  • Hood Point lighthouse was built and commissioned by Trinity House in 1895; It is now South Africa's oldest lighthouse! This lighthouse is open to the public all year round; and has a functioning Aid to navigation diaphone; but is used a a back-up. This diaphone is the most powerful foghorn on the South African coastline; with a mind blowing range of of 20+km! And the lighthouse is still run by Keepers!

  • @Umpqua1012 ...what has this got to do with South Foreland?

  • @WorldWideLighthouses That's just some info for new viewers.

  • @Umpqua1012 New viewers of what? Its got nothing to do with South Foreland.

  • But that doesn't mean you can't find the old lighthouse. There must be a path to it, but I admit that I also didn't visit it.

Best wishes. Your collection is very good!

  • i just found out, you can get a good video from the WWII pill box infront of the high light...never knew that!

  • I studied my Landranger map of Canterbury and East Kent again, and you are right, the old lighthouse isn't recorded in the map. You can recognize the new lighthouse since the legend of the map has a sign for lighthouses in use. This is the one you show in this picture. Then, the map also has a sign for disused lighthouses and this sign should stand where the old lighthouse is, very close to the edge of the cliffs, but there is nothing although the scale is 1:50,000.

  • the withernsea one went to st marys didnt it?

  • That lens came from Whitley Bay lighthouse I think (or Withernsea- one of them two).
