at the World Bank in Washington.
The total tax burden on Americans, as a percentage of gross domestic product, stood at 24 per cent in 2009 – lower than it was in 1965 and still falling. That compares to 31.1 per cent in Canada, 34.3 per cent in Britain, 42 per cent in France, 37 per cent in Germany and 43.5 per cent in Italy. The Japanese, Australians and South Koreans all pay significantly more.
There is no doubt the Tea party manufactured this crisis. They held the nation's and global economy hostage for their crazy political beliefs. Thus, the democrats had to cave to avoid a worldwide financial calamity. All this for a simple debt ceiling raise, which has never been a problem before(Reagan-18 times, Bush Sr.-4 times, Bush Jr.-5 times). The Tea Party can move to their own country, because they have just proven they aren't American. Go dictate somewhere else, and far away.
We get to see what a bunch of corporate whores, most politicians are. A few Democrats and Independents represent the people, but all the rest suck corporate cock.
If you expect the government can create jobs better then the private sector, you must believe that perpetual motion exists. If you believe wall street is as kind to the poor as the government, you must be my harsh dad. If you believe that we don't need a balanced budget amendment, you must be rooting for the economic collapse of america. If you believe we don't need to increase taxes to pay off the debt, and cut spending, you should just go ahead and shoot your children's future. Ron Paul 2012!
I've never seen a group of immature, whiny individuals given as much credibility as the Tea Party. It's hilarious that they compare themselves favorably to the Founding Fathers. The Founding Fathers were for the most part the cutting edge intellectuals and social elites of their day. The Tea Party is composed of the dregs of the (already intellectually marginalized) modern Conservative movement. They would be laughed out of the Constitutional Convention.
@rocky19421 Agreed, And it galls me that the media goes along with the notion that these [typically] aging white rural conservative malcontents, most of whom, I am certain, voted for Bush twice, represent something new on the political scene. FOX News and the right wing Clear Channel radio thugs provided a fortune in free advertising and Dick Army, a long time insider, and his cohorts, like the Koch brothers, provided funding. They are simply ill educated GOP extremists. Period.
@rocky19421 i think we should make a new amendment, "henceforth whosoever proposes an amendment to the constitution must prove that they can spell the words "constitutional" and "amendment"."
When OReilly comes on, I switch to Fox BUSINESS News and watch Judge Andrew Napolitano on "Freedom Watch." I get the news of the day and learn about the Constitution! What a deal!
If you are a truth seeker, search "Truth Contest" in Google and click on the 1st result, then open The Present and read what it says. Everyone needs to see this. The Present will turn this world right-side up if it reaches enough people.
Why does Cenk care so much about squeezing every penny out of corporate jets and yachts? Rich people just simply wont buy as much. Instead of hurting rich people, it'll only hurt the working people who make the damn things.
lots of polorizing chatter, this is what they want... let's change the game and put our differences aside to UNITE. UnitedWeStand... what unites us is greater than what divides us! We can change the face of the game
@hodoprime Just watch and learn how the Democrats are exposing these fake republican tea party nuts. Hasn't it occurred to you yet that the dems are are just watching as the Republican party implode on itself? Sometimes, just playing it out is the best way to show the people just what kind of idiots and liers these tea partiers are.
2.5 Trillion dollars in spending cuts to programs which benefit the American people. 70% of that = the TAX BREAK given to the richest people in the country. It's time to overthrow your leadership, Americans. Try a democracy this time.
I hope the Republicans fuck the debt ceiling so Obama uses 14th amendment to raise the debt ceiling. He will look so much better in peoples perspective. I am pretty sure dems will gain another majority in 2012, but i don't know whether Obama will win or not compared to Bachmann and Romney.
Corporate america and their cronies in both parties are saying that tax increases will increase unemployment. Really? Well if you look at corporate balance sheets in, say, only the S&P 100, many companies are sitting on huge cash positions. And, interest rates cant go any lower. So this begs the question, why arent companies hiring? Uncertainty in the markets? Please! Save the bs. They want exponential growth driven by exponential productivity. That means less hiring and more cash for execs.
why don't we balance the budget off of the millitary. Half of the budget is the millitary. bring the troops home and stop making aircraft carriers. With a nuclear deterient and a armed population. What county would attack us?
@MrRichardwinkel Fucking lies, Defense spending isn't ANYWHERE near 50%. The nuclear deterrent and armed population really stopped crazy religious fanatical muslims from murdering thousands of innocent Americans on our own soil...

