It was all about putting asses in seats & character building & this guy done it like no other ,,,, even to this day ..not even Cena Batista HHH ect could get the crowed going the way this guy did ...Good on ya Warrior ;)
@ultimateone1 Vince McMahon was just being bitter because Jim Hellwig wanted nothing to do with the project at all,or at least as I understand it.I'm sure most of them running down the Warrior on the DVD had legitimate beefs with him anyway, but there was definitely some embellishment on all of their parts.
@SuperDouche85 Bulldog vs. Bret at Summerslam '92 was actually Bret Hart's idea that he convinvced Vince McMahon into putting in the main event slot, which was way more memorable than Randy Savage vs.Ultimate Warrior for the WWF Title.Right there was a rare example of Vinnie Mac actually hearing out his talent on what would sell better.
@landrykkb It's awesome that I'm replying to a reply from 4 years ago! But what I meant was The Bulldog had a lot to do with the attendance and buyrate of that PPV; I know the match was Bret Hart's idea.
@SuperDouche85 I never questioned that nor contradicted you,I just merely was making conversation. It was in London,England,so naturally, the British Bulldog would send SS attendance and PPV buyrates through the stratosphere.
The first time I saw the Ultimate Warrior was in a 10 man battle royal on Superstars that aired like a week after this.I didn't have access to Wrestling Challenge at the time.
@87shadowfox It is odd that he had a big fan base, but he did regardless, and that's why WWE pushed him so far to the top. Like another comment said, other wrestlers were told to make him look good because of how bad he was so that the crowd would still respond well to him. In modern wrestling, it doesn't matter if you can wrestle or not, if you have a good character, the WWE will figure a way to hide your weaknesses.
@SCBianchi I recon because the dvd that this guy is playing was released when it was changed to WWE. They didnt want it to be known as WWF after that.(for whatever reason)
@adestickbaby They Can't use the initials "WWF" because of a lawsuit from the World Wildlife Fund. So when they show old videos, they have to edit them so they don't say "WWF."
Fun debut by the Warrior. Just go out there and hit some power moves. Fans seemed to give him a nice response. Warrior's whole look and feel certainly changed after this.
Idk if any1 can answer me this...But,here goes...Whatever happened 2 Mel Phillips (it was either that,or something)?...I know they let him go after the Scandals of the Early-/Mid-90s...But I also believe they brought him back 4 a lil while before he disappeared again...Is he at least still alive?...&/or still involved in the Wrestling &/or Sport/Entertainment fields?...
Compton, Ca. Artist/Entertainer Maurice WIZ PROPANE Blake is next out of the West Coast, check out his youtube channel its tons of videos, interviews, music, freestyles, commercials etc. Let me know what u think, subscribe if you digging it!!!...remember the name Wiz Propane and tell a friend! The Warrior had charisma and, thanks to steroids, a tremendous physique (hence his backstage nickname of "Anabolic Warrior"). However, his WWF title run was a colossal failure, partly due to his lack of in-ring ability beyond kicks and punches, and partly due to WWF not giving him any believable competition. He got into feuds with guys, and then squashed them. (Papa Shango made him puke, so he wants to beat him up? Please give me a major break.)
@elc1960 Well, if someone out a voodoo curse on me & made me throw up, I'd want to beat him up. I know that was a pretty lame set up for a feud, just saying that if it happened to me, that's what I'd want to do.
@JasonL77 I get your meaning, but if someone put a voodoo curse on me that made me spew 30 weight out the top of my head and made me vomit, I think that punching the guy in the snoot would be akin to farting in a hurricane. Just saying.
@elc1960 Good point, and, now that I look back on it, Warrior's status as a big main event guy lasted only about a year, while guys like Hogan, Savage, Undertaker, etc. lasted in main events for way longer.
@JasonL77 It kills me that all these WWE "fanboys" want to induct Warrior into that bullshit little "Hall of Fame" Vince has . . . the Warrior was the last gasps of WWF's mid-to late '80s comic book/cartoon character era, and the death knell for that era was first the steroids trial of George Zahorian, and then Vince's own steroid trafficking trial a couple of years later. Koko B. Ware was inducted last year, and "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan this year? What, Hillbilly Jim and the Godwinns next year?
@elc1960 It shouldn't matter that the Ultimate Warrior wasn't the greatest wrestler in the world because he had charisma and he was over huge with the kids at the time.he's definitely more worthy of a WWE Hall Of Fame induction than Koko B.Ware & Hacksaw Jim Duggan are,and they were both charismatic characters in their own right themselves.
I freakin' remember this match! I was actually waiting for "This Week In Baseball" to come on after wrestling and this is what I was treated to. Wow! Thanks for the upload
@Derekjon35 No, tatanka is a much younger guy, Chris Chavis. Terry Gibbs is a vet that did a lot of work i the South during the 70s and 80s and was a regualr wwf "jobber" in the late 80s. I don't even think Chavis was wrestling yet at this point.
Wow... wrestling was kind of... crap... back in 1987. All characters and no actual talent... kind of like TNA these days.
I mean, the Warrior does two basic throws, a couple of simple slams, a jump, and a splash... and that's about the extend of the match.
Don't get me wrong... the Warrior's still fucking awesome and INSANE, but the in-ring stuff is dull as shit. These were the days that leg drops and big boots were finishing moves, for fuck's sake...
