Ian Hunter ""I originally wrote 'Cleveland Rocks' for Cleveland. I changed it later to 'England Rocks' because I thought it should be a single somewhere and Columbia wouldn't release it as a single in the U.S. (too regional). 'Cleveland Rocks' is Cleveland's song and that's the truth."
@MrPatrickcapone Joe Elliott disagrees and he being a close friend of Ian Hunter, I would take his word over a quote on a website like Wikipedia any-time. Also on Wiki (Overnight Angels) is this: The song "England Rocks" (originally a non-album B-side) would become one of his best-known songs, retitled "Cleveland Rocks" on Hunter's next tour, and re-recorded with the new title for his next album. Why Americans HAVE to lay claim to this song eludes me. What difference does it make either way?
Anyone who would like to see recently rediscovered footage of Down n Outz guitarist, Paul Guerin, in action with his former band, Red Dogs, do a search for 'Red Dogs Working Late' (to see the video) or 'Red Dogs Super Channel' (to see live tracks and a wee interview with Paul and the vocalist, Mickey).
This song just showed why ENGLAND does NOT Rock. Don't get me wrong some of the best bands ever came from England, Queen for instance, This is just such a corny song with an even cornier video. Woooow...
Americans "invented" rock so it would make sense why the rock singers sing like Americans. Also if England rocks so much why don't they fly the English flag instead of the union flag
If your just gonna complain, then go away. Joe Elliott rocks, and so does Leppard. It's not fake American. Have you noticed thats how all the British people sing? Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, even sometimes Paul McCartney. It's not an act, it's how they sing. Know your facts before you insult people.
@davthor It's also ironic that one of Def Leppard's first singles was titled "Hello America"...I voiced this critique before also on Korn's channel but I guess it's fair to say that Down N' Outz must share this video through their own channel and not through the one where I subscribed to keep myself up to date on Def Leppard and I'm saying this despite the fact that I enjoyed this video with cameos with May and Cooper. I knew this song as Cleveland Rocks though because of Drew Carey ;^)
England does rock...all my heroes are from there, Clapton DEF LEPPARD, Led Zepplin David Bowie Queen Cream Derek and the DOminoes, The Who, The Stones and lots more
@dlilgeneral On Remembrance Day here in the UK any direct member of family of a deceased person who has been awarded medals can wear them as a mark of respect and remembrance of their relatives bravery and courage. The US military wings are awarded for completion of training and therefore totally different to medals.
It's not a paradody - it's the original song (written by Ian Hunter of MTH fame) and performed by Joe and some Leps. Hunter had problems with his record label and for contractual reasons re-recorded 'England Rocks' as 'Cleveland Rocks' . The song got picked up by Drew Carey show, and performed by Presidents of USA or somesuch band -hence the offshoot song is MUCH better known than the original. And although NOT on youtube - the original version as sung by a younger Hunter is amazing!
@redcoat43 Joe is the only Leppard in Down N Outz. Rick Savage played a live show with them, but yeah. I think the rest are other former Mott The Hoople members. (Although I don't follow them, I just want to see Joe get back to being committed to Def Leppard stuff)
The song was originally written as Cleveland Rocks (Ian Hunter is from Cleveland) but no would release it in the US. So he changed it to England Rocks and released it in the UK.
... England Rocks: 1977 .. Cleveland Rocks: 1979 .. why would Ian write a song with one of the opening lines of "Back where I came from" about Cleveland considering he was born in Shropshire, England? You may well be right but it doesn't make sense. I know one of his daughters so when I next speak to her, I'll see if she knows the answer.