Let me guess, you went to the anti war liberal pussy website that insanely adds the interest payments as military spending for no reason. Sorry child, I get my stuff from facts. Not left wing pussies.
One important fact that never gets the attention it deserves.
The "raising taxes" that the Dems wanted is not any tax on middle America.
It was ending the Bush tax cuts for the rich (& even that was dropped) and ending the tax loopholes for the rich and the corporations that the lobbyist's go over the last decades.
In other words the only thing the Tea Baggers & Rep's accomplished is ensuring the wealthy still have their tax loopholes & taxpayers still have to subsidize big oil.
Wall street is extremely shortsighted (as if the mortgage investment fiasco didn't make it cleqr!) -- they unleased all that tea party hate, and now they've realized they created a bunch of "no-nothings" who don't even know when to quit while they're ahead. The US is going to sink.
Anyone want to start an Anti-Corporation Liberation Front? We can go around dismantling corporations. I bet now that I've typed this though I'll be promptly arrested and interrogated for being a suspected terrorist.
I don't miss the young Turks too much anymore, Dylan Ratigan is much better at arguing my viewpoint of who wall street has in their pockets! It's not just the republicans Cenk, it's both parties. I hate to stick up for the tea party, but if there is one group who surely isn't in bed with wall street, it is that group.
"Wall Street runs the Republican party..." Astonishing. ASTONISHING whether it's FOX or TYT, you can say anything in America and people won't look it up. Wall Street has switched wildly back & forth between supporting democrats or republicans, usually both. E.g. google "Democrats are darlings of Wall St" (Los Angeles Times March 2008) gives summary of Wall Street donations.
2000: Bush: 4 million. Gore: 1.4 million
MARCH 2008: Obama: $6.03 million. McCain: $2.59 million.
@BlackLabelSlushie look into the details of what the various politicians do. Both parties are in the pocket of wall st. but the Republicans are that much worse. so stfu, watch more tyt to see what Cenk means, and get your shit together.
@BlackLabelSlushie The end of the video explicitly describes the democratic relationship with the GOP in Washington as a Good Cop Bad Cop relationship, which I think directly implies that the Dems are also, on the whole, servants to those with wealth and power.
@BlackLabelSlushie Probably because Obama was a Repub from the whole time, planning to use a liberal and democratic platform to get barely to no liberal changes into the gov but having the support of much of the dem party for what ever he does since he has a D by his name. It was much smarter to put in a guy who looked like he would fix everything and then backstab everyone on his way down then another Bush, which everyone would easily go against from day 1.
The deal they're about to make is crap. Obama should have insisted on either a clean bill or a bill that included revenues. He is forcing Dems to betray their supporters. I've always defended him to the left and right. I'm now open to a Dem alternative, be it Howard Dean, Andrew Cuomo or any liberal.
low priority compared to not taxing anyone or spending anything on infrastructure or regulating finance, but they need to re-arrange welfare at some point, to ensure richer folk who can comprehend the paperwork or pay a lawyer who can can't get special benefits, and to make sure poorer folk don't have to lie about doing things they're not to get welfare they need to live off and so they can live comfortably if they work or get educated and move up in the world if they want to
Even in the US there are holes that let people cheat welfare, I know 2 people who do that... they need to because of their situation but they do... state benefits not federal of course... far less than in the UK... but we should sort out those holes and give people benefits and help for the real reasons people like my friends need cash instead of forcing them to tell half-truths to get it =/ Better welfare to work, housing assistance, or even better free higher education / training, would go far
It's not perfect. Some get too much benefits, but while I'd prefer that than people who really need it not getting any we need to sort out abuses; a lot of well off but mildly disabled people can get a lot of money in benefits, myself for instance, very mild muscle problems, don't really bother me, I get 35 pound a week in benefits and still live at home. If you have well off family you can get better diagnosis and get more money, these abuses are mostly made by richfags like me
if they pass that amendment we know they won't redress the problem by taking in more. I'd like such a bill because I think that's the only way it'd end up; more revenues being collected. But hampering the government in such a way, tying it's hands, might have a lot of unintended consequences.
