  • I love this show , its a shame i didnt discover it any sooner , its true to its century i'd say with facts along comedy, as how it should be.

  • "You have been war-ned."

  • 41:22 Star Trek reference?

  • Comment removed

  • I'm gonna get a pair of those!

  • it just expands.... lol

  • with all due respect, i hate how people talk about world war 2 and the nazis being the worst era in human history. Genghis khan killed over 40 million people when he ruled and nobody ever talks about that!

  • @101Rivo How does someone else did kill over 40 million people make Nazis and Hitler "better" human beings? You logic is funny.

  • @101Rivo With all due respect: Laber keinen Unfug.

  • I SHALL ARGUE <- ABOUT THIS

  • I'm a fence and I find this off.

  • I'm offensive and I find this German.

  • If I was Sean I would have tried even harder to tie every little thing back to the war, just to see how low I could get my score

  • can't stand joe brand, shes like a female jeremy clarkson and somehow manages to be less funny, which is an achievment in itself

  • You just gotta love Stephen Fry!

  • Shaun and Rob need to do a tour of some sort together.

  • Actually that picture of Hitler in shorts looks more like a really pissed off Gomez Addams.

  • Stephen Fry gets hotter the older he gets.

  • The thing about the spuk/yelling-at-men-who-stand-up-to-pee thing is they could just glue the seat down, if they never want anyone to lift it.

  • Only good thing to come out of the UK

  • As long as they don't make nazi jokes about the Germans of today, everything is fair game.

Unfortunately, the brittish seem to be the last people on Earth who still do that all the time...

"Don't mention the war" is true, when you're british. ^^

  • @Yora21 Where as in America- if you don't make at least 3 Nazi jokes then you are exhibiting GREAT restraint.

  • @Yora21 no its not true, "don't mention the war" stems from fawlty towers, thats the only reason its still said today.

and just to let you know, its British not brittish.

  • The ones in which Jo answer ALL the forfeits are soooooooo funny.

  • i mentioned it once but i think i got away with it

  • Also the long socks are FUCKING COMFORTABLE!

  • I just come from a couple of videos about hecklers, and I think those people are way too sensitive.

I'm german myself, and I find it hilarious how these people make fun of germans XD

  • Alan's: "So they've been over then" at 09:52 cracked me up, lol. Love that man.

  • I've never in my life as a German seen a thing like 16:18...

  • Stephen Fry speaking German. Ah, my heart, it's melting..

  • They show that "Dinner for one" every year in sweden as well. :P

  • Man, now i want to give long socks a go!

  • Gemütlichkeit is not a german word only. We're saying "gezelligheid" in dutch. Which means basically the same thing. And it's one of the most annoying things to explain in english since there is no real translation for it...

  • Long socks really are nice, as it turns out! Especially on a cold and rainy day.

  • I love that Jo is wearing the German colours... :D

  • I want to see Karl Pilkington on QI

  • @reltubnahte Might work. He's full of random useless knowledge.

All this talk about the Germans reminded me, why hasn't John Cleese been on yet? Him and maybe... Michael Palin... and

  • Jo won because she kept her mouth shut for most of the show.

  • Does the good Mr Fry speak every language there is? it seems so as he uses latin, german french dutch etc where possible.

  • everytime Stephen says something in german, I was thinking 'awwwwww' it sounds so lovely :D

  • i have to say that it's really entertaining to watch it as a german! :)

  • i for one LIKE rob's socks.

  • Am I the only one who didn't need to know these things about their loo-habits? Great episode, though (: I love Sean and Rob. And Alan. And Jo. And Stephen. So maybe just all of them, even if they do put their glasses in their trousers when on the loo.

  • I love Alan Davies! Super gorgeous!

  • great upload mate !!!

  • I love Jo's stories :D

  • To go down the 2nd world war (which happened in the last century) is very cheap and quite sad.

  • I love Stephen Fry's German, it's really good! Nearly no accent at all =)

  • it's so interesting, I'm German and some of the facts are quite new to me ;) the Spuk-thingies for example XD but I really love the dinner for one fact because I watch this sketch nearly every year :)

  • There are more nazis living in Sweden or France nowadays then in Germany, just FYI

  • @efa0tz it's 'than' in Germany. And while your fact may be true, the grammar nazis exclusively live in Germany. ;-)

  • If you've read Stephen's book 'The Liar' I'm hoping I'm not the only one who thought of the bit where adrian Bursts into song "How do you solve a problem like Maria? How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?" 38:36

  • 8:03 "But also they're in their own countries" XD

  • I love Dinner for One!!

  • We have the "a dinner for one" in sweden too! One channel only though. but the same date.

