  • I only came here because I thought it was a Tori cover... But this is great :) I may to try out some of her stuff. Love her voice :)

  • she's a great songwriter. reminds me of neil hannon and rufus wainwright in a way

  • God. I'm a guy but I gotta say she wears beautiful dresses.

  • Love it!!

  • Wow! I wish youtube still had stars instead of thumbs up or down so that I could give this five stars. Unreleased? Kinda like "some of the girls are shy and don't want to be on the album" by that other musician who also has a song called "Parasol"??!! Too wonderful to have gone unreleased. Thank you, alanisfan2002, for posting.

  • @MademoiselleSwann Check out the album "The Baroness Redecorates", an EP she released the same year as "The Baroness"

  • @Realfucksake Thank you! Happy Holidays to you!

  • This song makes me think of Emilie Autumn's style lol Love it!

  • sarah needs to get featured on so you think you can dance... the choreographers would love her voice and that habanera rhythm of this song!!

  • She kind of sounds like a young Tori Amos.

  • She kind of sounds like a young Tori Amos.

  • Amazing voice.

  • I ADORE this song. oh so much. <333

  • It's about how Paris sucks and how stuffy and stuck-up the people are there. XD

As I said it's much better live, she really has a mocking tone when it's done live.

  • what a stupid guy u are, i v been there and the only thing i want now is leaving there, stop beeing in the anti french mood lol just because u r jealous of them

  • First of all I'm a girl, and at least I can put forth enough thought to properly spell and capitalize my words. I didn't say I thought Paris sucked or that's not how I meant to come off. It's about how Sarah thought Paris was horrid in many ways.

As well just because I hate something doesn't mean I'm automatically jealous of it. Who taught you that, your mother? Think for yourself.

  • Does anyone know if this song is about Virginia Wolf? I think so, given the lyrics...

  • @christophebanach No, she said Virginia is a good name for someone pure/reborn.

  • This is one of my favourite Slean tracks, it makes me giggle when she says "And I chased it with a monkey wrench cursing in my broken french." LOVE IT! She performed this live and it was fantastical and whimsical. How does she come up with such lyrics? A true artist in every sense of the word.

I had the opportunity to meet her and she is so petite and adorable, you feel enlightened and inspired after speaking with her.

  • @vanillamari You got all that out of meeting her? I would have just had a boner.

  • Wow, this was actually recorded as a single

    I saw her perform it a while back.. she said at the time that it was a new song, and so I waited to hear it on the Baroness and it wasn't there ;__;

Then at a concert two day ago I heard her play it again & decided to look up the lyrics and find this!

It doesnt sound half as good here as it does live. Then again, Sarah Slean is always more mindblowing in person. The extent to which she can manipulate her voice just can't be caught in full on tape!

  • Świetne...Nigdy tego nie słyszałam, ale melodia jest cudna...A jej głos..ummm, miód!

  • Beautiful.

  • This song is just FABULOUS. Thanks to CBC for giving it the play so I could get to know her music and tell others.

  • This where I heard her as well! Yeah CBC! :D

  • her best song yet !

  • I love this song so much.

  • I am so greatful to you, fellow Slean fans!

For uploading videos and sharing information. People as talented and original as she need the patronship.

  • Glorious.

  • A Kate Bush for this generation . . . I wonder if she spends a lot of time with Rufus Wainwright : )

  • is begging for those of like mind-if such a poor soul exists...

  • Ms Slean has a goth stuff going on for sure... She has such an amazing voice and full of emotion, not to mention her playing skills... Parasol is one of my favs because of the cabaret mood...

  • Ahhh, my favourite song of hers. I am so excited for the new EP! I signed onto itunes this evening, searching for Parasol (as I do most weeks) not expecting to find anything, when BAM. New EP.

    Booked. Buying this asap. Gorgeous.

  • WOW! great song! heard it this morning on CBC radio 2 and loved it.

  • ME TOOO! It 's terrific!

  • Same!

  • this is such a fantastic song! I woke up to it this morning and was like - I NEED TO GET THAT!

It reminds me of a victorian, Tim Burton, gothic musical, old fashioned film thing... Her voice is fantastic!

    Does that make sense?

  • Tim Burton is exactly what I said!

    Definately.

  • I loved when she played this live...so excited it's going to be on an album soon.

  • So excited for the EP! Finally, I can have this song wherever I go.

  • Ha, I love it. I love this song. I love Sarah Slean!!! Sweet. Cool. I'm going to play this a hundred time tonight or today.

  • its amazing.

    deal with it.

  • anyone know if the mp3 is still available for download anywhere?? I need this on my iPod!

  • please les agradeceria bastante que carguen el video de la cancion THE SCORE de sarah slean, la verdad es que esa cancion me encanta... graciass :)

  • thisis about her first few months in Paris and how afraid she was, she was intimidated by how the people of Paris acted...but she said in about 6 months she started actign like them lol

  • Its a poem

poems don't have to make sense.

    It's telling a story

don't you know the story if you don't your not smart enough.