well he did start many of the programmes that help the poor that require high revenues...if the government didn't do ANYTHING they wouldn't get in debt but um....that's like saying if you kill yourself you can't feel pain anymore. technically true but...
The Tea Party has manufactured this crisis, the bond markets are sitting on top of trillions of dollars that the government could call up at any given moment. Teabaggers are dangerous idiots jeopardizing the stability of the US dollar. Eventually, the global economy will get tired of the bullshit games of the US and move to another currency.
@Diatonic5th Umm, many countries are thinking about it at this moment, it's pretty near about the currency change. And i agree, the teabaggers are fucking idiots with zero knowledge of political and economic system in this country. They want "small" government, which i am pretty sure they are on some type of government programs. These guys are without any question really incompetent.
@Diatonic5th This whole fiasco has done immeasurable harm to your economy. Countries all over the world, such as mine here in Canada, are currently looking to lower the interaction their nations have with the US economy because if your unstable, lunatic leaders bring you down it will drag the rest of us down with them. It's like the ice on the pond cracking when you're playing hockey on it - everyone tenses & stands still, while one idiot jumps up & down flailing his arms screaming like a moron.
Very true indeed, luckily for my country, there is a tradition of market regulation and when the Bush recession broke the headlines there was very limited exposure to the toxic debt of the free market of the U.S.
.
There is alot of articles written on the subject of why f.e South Korea and Japan, with immense exposure to American market, were fast to crack in the recession, whereas highly regulated markets, such as the mainland Chinese and Indian, were virtually untouched.
Other than now and the near default under Reagan the US dollar has been the most constant and stable of all the international currencies. (Of course, controlling more than 1/4th of the world's economy and bailing out an entire continent twice doesn't hurt either.)
@Diatonic5th Do you have ANY evidence that the tea party collectively manufactured this? Considering that this has been building up for decades and was inevitable considering it is a fiat currency backed by nothing, printed by a country who is addicted to war.
@Martial024 lol you want evidence the tea party collectively manufactured this?
who did they vote for? who have they been voting for decades? Of course it was inevitable with tea baggers electing republican drones so thanks for answering your own question.
go read a book maybe you won't come across as mentally retarded.
@Diatonic5th "Eventually, the global economy will get tired of the bullshit games of the US and move to another currency" I hope they do. I am no longer interested in getting along with collectivists and pulling the cart for the trash that puts them in power. I would rather see the US destroyed.
@Diatonic5th It has been tea party members that have been saying this "apocolypse" if we don't raise the debt ceiling is shit. You want to know who is to blame for all of this? It's the careerists in Washington who find it easier to just raise entitlements to buy votes of impoverished people than to actually earn their re-election. No system can survive when more money is being taken out than being put in.
The ironic thing I'm taking from this video is that the Tea party republicans are the only honest politicians in office. Look at the deal the democrats made that Cenk pointed out. That doesn't help us out at all. The GOP want this bill signed because they win on all sides. Finally we have the Tea party who wants real change and cuts, but aren't playing ball with the other 2 bought off parties.(dem/gop)
This is WHY we need President Sarah Palin and the Tea Party is the TRUE PARTY of GOD HERSELF! We need the Tea Party to take over DC and help install Palin as our next and greatest President. She is the ONLY one who can fix this entire fiscal mess and save our country! She is the MOST ABSOLUTE TRUTHFUL and HONEST politician and our SAVIOR and MESSIAH!
Cenk, as usual you are an idiot! Revenue increases will do what? History has shown it will only increase the debt. You see, you fail to recognize liberalism. Tax alot and spend alot! That's what it is. No matter how much "revenue" the govt takes in it will spend every penny of it and borrow 25% more on top and spend that! That is called a debt! How do you think we got here? It will not go towards cutting the debt. History has proven this FACT! It's a spending problem not a taxing problem fool!