  • "I leave you with story about Lytton Strachey who was a confirmed a bachelor and a conscientious objector"

    "He didn't object to everything..."

Nice little Rob Brydon joke flying under the radar there

  • I don't get the bit about the long sock. I mean it's a longer sock, so what, do British men not wear longer socks?

  • I'm sorry, but I think someone really should point this out.

The longer a thread goes on, the probability that ANYTHING will be mentioned approaches 1.

I'm really quite confused as to why no one mentioned it. The statistics behind is about as obvious as it gets.

  • In Norway we have words for both the first and second word: skadefryd and koselig.

  • How is it that the English know less about borrowed German words than Americans? Or at least this group of English people. And not knowing about the relationship between Yiddish and German? The war probably has something to do with it.

  • @theEarlofChip

Descendants of german immigrants make up a huge part of the north american population and yes, in Britain it is for various reasons fashionable to be ignorant of Germany. (it is historically speaking quite a new power to be fair, so that attitude might change in a few hundred years or so.)

  • @j4ck2234 But I thought the English prided themselves in knowing about other languages, countries and cultures, and that Americans are all ignorant fat cats? Of course that's not true. Why am I even posting.

  • @theEarlofChip There are a lot more German speakers in the US then there are in the UK. In one episode of QI it's mentioned that German was almost the main language of the States.

  • Comment removed

  • @hjt091 WAS is the key word there. Currently it's almost certainly less than a tenth of a percentage. Spanish, Chinese, and languages from other Pacific Asian countries all have far more speakers here. I suppose the borrowed words remain in use here for that reason, but very few people actually speak German. This excludes PA dutch, which comes from German but has become a different language, rather than dialect.

  • I feel bad for Jo's husband...

  • I too favour the longer sock

  • Same as the rest of the world. Fish n Chip eating layabouts? Oh drat they went with tea haha

  • Rob is so right to wear long socks, I have some but more looking like long knitted socks than stockings andYEQ IT GIVES YOU THIS FEELING OF BEING INVINSIBLE. But the naked german german thingy living in geermany i'd like to know more. seriously getting paid to be naked and to some shores is just like the dream maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan

  • Alrigt i'm getting drunker and drunker but, I'm pretty sure that I have a thing for Jo Brand.

  • I can't stop laughing at Rob laughing at Sean during the general ignorance bit

  • Holland boven duitsland

  • @mrhenk007 Meet the German Soccer Team on the playground! Next year, we Germans become European Soccer Champions against the Spitting Oranjes!

  • deutsch doesn't mean dutch.. it means german

  • Dude, we watch Dinner for One every New Year's in Denmark too!! doh!

  • the thing is hitler was actually Austrian

  • haha oh wow, I'm watching this at eleven o'clock on the eleventh of november.

  • 29:18

Hitler once said the same thing...

  • @Whoami691 hitler once said "hello" when greeting someone as well. That means everyone is like Hitler, and it doesn't fucking matter. Good day.

  • @DruoxTheShredder wow, someone doesn't understand the concept of 'sarcasm'

    Good day.

  • @Whoami691 yes, his name is Whoami691, because you took my statement literally. Good day.

  • saw this on Dave the other day, my favourite QI episode by far :)

  • im german and never heard of that nudism thing...the fuck???

  • "The Germanic Rob Brydon!"

    The Welsh were Celts. :p

  • @Angdharagh

And the Celts came to england from middle germany originally..Learn your history.

  • @TheTheoldgit 1. That would really put me in my place if 'Germanic peoples' meant 'walked through Germany at some point' but it doesn't; the Germanic peoples and the Celtic peoples are entirely separate groups.

    2. Last I checked it was ambiguous where the Celts originally came from anyway.

    3. If you want to be that pedantic over a mildly amusing observation then a comedy video might not be the best place for you.

  • @Angdharagh and if you thought your original comment was funny you should watch more!

  • @TheTheoldgit Humor's subjective, fact isn't; next time, try harder.

  • @Angdharagh Hark who´s talking! If your looking for an argument your at the wrong address .Coz the next thing you´ll do is mention hitler and then the game is up!

  • @TheTheoldgit Ok, I'll give you that one. :p

  • schardenfjglhasfahgas = me gusta

  • i am german and i can say i never have heard of naked cleaning students, yes sadly enough we have nudists but the line behind high fences

  • @17:00 I'm German and I can honesty say that I have never heard this creepy robot voice while peeing.

  • long socks ftw

  • You can tell of us dutch whatever you want, We're the reason your carrots are orange. And I'm amazed but it actually really is true, haha.