Excellent version of the song Cleveland Rocks by Ian Hunter, It's GREAT to see; Ian Hunter; His daughter Traci; Ron & Russell Mael of SPARKS; Gene Simmons; Mick Ralphs;Brian May & the King ALICE COOPER in this video.
it's the band formed to play at the Mott The Hoople Reunion on october 2009 at Hammersmith Odeon.
The set list included songs of the Mott The Hoople' members after the band had splitted. So they played Ian Hunter songs, Mott songs, British Lions songs.
It was a kind of tribute to the "post MTH" projects.
Re: "I fear this is the beginning of the end for the Leps".
Dramatic much? No band ever really splits up when there's coin to be made from a multitude of reunion tours. Not that the Lepps are going anywhere, you understand.
The more I play this album the more I love it! My favourite pre-July 13th was Career, now it's 3000 Miles From Here all the way - OMG, what a vocal!!!
its funny that Gene Simmons would say 'England Rocks', when KISS recorded a song called rock in the USA that basically says; they're happiest when they play in good old america!
and wasn't Alice Cooper banned from playing in England?
Jeezy-creezy, don't you think they've earned it? I thought it was tremendous! Tasty cameos. I thoroughly get why he's doing this. If I could get all the non-single song of my favourite bands out of the public, I'd do it in a heartbeat!
I am a French Canadian and I do not know Quireboys and Mott the Hoople. This album is worth it, the voice of Joe took the youth (finally!) It explodes on this album is especially good time as the epoch of Pyromania, I hope he will sing as that on the next Def Leppard!
I'm thinking that by now, most people will have had a chance to become familiar with 'My Regeneration'. Classic Rock mag may have its faults - but giving away this cd is inspired. What's the consensus then? Better than the originals or does anyone feel let down? What about those who've never heard the material before? Impressed? For me it's bringing back a load of happy mid70s memories. REALLY looking forward to the High Voltage gig and the (possible) support slot to Thin Lizzy in Dublin.
Checkout our cover of Def Leppards classic "Photograph" which also features footage from when we supported BON JOVI at the O2 ARENA on the 13th June. FREE MP3 of the cover too!!
England's pitful showing in the World Cup has probably killed this fine tune stone dead. Another 'what could've been..' I'm afraid. Could have been massive if Talk Radio or 5 Live or Sky Sports had adopted it. C'est la vie. Could have been worse. We could have been French.
What next off the cd then? I'm thinkin' there could be marvellous vids made for 'Storm' or 'One More Chance To Run'. Or 'Overnight Angels'. Yeah.... there could be a fantastic video made for 'Overnight Angels'.....
This song rocks! Joe and the Quireboys rock. I am definately in the mood for some new DL but this is good. Joe is getting back down to his roots. This is the kind of stuff that DL has gotten their influences from. Rock on boys! XOXO Kathy
Great tune, Joe definately rocks! The side projects that the DL boys are involved in just make them a stronger unit as far as DL is concerned. England Rocks is a perfect example. It's what they grew up with and had a big influence on what DL is. I have had the pleasure of seeing DL with Ian Hunter last summer. Cool man. Thanks for sharing some of your influences with us Joe! XOXO Kathy
everything sounds good when Joe is in! Previously i said cool song, now i'm saying this song rocks, this song rocks! Can't wait to see him again in Bulgaria one day again, as well as all the Defs ! Love 'em all
Elliott, even though I have traveled abroad, been at airports, hotels, studied English; namely, I've done EVERYTHING in order to meet you and I haven't been able to.... I still think you are the best !
Hope I will get to meet you one day down the road, one day before I die.
Elliott, even though I have traveled abroad, been at airports, studied English, hotels, EVERYTHING, etc, etc in order to meet you and I haven't been able to.... I still think you are the best !
Hope I will get to meet you one day down the road, one day before I die.
Pure class! Can't wait for the album (and the DVD) - I was raised on a diet of Mott the Hoople and Def Leppard so this combination cannot loose in my book - like 2 great bands on 1 CD. Joe's laid off the pork pies for a few months and looks good too in this too (I was at the after show for the Mott the Hoople 'Saturday Gig'). Else it would have to be 'England Porks'. I was as also at the Down'n'Outz first performace - what a show. Up the Down'n'Outz!
I think it's o.k. to take a break sometimes. It's like being married for 25 years...you need something spicy to keep your love life interesting after being together for that long!
We need more British rock'n'roll in the charts again instead of the Yankee homeboy shit. I hope this goes to No.1 for 10 weeks - nice to see Sparks, Alice Cooper, KISS and Queen in the video as well. I'm envious of Joe having mates like them!!! :-D
The members of Def Leppard need these side projects because it brings them back to the band eventually. Look at all of the huge bands that do not have original members. Since Gene is in the video, let's start with KISS. Peter Criss wanted to do his own stuff and it didn't mess with Kiss. Eventually, they parted ways. David Lee Roth and Van Halen same thing. Def Leppard is smart enough to get it out of their system and then come back together.
What's England?

Self admission by Joe, an or Ian Hunter, to being a poser?
"I got some badges from World War II
I wear 'em just like my Granddad do
He was a villain and I am too"
Englanders think everything can be inherited like titles but bravery can't.
When I asked my Dad for his Airborne wings he told me to go earn my own, and I did.
Wearing medals that you didn't earn makes you a poser, even worse, A "Quasi" in military lingo.

@2abob 1. Charlie Webster 2. Her scenes, although not originally her, were always part of the video.

so what? is this like a Def Leppard break up or another side project? i'm confused?!?
good song though, but what is down and outz?
brendan007 1 year ago
@brendan007
it's the band formed to play at the Mott The Hoople Reunion on october 2009 at Hammersmith Odeon.

The musical style is a bit like Elton John's 70s
Find this album soon !!!!!!! I is exellent!
Sorry for my English

I'm thinking that by now, most people will have had a chance to become familiar with 'My Regeneration'. Classic Rock mag may have its faults - but giving away this cd is inspired. What's the consensus then? Better than the originals or does anyone feel let down? What about those who've never heard the material before? Impressed? For me it's bringing back a load of happy mid70s memories. REALLY looking forward to the High Voltage gig and the (possible) support slot to Thin Lizzy in Dublin.

XOXO Kathy
kathryn046 1 year ago
Great tune, Joe definately rocks! The side projects that the DL boys are involved in just make them a stronger unit as far as DL is concerned. England Rocks is a perfect example. It's what they grew up with and had a big influence on what DL is. I have had the pleasure of seeing DL with Ian Hunter last summer. Cool man. Thanks for sharing some of your influences with us Joe! XOXO Kathy

We need more British rock'n'roll in the charts again instead of the Yankee homeboy shit. I hope this goes to No.1 for 10 weeks - nice to see Sparks, Alice Cooper, KISS and Queen in the video as well. I'm envious of Joe having mates like them!!! :-D

Love it!!!!!
Erated78 1 year ago
The members of Def Leppard need these side projects because it brings them back to the band eventually. Look at all of the huge bands that do not have original members. Since Gene is in the video, let's start with KISS. Peter Criss wanted to do his own stuff and it didn't mess with Kiss. Eventually, they parted ways. David Lee Roth and Van Halen same thing. Def Leppard is smart enough to get it out of their system and then come back together.
