I find it annoying that when Maynard is singing that Al Hirt does non stop noodling even after playing an intro and entire chorus. It adds nothing and he totally eclipses and steps on Herbie Hancock's beautiful comping.
Somewhere on youtube Toots Theilsman does the samething to Stevie Wonder and Stevie takes a wack at Toots with his elbow. Maynard was too kind.
Not has Al got the brassy sting but he demonstrates real feel and intuition with the low down getting mellow jazzy feel. They sooooo feed off each other.
Sad they are both gone. Maynard was always thrilling. Al's talent was way beyond what most people appreciated. As a former trumpet player I must say he made it look like so wonderfully effortless.
the dude that started this video is not Al Hirt . Is Maynard Ferguson then comes BIG AL!
i could no tell where one stopped and the other began unless I watched the video! Typical jazz that you might hear back home in New Orleans i the 1950-1960s when I was a kid.
Oh my what wonderful trumpet work by the great Al Hirt. His solo at the beginning is just beautiful. I bought a jet tone Al Hirt mouthpiece when I was in High School thinking it would make me play as good as him. LOL
HA I did the same thing in middle school, got the MF jet tone though, to play like maynard. I honestly don't know how they sounded good on those things I certainly can't and no it didn't make me play like maynard either...
I have heard both of these greats live. MF, anyone remember the old barn in Inlet, NY? That was in the 70's. Al's distinct style was in notes. Nobody could cram so many notes into one measure and make them all work. I loved the style but was too complicated for a high-schooler like me. I have enjoyed these two for over 40 years.
AL HIRT --NOBODY QUITE LIKE HIM. I heard him and Pete Fountain jamming in New Orleans when I was a kid. All of the old Dixieland classics. May Big Al rest in peace. In New Orleans, musicians are all colors and we all jam together! I love that rough edge to Al's tone here.I knew two trumpet players who came close, Dennis Dotson in Las Vegas and a dude in Houston,TX named Fritz Steuer. THEY were good!
the thing about this video that is so amazing isn't just that these two icons of music are so incredible (they are), it's that ole maynard has some pipes on him as well. Loved hearing him sign it out with so much feeling.
GBCE: based on your profile and your vulgar comment to me, reprobate fits perfectly in this context lest you can prove otherwise. Your immature intellect has everything to do with your apparent lack of "sense". Enjoy the music and enjoy your day.
Two great guys who seized every moment. I knew Al and looking back, he was a big kid in a man's body. He just loved life, and who couldn't love him for it?
yeah, al hirt & maynard were a few of my horn heros'. with al's super fast/smooth runs, & maynards off the scale sonic notes.
for a long time I thought that maynard played the highest...until my HS music told me to listen to "Kat Anderson" who played w/ Duke Ellington....Man O man the guy hits 4&5 octave notes like nothing! it's so high... it's a whistle. But the thing about it...the notes' are clean & clear.
fuckin stupid audience...they don't even know how to appreciate 4 legends of music playing for them!! did they even know who they were???
and rip both maynard and al !!! two of the greatest ever to play the trumpet...i think wynton marsalis is becoming a legendary trumpet player in the future but not for the things al and maynard became legends
This was from an HBO special called, "Sass and Brass" from sometime in the mid1980's. Also featured Sarah Vaughn if I remember correctly. I saw it when it aired, and appreciate seeing it again, thanks for the post!
What I will never understand is how you can have Ferguson, Hirt, Ron Carter and Herbie Hancock on the same stage and at least 50 idiots in the audience can't shut up so others can hear it. Why do these people attend these shows. can't they run their mouths at home for free?
The late Bunny Berrigan heard the 20 year old Al Hirt play shortly before his death in 1942. His comment was noted by the man who produced Al's "Honey in the Horn" sessions, Chet Atkins. After hearing Al, Berrigan Said: "I will never pick up a trumpet again". He never did. ~ R Curtis
I used to hear Al Hirt LIVE in New Orleans when I awas a kid! TWO OF THE BEST TRUMPET MEN IN THE WORLD AT THAT TIME ON THE SAME STAGE! IS THAT AWESOME OR WHAT! I guess this is Al's
flirtation with esoteric jazz and improvisation , Ferguson has always been "out there" but they were still my IDOLS when I was a kid! New Orleans was all about JAZZ back then.
That blew me away. Herbie Hancock on piano! And was that Ron Carter on bass? What an unlikely combo this was. Gotta admit, I've never listened to Al Hirt. I didn't know he was that good, and he even played a little bebop! That was a great solo by him. And MF's vocal wasn't too bad. They're both kinda show-off players but damn, this was good! How did Herbie and Ron come to play on this gig?
i didnt like maynard ferguson that much although he was a fantastic and great trumpet player but al hirt is soo great as his friend and clarinet player pete fountain is gorgeous al hirt 4eva
Two completely different techniques but my oh my! You can't help but love both of them. Al's playing was always so clean and imaginative and Maynard - well, there was only one Maynard Ferguson!
Al Hirt Was Simply The BEST!!!! And a nice man too!

My Dad used to play the trumpet in his younger days (circa 1930~40)...I grew up listening to the greats(Tommy Dorsey)
I came into the world late 1950's...my Dad embraced Al Hirt/Herb Alpert....maybe why Chicago (T.Kath era) rings completely true....

@MarshallsWorld Shhh! Don't tell Bobby. You're relatively on target. Both are on the large side of girth and on the great side of talent.

al hirt is playing in this clip on a holton leblanc horn, al hirt model
trumpetofyhvh 5 years ago
Yes of course but you have to know that there was a merger between Holton Leblanc and Antoine COURTOIS ,
so instruments were the same (body and bell) sold under different name in the US and EUROPE...
WilliamBur 5 years ago
ok, 10-4, al hirts horn in this clip has a leblanc al hirt model logo on it, thanks, these two cats were absolutely awesome baby! Mikey

by the time this was made Courtois made and sold its horns independantly of leblanc.
