I hiked through Spain this fall and ran into a German couple at a little cafe in the middle of nowhere. They left before I did (hopefully not as a result of anything I said) and when I left, I got about half a kilometre away when I saw the man hiking back towards the cafe. He explained that he forgot to pay for his coffee. I thought this was impressive. Especially when I walked another 1.5 kilometres and saw his wife sitting on the side of the trail minding the bags.
I think you have good perspective. Most people would have owned it up to good karma, "Oh, free tea! Lucky me!" without considering at all the people who made the tea or the company (hopefully it was small business and not Starbucks) not that I don't like Starbucks, I just feel that they make so much money anyway, 2.50 can't hurt. If we were all honest individuals it would not be extraordinary to go back and pay. But unfortunately (or fortunately) we're all self-interested.
My first reaction was "Oh he has hair!" my second one was "Oh he looks nicer this way" :D