  • i sort of want to see a show with Sean Lock, Rob Brydon and Stephen Fry trying to escape from a period prison camp

  • @JahBushi Only if Stephen plays the prison break mastermind, Rob plays the perpetually frightened sidekick, and Sean plays the eyecandy who bribes all the security guards with his body.

  • dinner for one isn't as funny as the audience pretends it is. we have it every christmas in norway too

  • @Devoti thats the laughter track on the actual film. Not the studio audience.

  • @Devoti

    new year, I think

  • @2112murphy I'm close to 40, so depends whether that's a younger generation. :) Personally, my father experienced the end of WW2 as a 9-year old boy and could tell us from that period personally. So I have at least a little connection to my family's history during that time. Your question is definitely a good one. I assume from my education that schools today still cover the history of WW2 quite well (causes, politics, consequences, racism, genocide etc.). Hopefully that'll stick in their minds.

  • @2112murphy Yes, I was just jokingly reiterating Fry's line. WW2 is of course often discussed here, both publicly or privately, and there is no hinderance or reluctance to do so, which is good.

  • Dinner for one runs every year in Norway the 23 of December!

  • "hahahaaaa..... we won"

    xD i almost died there

  • Dinner for one is not shown on every channel in Germany (it was when we only had 2 channels short after the period that is not to be mentioned). That naked cleaning service is also not more than a headline story years ago and certainly not a generally liked thing. Quite a twisted image of Germany presented, though it was funny anyway.

  • why is Joe always writing?

  • 1 person does NOT favour the long sock

  • I'm a user of the underwear hammock and proud of it!

  • im american and discovered this show by watching clips on youtube. now that found full episodes i think i might be inside for a few weeks....

  • @AndTheWailers inorite? started watching clips now found full episodes im in love with stephen fry and alan davies and practically everyone on this show, wish we had tv like this in america

  • @AndTheWailers same here!

  • How can anyone miss the loo seat up or down? It's still a large target, only a foot an a half away, it would be like missing the broad side of a barn with a rifle.

In fact if you miss the loo you lose your man card and have no right to say women can't throw, cos you can't piss for shit. O.o

  • 06:00 that's so true, and we right back at them

  • In Fawlty Towers The Germans, and in QI Germany, both had a rule about not mentioning the war, and in both, they were probably mentioned more than if the rule was not there to begin with.

No wonder we told the Church to piss off. Censorship doesn't work here, we hear and we disobey.

  • thanks for posting this

  • Have you tried jelly? Haha :)

  • I'm German and I have NEVER seen those "toilet ghost" thingies. Maybe it was invented and manufactured in Germany, but it is by no means a German "thing".

Naked cleaning is quite uncommon as well.

Other than that, good episode. :)

The German version of QI sucks, btw.

  • @AnonRanGER01 the dutch version sucks too

  • @AnonRanGER01 What is the German version of QI? I'd like to see it, just to see what they have made out of it. And yeah, I've never seen the toilet ghosts either! :)

  • @CightFlub

It's called "Genial Daneben", hosted by Hugo Egon Balder. You'll find entire episodes on YouTube as well - in German, of course, and I don't think anyone bothered to subtitle any of it. Good luck! ^^

  • @AnonRanGER01 Oh nein.

  • @manulito2

Ja, "Total Daneben". Und das war es auch.

  • @AnonRanGER01 nee, das hieß "Genial Daneben"

  • @TheMarievictoire

    Stimmt, sorry: "Genial Daneben".

War wohl eher ich total daneben, als ich das geschrieben hab. ^^'

  • @AnonRanGER01 haha we beat you in the war :)

  • @ZED305

    WHEEEOOOO! WHEEEEOOOO!

    DON'T MENTION THE WAR

    - 10 points

  • Long Socks are awesome :D

  • Rob Brydon's impression of the chocolate orange...

    *boom* chaaaaah!

    LOL.

  • I'm gonna get one of those half-hoses!

  • Not quite true about the World Cup in 66. If you mention the 'Wembley-Tor' to any German it will send them into a rage about Ukranian linesmen. They do not see the rivalry between them and England to be a rivalry because they rarely lose - so it is not important.

  • Lol. DON'T MENTION THE WAR!!!

  • Why is he saying "DeutshlanT"? When it should be with a -d...

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • If in german a d stands at the end of a word it´s always pronounced like a t. For example: Rind, which means Cow, is pronounced RinT. Rinde, which means bark, is pronounced with a soft d because of the e.

  • @TilltheBill no, it isn't

  • @theCavemanDude Yes, it is. This phonological phenomenon is called "Auslautverhärtung" or terminal devoicing.

  • @MrPopupcamper

Because he actually knows how to speak german.

  • The socks wouldn't actually be that bad if they weren't so sheer.