@OuroborosChoked No, this is hardly representative of "all characters". Sting and Warrior were green as can be in this and Warrior was always one of the most limited active wrestlers. Most guys were worlds more advanced in the ring than Warrior ever was.
@OuroborosChoked what the fuck you talking about? TNA's roster is incredibly talented. just because they are over-exposed, put into positions where they cant draw money and are giving ridiculous angles and storylines, doesnt mean they arent talented. They have Angle, Hardy, RVD, Anderson, AJ Styles, MCMG's, Beer Money, Kaz, Doug Williams, Samoa Joe, The Pope and others. How do you think anyone of these men (which make up the bulk of the roster) have no talent?
@OuroborosChoked In defense of both, look for a guy in the 80's by the name of Koko B Ware. One of the most underrated wrestlers of all time. And, look at the X-division. MCMG, Gen Me, AJ Styles, Samoa Joe. Another great charachter in the 80's was Tiger Mask. Don't tell me for one second that he couldn't wrestle. All in all, you have a point, but between the 80's and today, there had to be room for innovation. It's not that it was crap, it just wasn't that advanced.
Warrior had wrestled long before this and even on TV. This was his WWF debut not his TV debut. He was a part of a tag team called the Freedom Fighters w/ Steve Borden (Sting). He was Justice...Sting was Flash. They later became the Blade Runners. Warrior was known as Rock and Borden became Sting. After they split, the future Ultimate Warrior wrestled as the Dingo Warrior. He was fairly experienced (though still learning) by the time he wrestled this match.
@GeronimoDec1966 I'm not sure but I think he actually purchased his Dingo Warrior match footage from the Von Erichs. Either that or Vince has it and purposely doesn't air any of it.
@GeronimoDec1966 His WWF TV debut, as he'd been in WWF for a little while before showing up on TV. And, like you said, he'd wrestled for about 2 years before coming to WWF in the first place and was on several wrestling TV shows before this. But not as "Ultimate Warrior".
One of the great legends of this sport. Why in the HELL is he not in the Hall of Fame already? I mean Terry Gibbs, of course.
He was a legend in his own day. Every Sunday was a delight, sitting in front of the TV with my Terry Gibbs T-Shirt on and Terry Gibbs action figure in hand. He stole the show every week with his brutal, innovative promos and sophisticated offense.
I don't think the Warrior ever properly thanked Terry Gibbs for letting him win this one, it started his whole career.
@whatever6402 ,,he is not in the hall of fame because the wwe rather like to see people like drew carey intead of wrestlers,,,,and macho man?,,he is suppose to be in the hall of fame,,,hall of fame is just bullshit to build story's its a GIMMICK thing.....,,,
@bLuDcLoT06 so what???? He was as ludicrous a person as professional wrestling is as a sport. Who cares if he was a dick? He did a good job at doing the only thing wrestling is intended for. He entertained people. Well.
@minoew5 NO HE WASNT A GOOD WRESTLER.. he was notortious among all the real superstars of being a botchy wrestler who caused an incredible number of injuries... watch his documentary. i was a huge wrstling fan at this time, and even in my young age i could see he was a terrible wrestler.. in fact, alot of his opponents were told to "make him look good",
People can talk all the shit they want about him. Facts are The Ultimate Warrior was one of most, if not the most, entertaining wrestlers EVER! 10,000 times more entertaining than anybody today!
@marc08110 No doubt about it...for a few years there...Ultimate Warrior was the shit. But I don't believe that he ever came back with the same charisma he had when he returned to the WWE in 96...and his stint in WCW wasn't great either. But still...in the late 80s and early 90s...he was a Warrior...and dare I say...the ULTIMATE ONE!!!
Warrior was an overrated talentless juice bag!!! Mega hype- zero substance!! Also if anybody can make any sense of his stupid promos please fill me in!!
Its sad to see to see Vince and Hulk talk shit about the Warrior. He may have been an ass personally but he breathed some life in the WWF for a moment. They have no love nor respect for him...Whatever.
(A highlight because it was (I believe) the first Warrior rant)
Questions: Please send me a message if you have answers!
1. Anyone got any info on Terry Gibbs? He's clearly a jobber but he's built pretty well w/ the size of an Iron Mike Sharpe.
2. Is it just me or did Warrior get WORSE over time? He shows more range and ability here. His entrance certainly improved from a lumbering moan ala the Zombie from the 1st ECW on SyFy...
3. What does Monsoon say @1:25? A funny plot peas? Cod piece??
@TheSecondIDare Not quite as ironic as Gorilla Monsoon's legit comment to the Brain:
"If he has any kind of wrestling experience and ability, he's going to be a handful" Well Gorilla, he lacked any ability and was devoid of experience...but WAS indeed a handful. That's an understatement.
Speaking of Monsoon commentary, What does Monsoon say @1:25? A funny plot peas? Cod piece?? Somebody PLEASE help me figure it out!!!
@wrestlingchallenge how do you know this? i would kill for my old collection of vhs tapes... if it happened in the squared circle between 89-mid 90s i pretty much had it on tape, then we moved and mom trashed those tapes along with 100's of He-Man and GI Joes lol sigh...
@809Ollie He'd been wrestling for over 2 years, both on and off camera. He was in the WWF for a few months before they put him on camera and had been with Memphis, UWF, and WCCW before that.
Warrior does not look six-feet tall as is often claimed... Even from the beginning, he seemed annoying. I just wish he would have been pinned sooner and more often.
Early Warrior was awesome till they tried to turn into a Hogan clone.
Nice footage and new to me so a great thanks.