  • She's Happly insain and if you could see this our where the same way I'm sure you would understand better

  • These lyrics make no sense.

  • Its a poem

poems don't have to make sense.

    It's telling a story

don't you know the story if you don't your not smart enough.

  • I enjoy the song even though it doesn't make complete sense to me. But that's ridiculous to say that if someone doesn't know or understand the story that they're "not smart enough".

    By the way - that's spelled "you're" ;).

  • oh contrary. They make clear sense. It's just not told in the clearest way.

  • "Its a poem

poems don't have to make sense. "

Any great poet that has ever existed would cringe upon hearing such a statement. And I didn't even point out that your first statement completely contradicts your second statement, making your last assertion incredibly comical.

  • Actually I think the song makes complete sense. To me it's about her time in Paris and what, as an artist, she felt she was "forced" to play by her label. That's just my opinion :)

  • A matter of opinion, I think. :)

  • I am KICKING myself for not pre-ordering the cd now, argh. Though I think I still liked this better live, better when you can see and I think she played it up a bit more then.

  • I saw Sarah Slean on june 28th 2008 at the Club Soda in Montreal for the Jazz Festival. I absolutely agree, she is Fantastic, Charismatic, Mysteriously Hilarious, Beautiful on her piano. My boyfriend has her last three cds, and I discovered a new sound with dark comical tones.

En plus de plusieurs merci Montreal je vous aimes, elle mérite au-de-là des mains qui frappent, mais plus qu'un trophé de prestence. WOW!

  • yeah, that's the sarah i love. fun and crazy cabaret. this tango is perfect and i can imagine her dancing in the video. i'm not really into her last album though. really too 'mainstream'. she says she composed it in paris, a bit depressed.i'm sure she composed parasol while on vacation somewhere in spain!

  • What a talent! I'm happy that she finally 'made it'! Now, to get the world to listen.....

  • pure genius. i love cabaret music so much when it's innovative.

  • i saw her supporting ron sexsmith in 2004 and it took a while for her music to win me i love the rhyme of virginia with inya

  • i freakin' love sarah. i find it crazy to think of the possibilities of the meaning or story behind this song because the lyrics sound so absurd.

  • She is MUCH better live! I absolutely adore her!

  • Is it possible to be better than this recording ?!?!

  • Oh yes! You must see her live it is absolutely amazing!

  • She's absolutly amazing live. I can't wait to see her again!

  • I've listened to this song for the past 8 hours. It's a constant loop.... I love it.

  • Haha, i did that last weekend, it's just fun to listen to and it just gets better the more i listen to it

  • Whoever said it's even better live is right. Her voice has a real heft and presence that resonates throughout a whole room. It's not really something that can be reproduced in a studio, I suppose. Not that I'm complaining, this is great too. I really appreciate the nuance she imbues into her performance style. She can belt out a good rasp, or produce a dulcet vibrato. It's a nice change from the wrecking ball vocals and endless melismas that prove that many singers have pitch and ego issues.

  • can i have this song? I heard it live lat month and I have all her cds but i didn't get it online. can you give me this song?

  • she's releasing it in December. you can get it on her website

  • hee hee she played and sang this for us when she came to our campus pub it was awesome

  • I love this song, but honestly it's way better live, her voice just pierces through and the way she sings the song is golden. It's kind of toned down here.

  • I love this song, but honestly it's way better live, her voice just pierces through and the way she sings the song is golden. It's kind of toned down here.

  • i love it :)

    so funn to listen to

  • i know with fun songs like this she stands out miles from the crowd ')

  • i agree. she needs more songs like this, they are always her best.

  • Man, why can't the rest of The Baroness sound more like this song? This is the Sarah Slean I love, and she's hard to find on the actual album.

  • I don't know if I'm correct with this but isn't this her first record made under Warner Music? Maybe they're trying to make her more "mainstream"?

  • Nope, Night Bugs and Day One were with these folks too.

I hear they actually significantly influenced Day One's sound . . . but I liked the results so I'm not going to complain. ;)

  • loooooove this song. should be on the cd. there's not enough cabaret on it.

  • Favourite and 5 stars!

  • I am very surprised and sad that this track is not on Ms Slean's upcoming album! Regardless, it is one of my favourite new songs by the Baroness both live and recorded!

  • My quick take on the chords.... enjoy! Sarah's awesome.

F (Long necked...) C add flat 9th (flies in her..) C7 (they crowd...) fm (grand...) Ab (watching the mansion) C (burn)

    x2

    Bbm add e (oh it's not....) fm (a day on...)Db (I'm courting...) C7 (explain)

Bbm (oh virginia) fm C (we didn't know you)fm (had it in ya') Bbm (oh) C (sweet) fm (virginia) end on F, C in bass

  • oops... that would be C, F in the bass. Sorry!

  • Two weeks!!!

We have to wait two weeks and we'll be able to finally hear The Baroness!!!

  • I know!!!!! It sucks that I can't go to the premier show, and it sucks that this hasn't leaked online, because this she is amazing!!!

  • i fucking love this song
