Are civil / equal rights separate to marriage? For me, the focus should be less about marriage and more about equality and legal rights for same sex couples, maybe calling it something totally separate, such as a civil partnership or civil union, and granting same sex couples all the same rights on a state and federal level as a same-sex couple when they get married? Are civil / equal rights separate to marriage? For me, the focus should be less about marriage and more about equality and legal rights for same sex couples, maybe calling it something totally separate, such as a civil partnership or civil union, and granting same sex couples all the same rights on a state and federal level as a same-sex couple when they get married? Just a thought and Im sure this is an entirely different argument in itself.

Ref 71 is for Washington State so it would still not be equal, as you would not have federal benefts and that's my point! Full Equality (state and federal) vs Marriage. I'm all for both - however what is more likely to pass so we have full rights, as granted to opposite sex couples when they get married? I personally can see civil unions passing federally sooner than DOMA overturned or full marriage equality. I'm for marriage equality though its not really equal if its not recognised by the fed.

Bearslut, the purpose of this legislation is to separate religion from civil marriages, allowing religious institutions to opt-out of performing civil marriages, it is not being forced upon them if it is against their belief and if the bill passes. The name given to this bill is misleading and confusing to say the least! My argument is ANY religion should not play a part or act as a blockage in extending civil / equal rights to minority groups and this crazy ladies argument is doing just that.