  • If Stephen Fry says you have a toilet ghost, you have a toilet ghost, you just can't see it, like most other ghosts. :-)

  • Schnitzel with noodles. Couldn't the noodles be spatzle?

  • Best line up: Alan davies, Sean Lock, Bill Bailey and Phil Jupitus.

  • I am german. In England talking about Germans and Germany always leads to Hitler and Nazi-Stuff. Sad to see that...more then sixty years after the war.

The English are resting in the past. Sad to see that, too.

  • @Eyyoh77

Well lets face it 50 million dead you can't really brush it under the carpet. Also godwins law applies in real life

  • @jiltedkiller No one tries to brush something under a carpet, but the nazis are not similar with us Germans nowadays. Not all Germans were Nazis and not all Nazis were Germans.

The war is long ago...and I´m very happy that England has won it! The idea that Hitler would rule Europe is absolutely horrible even for us Germans, too. Btw, what is godwins law?

  • @Eyyoh77

    Godwin's law: 29:15

  • @Eyyoh77

Well the majority of the nazis were germans so you could basicly say "all" nazis were germans. And the war is long ago? 1938-1945 isn't that long ago if you ask me.

  • @501028 That´s what they told you in school. Dutch children learn to know the German history from 1933-1945,only.For them there was nothing before and nothing after...

German pupils learn more about the Netherlands in history lessons.

By the way we beat you during the soccer-european-championship...once again!:-)))))))

  • @Eyyoh77

We learn more about the germans but you know, 60 million kills, that's the stuff that sticks with you the most. I'm still wondering how you would know that we only learn about the second world war (which is not true).

  • @501028 You are right! Hitler´s war was a horrible crime. 60 million dead people are 60 million too much! I´m very sorry what happened to your country during the Nazi-occupation. For me, born 1966( The year when Prince Claus married your later Queen Beatrix) it is also unbelievable that something like the war and the holocaust could ever happen. But it´s a fact! Our generation has a great and special resonsebility in order to avoid something similar. Therefore we got the EU nowadays.

  • @501028 It is long enough for a generation of bright talented germans to show people with such short sighted vison that gremany is a wonderful country. <3 Germany from britain.

  • @Eyyoh77

Godwins law is that the longer an argument lasts, the probability of someone mentioning the Nazis or Hitler increases. I think theres another part where whoever mentions it first has hence lost the argument but not sure on the last bit

  • @HauptmannRob Thank you! Btw Hitler, Hitler, Hitler...Rofl :-D

  • @Eyyoh77 Godwins law states that any discussion on the internet, no matter the subject, will eventually conclude with a reference to the second world war and nazism, thus shutting down the discussion.

  • @FluffyPinkPony Now I know! Thank you!

  • @Eyyoh77 It's explained in the show, were you not watching?

  • @Eyyoh77 As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1."[2][3] In other words, Godwin observed that, given enough time, in any online discussion—regardless of topic or scope—someone inevitably criticizes some point made in the discussion by comparing it to beliefs held by Hitler and the Nazis.

  • @Eyyoh77 I see they've already explained Godwin's Law, but I thought I'd mention that it's also called "Argumentum ad Hitlerum" and can be considered a logical fallacy (e.g. Hitler liked dogs, therefore dogs are evil, and so on).

The trouble with Godwin's law is that because the Nazis were such a great example of the state run amok, and too many people conflate a useful reference to the perils of national socialism with the logical fallacy.

  • Godwin's Law of Internet Debates is this: the longer any online discussion goes on, the odds of someone comparing or making reference to Hitler and the Nazis approaches 1:1, at which point the thread just devolves into "flaming" and should be henceforth abandoned.

  • @Eyyoh77 I don't think most Europeans think "Nazi" when they hear "German" anymore.

Right now they properly think "spending a lot of money on Greece (and others)".

We of cause shouldn't forget what happened in ww1&ww2 (kinda related, i doubt the 2nd would have happened if the ww1 surrender terms had been different, but that is another discussion), and make sure nothing like it happens again, but it makes no sense to have any recent of current living Germans because of it.

  • @tfwarlord I hear Germany and I think of David Hasselhoff.

  • @Eyyoh77 This is a comedy show breh

  • @Eyyoh77 in every internet discussion, the longer it goes on, the probability of nazis being mentioned approaches 1

  • @Eyyoh77 My Granddad who fought in the second world war is still alive. I don't hold a grudge against modern Germans / Germany but please don't imply that it's somehow a criticism of the English just because we intentionally avoid discussing it.

  • @ukulazy * don't avoid discussing it

  • @ukulazy Don´t mention the war!

  • What is Alan's buzzer?