@aSingleDallasGuy History shows us that raising taxes will only increase debt? Your version of history disagrees quite severely with the history found in books. But hey, what do historians know. Do you have red slippers you click together too, convinced that it is a cheap form of transportation? You've started to believe your own cliche's.
@StevenBee2. Are you kidding me? Every penny politicians steal in taxes has been spent! Not only that they print money to cause debt so they can spend more. If you disagree with either then explain why we have 14.5 TRILLION in debt. We do not have even a penny in the bank. We OWE that money. It's our debt. Now S&P downgrades us, for the 1st time in US history! Then we have Obamacase getting ready to cause another 2-4 trillion of debt in 2 years. Every day we are charged 600 million in interest.
@aSingleDallasGuy Foreign countries such as mine are not lowering the US credit rating and working on limiting our trade dealings with your country because of your debt (well, not primarily), it's because your government is considered unstable and unreliable... not Obama or any particular member or party, but your entire governmental system. That they would play chicken with their economy at the expense of the world's economic crises does not sit well with us.
@StevenBee2 ..... Fine, knock yourself out. The problem with the US system is politicians worry about elections more than anything else. Thus, for the past 60+ years they have given in to socialist tax and spending kaynesian models which thinks a huge govt with high taxes and spending is economic gold. The good news is that now it is clear that philosophy is a failure and we can always point to 2009-2012 as inconvertible evidence of this. I suspect S&P did us a favor in the long run!
@aSingleDallasGuy That elections play too important a part in the actions of your politicians is certainly a valid point... though speaking as an outside observer, the primary problem which seems to be causing America's woes, which is strongly regulated against in other nations and use to be in your own, is the immense amount of power corporate interests wield in your political system; particularly now, after the Citizens United case opened up unlimited secret spending on politicians.
@StevenBee2. Anti corporations is the liberal montra. It's very easy to say but is never proven. This is the philosophy that govt knows best. In this country most americans reject this view based on our founding. Creating the most powerful country on earth (even today) kind of shows that less govt is more prosperous than more govt. You are not correct to say corps are less regulated today than in the past. The opposite is the truth. In fact this regulation is a large part of our economic woes.
@aSingleDallasGuy This has nothing to do with liberalism or conservatism it has to do with an unbalanced system. No nation in the world grants such overwhelming power to its corporate entities as yours. It's somewhat anecdotal, but both Germany and Canada are very business-friendly countries which promote corporate interests domestically and abroad, yet they do still have strong checks in place to prevent an unbalance from occurring, and both countries are weathering the global crash quite well
@StevenBee2 ... LOL. good grief. So you think a govt "grants" power? This is your problem. You clearly adopt liberalism thought of govt control. In America we cherish freedoms. As long as no laws are being broken corporations or individuals should have this freedom to do as they wish WITHOUT govt control. In your world govt is always good and knows best. That's why our ancestors left europe to form their own country! Govt regulations and controls cost trillions to companies and individuals.
@aSingleDallasGuy ....fucking Americans and their idiotic breaking down of everything into liberalism or conservatism, left or right; the rest of the world lives in the grey's. I will never understand your people's obsession with oversimplifying everything to "you're either with us, or against us". You will never solve your problems as long as you see everything in such absolutes & are rabidly intolerant of anything that falls outside of your pre-configured view of reality. Good grief indeed
@StevenBee2. Yeah right, keep on dreaming. liberalism and conservatism is not an american invention. These notions have been around as long as man has. Liberals just hate to be called liberals because it has such a negative stigma. When I call a liberal a liberal I often get nuttty replies like this. There are those who believe in govt to solve their problems and those of us who are independent and want govt to get out of our way! You my friend clearly need govt to make your decisions for you.
"The fact that we're here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. Leadership means 'The buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America's debt limit."

