Ella is a "Study" of the voice. She will always be considered the best or one of the best which is itself correct but, There are many singers who can sing and are great singers. And then you have great singers with Voices. Ella has a "VOICE"!!!

Thank you so much for posting this, one of my very favorite songs. Lyrics are so touching. Ella sang it so beautifully! When I was a young jazz singer, Ella was my role model. I also like Bewitched, Bothereed and Bewildered for the lyric. My fave singers, Sass, Ella, Billie, Carmen, Nat, Johnny Hartman, Mr. "B," David Allyn, Morgana King, Anita, there were so many lovely great singers, and ALL INDIVIDUALS THAT BROUGHT SOMETHING ELSE TO THE MIX.

This is a great version! Have you heard Ella's live rendition of These Foolish Things from her Birthday concert in Italy? I think THAT is her BEST vocal ever. I had the good fortune to see Ella in '79. Just her and Joe Pass. Just wonderful. She gave her all on stage. She told stories and sang songs she hadn't recorded and had the audience in the palm of her hand. You couldn't leave without being in awe and having respect for her talent.

Oh, so ever true. I saw her live in conert in 1972 or 1973 with the Tommy Flanagan Quintet, featuring Joe Pass, in Hamburg, and once again in the later 1970's with Oscar, in Frankfurt. What a hell of a woman. Awesome!

Agreed! To me her version from "the birthday concert" and Billie Holiday's version for Verve are the definitive. Both those renditions have so much emotion and that's key to this song.
