  • It works by condensing the hot air from the flame inside the cylinder which causes the vacuum

  • I was wondering if you could use the coil from a heat gun to power that thing?

  • @Matthewsamagnet

I don't think it would. from what I am seeing it uses the flame to eat the air out of the cylinder.

  • how do you build engines like these? do you have a special machine that cuts the metal for you?

  • Bolt two of 'em together, and you've got the makings of a miniature Subaru in the making!

  • how to adjust speed

  • it's liek a subaru engine except it needs two more cylinders to make a four cylinder boxer just a subaru imprza motor..

  • is this scotch yoke? a typical boxer is a benz, and there is also the insanity that subaru built (5 main bearings for four cylinders) The video above as 4 cyls, also is 3 main bearings...I am pretty sure it is a scotch yoke.

  • Did you say "all it needs now is a bit more BLING adding.." Hehehe. Funny to hear someone outside the U.S. using that phrase. ;) Excellent work!

  • ha, it sounds like my old bug

  • VEry beautiful! With two cylinders running side by side and cycling 180 degrees out of phase with each other, they should be able to feed on the same flame without interfering. ;D

  • It´s so beautifully made...hats off to you.

  • An opposed engine has pistons that face eachother. One plug, or other ignition source per pair of pistons, and two geared crankshafts.

A boxer is the other way around having only one crank, and two pistons..

This isn't a boxer. But it's not an opposed either. This is whats called a "180 degree V-twin". Quite the mouthful. Google it. I assure you I've done my homework.

  • opposed engine IS boxer

  • when ferdinand porsche first built his flat for it was known world wide as a horizontally opposed engine. and everyone since has been know as the same! the pistons are opposed to each other. the engine you are describing is called a common knocker! sharing a common combustion chamber!

  • dosent a boxer run with each piston on it's own crank?

  • ehh kinda....same crank just different journals for each pictons cause the pistons arent straight up front to back like that....there offset a little bit

  • Yes..this is not a boxer....it's just opposed.

  • Well its just not necesary to have a crank, with different journals in this case.

Hes kinda mixed a boxer with like a V-twin design.

    Still interesting to see :)

  • I tried the side by side configuration just as you suggested but with two burners. It ran, but the flames kept getting blown out by the opposite exhaust, that is the reason I went for this design.

Just to say to others, I don't sell my proto engines. But I could make you one, $25 per hour @ say 60 hours for a basic one, 150 hours for a more complicated offering. Cash up front.

  • have you tried running the cylinders from one flame? so it gets sucked from side to side? (cylinders on one side and ports facing each other?

  • the exhaust from the other cylinder will blow it out

  • where can you get these im an automotive tech for a collage i dont want to disclose to protect the relitivity wehre i live but i am in the market for primitive and unique engine designs to teach my students. is it possible you would part with that engine of yours i i paid you for it? I can bet you all the gold in the world that my class would go nuts to see something like this. i know i did

    please respond.

    mr. dantaine.

  • Looks great! If you will make one with two crank throws, ideally set at 90 degrees, you will not believe how much more power it will have. I don't have room to explain why here, but it will amaze you.

  • advertising your site here cus you cant afford better means?

  • Not horses, fleas. It has just enough power to keep itself running. If the cylinder get dirty, even a little bit, the friction stops it starting. It was for that reason they were not used much commercially. eg. One big engine to drive a couple of sewing machines.

  • How much horses do ya think it's got? lol

  • pregunto cuanto consume de combustible en una hora , porque se podria usar como ventilador

  • good stuff mate

  • can and where canu order pre machinedflame gulpers

  • I have seen them on ebay, do a search for flame gulper, flame licker or vacuum engine.

    You might find one.

  • Bravo!!!

    superbe moteur top!

  • this is a 180 degree V motor, not a boxer

  • since when has a v been 180 flat u retard go back to school, dam theres one born every minite!!!

  • fool

  • you spelled damn wrong

  • @knak123

then what is the definition of a boxer according to you?

  • I suppose this could also be called a flat twin. Usually a boxer has seperate crankpins and offset cylinders.

I have used a common crankpin, but have lined up the cylinders by putting a bend in one of the conrods.

Boxer refers to the opposition of cylinders, as two boxers face each other in a boxing match.

  • Nice 2 cylinder design! I wish I had a metal shop to play around in.

  • Beautiful machine work, fantastic look, (young machinist) great work i also look at your other stuff, you do great work

  • can a car run on this kinds of engin?

  • are you seriuosly serios? a naked flame beeing sucked in to a engine,

your be better of asking a insurer or the police to let you drive a jet car on the road!!

  • Do the flames take place of the spark plugs that would be on a car engine?

  • No, a part of the flame is sucked into the cylinder, then the cylinder is sealed. The flame cools down and causes a vacuum in the cylinder. This then pulls the piston towards the head, rather than in a combustion engine where the ignited gases force the cylinder away from the head.

  • i like the pooping noise its very cute

i ve been looking at your vids and the are very interesting

  • that configuration can also be called horizontally opposed

  • flat opposed horizontally opposed boxer, have ir as you like.

  • and that in english!!

  • aww hell...

  • that configuration of the cylinders is known as V 180°, in a boxer the cylinders have another crankshaft distribution.

(esa configuracion de los cilindros es conocida como V 180°, en un boxer los cilindros se mueven de diferente manera por como estan acoplados al cigueñanl.)

    besides is an amazing job!

    Juan.

  • i think you do great work with pneumatic engines. i have made one myself, its a bit simple, but it works well. keep up the good work

  • Thanks for your comments.

I just design and make what takes my fancy at the time. I am making up a collection of all types for displaying at steam rallies.

There is no need to criticise your own work, if you have made it yourself, and it works, be proud of it. Many just won't even try.

  • About how much torque can it produce?

  • Just a little more than to keep itself running. There isn't enough power to keep running if one of the flames goes out.

  • Could you do Three?

  • I am looking to do a four very soon

  • NICE!

  • Very Nice! Are there plans available anywhere?

  • Do a search for Jan Ridders, it should take you to his site.