McGriff99 7 months ago
On the corporate side, Mr. Hufbauer pointed out that U.S. tax rates are high by international standards, but special corporate entities created by Congress dramatically shrinks the corporate tax base. While business taxes average 22 per cent of GDP in the OECD, the ratio is just 13 per cent in the U.S.

“Either Americans don’t realize their economy is taxed less than other major economies, or they just have a different standard of what an appropriate tax level is,” said Prof. Betcherman, who spent a decade at the World Bank in Washington.
McGriff99 7 months ago

You can't cut more than 100% of expenditure, cowboys. But since you won't increase taxes, you'll need it

And you only cut the constructive programmes like social services, health care to poor, elderly, handicapped, sick etc.

Wall Street has switched wildly back & forth between supporting democrats or republicans, usually both. E.g. google "Democrats are darlings of Wall St" (Los Angeles Times March 2008) gives summary of Wall Street donations.
2000: Bush: 4 million. Gore: 1.4 million
MARCH 2008: Obama: $6.03 million. McCain: $2.59 million.

Very true indeed, luckily for my country, there is a tradition of market regulation and when the Bush recession broke the headlines there was very limited exposure to the toxic debt of the free market of the U.S.

There is alot of articles written on the subject of why f.e South Korea and Japan, with immense exposure to American market, were fast to crack in the recession, whereas highly regulated markets, such as the mainland Chinese and Indian, were virtually untouched.

It's a spending problem not a taxing problem fool!
aSingleDallasGuy 7 months ago
@aSingleDallasGuy History shows us that raising taxes will only increase debt? Your version of history disagrees quite severely with the history found in books. But hey, what do historians know. Do you have red slippers you click together too, convinced that it is a cheap form of transportation? You've started to believe your own cliche's.
StevenBee2 7 months ago
@StevenBee2. Are you kidding me? Every penny politicians steal in taxes has been spent! Not only that they print money to cause debt so they can spend more. If you disagree with either then explain why we have 14.5 TRILLION in debt. We do not have even a penny in the bank. We OWE that money. It's our debt. Now S&P downgrades us, for the 1st time in US history! Then we have Obamacase getting ready to cause another 2-4 trillion of debt in 2 years. Every day we are charged 600 million in interest.
aSingleDallasGuy 7 months ago
@aSingleDallasGuy Foreign countries such as mine are not lowering the US credit rating and working on limiting our trade dealings with your country because of your debt (well, not primarily), it's because your government is considered unstable and unreliable... not Obama or any particular member or party, but your entire governmental system. That they would play chicken with their economy at the expense of the world's economic crises does not sit well with us.
StevenBee2 7 months ago
@StevenBee2 ..... Fine, knock yourself out. The problem with the US system is politicians worry about elections more than anything else. Thus, for the past 60+ years they have given in to socialist tax and spending kaynesian models which thinks a huge govt with high taxes and spending is economic gold. The good news is that now it is clear that philosophy is a failure and we can always point to 2009-2012 as inconvertible evidence of this. I suspect S&P did us a favor in the long run!
aSingleDallasGuy 7 months ago
@aSingleDallasGuy That elections play too important a part in the actions of your politicians is certainly a valid point... though speaking as an outside observer, the primary problem which seems to be causing America's woes, which is strongly regulated against in other nations and use to be in your own, is the immense amount of power corporate interests wield in your political system; particularly now, after the Citizens United case opened up unlimited secret spending on politicians.
StevenBee2 7 months ago
@StevenBee2.

Perhaps, oneday, we will all understand that our government is being run by big money first, then ideologies second...far second.