@whatever6402 hes a drug addict and has mental issues, plain and simple
Gescajadillo 8 months ago
@whatever6402 cuz he was a horrible fuckin wrestler who was impossible to work with and co-exist with outside of the ring...
bLuDcLoT06 7 months ago
@bLuDcLoT06 so what???? He was as ludicrous a person as professional wrestling is as a sport. Who cares if he was a dick? He did a good job at doing the only thing wrestling is intended for. He entertained people. Well.
minoew5 7 months ago 2
@minoew5 NO HE WASNT A GOOD WRESTLER.. he was notortious among all the real superstars of being a botchy wrestler who caused an incredible number of injuries... watch his documentary. i was a huge wrstling fan at this time, and even in my young age i could see he was a terrible wrestler.. in fact, alot of his opponents were told to "make him look good",
bLuDcLoT06 7 months ago
@whatever6402 he declined induction in 2010 because of the Self Destruction DVD

I DON'T CARE WHAT PEOPLE THINK ABOUT HIM,,,,,FROM HIS 1st MATCH IN WWF to HIS LAST IN WCW,,,,,,,WARRIOR WAS AWESOME.......

@marc08110 not his second to last in WCW.
itchyisvegeta 1 year ago
@marc08110 yeah! i definitely agree on that! WARRIOR IS ONE OF THE BEST WRESTLERS, A LEGEND!!!
Adamson925 10 months ago
@marc08110 Absolutely! WARRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH FOREVER!!
People can talk all the shit they want about him. Facts are The Ultimate Warrior was one of most, if not the most, entertaining wrestlers EVER! 10,000 times more entertaining than anybody today!
GialloHorror 9 months ago 33
@marc08110 No doubt about it...for a few years there...Ultimate Warrior was the shit. But I don't believe that he ever came back with the same charisma he had when he returned to the WWE in 96...and his stint in WCW wasn't great either. But still...in the late 80s and early 90s...he was a Warrior...and dare I say...the ULTIMATE ONE!!!

@shootbinary at 1:25 i think he says "some funny markings as well". Kinda hard to make out though.

Cod piece??
shootbinary 1 year ago
@shootbinary
Gibbs had a short run in the early 80's for Crockett's promotion. Mid card/jobber type.

TheSecondIDare 1 year ago
@TheSecondIDare Not quite as ironic as Gorilla Monsoon's legit comment to the Brain:
"If he has any kind of wrestling experience and ability, he's going to be a handful" Well Gorilla, he lacked any ability and was devoid of experience...but WAS indeed a handful. That's an understatement.
Speaking of Monsoon commentary, What does Monsoon say @1:25? A funny plot peas? Cod piece?? Somebody PLEASE help me figure it out!!!
shootbinary 1 year ago
@shootbinary He'd been wrestling for a couple of years at this point. He'd been through Memphis, Mid-South/UWF, and WCCW before going to WWF.

Bout was taped October 7, 1987.
Warrior had been working with WWE since June of 1987 on house shows.

@wrestlingchallenge how do you know this? i would kill for my old collection of vhs tapes... if it happened in the squared circle between 89-mid 90s i pretty much had it on tape, then we moved and mom trashed those tapes along with 100's of He-Man and GI Joes lol sigh...

809Ollie 1 year ago
@809Ollie He'd been wrestling for over 2 years, both on and off camera. He was in the WWF for a few months before they put him on camera and had been with Memphis, UWF, and WCCW before that.

Warrior does not look six-feet tall as is often claimed... Even from the beginning, he seemed annoying. I just wish he would have been pinned sooner and more often.
