I played against the hustlers in the park for over 10 years. Some are actually pretty strong. Its a game of bluff and distraction with the help of verbal and clock intimidation. One thing this kind of chess will do for you is sharpen your focus and prepare you for what ever can be thrown at you.
This is just one of the many great things about the game, all the different ways to play it. I can't play speed Chess at all, it's like another game altogether. I'm just not comfortable with the level of error involved. It's pains me. I don't get the same feeling either, I like to absorb the game and make each move with as much precision as I can. It's good to see people playing it though.
@StevenHatzakis how do you count moves?? it is count as 1(white move) (black move)..2..3... 4... even alekhine said he can only calculate dozen of moves ahead..
@homieny Actually yes you can, when you play blitz games (or lightning in this case) you do not have to say check nor show that if they made an illegal move due to the speed of the game. If they forget to save their king it is free for you to take
I used to play over the board against a National Master, and he would play with One Minute on his clock, and give his opponents Five Minutes on theirs.. And he'd win every time.
As you get more experienced, you're able to recognize positional patterns and tactics quicker, because you've seen them before.
i call them "make-moves." I'm good at a time grind, when we are pretty much at a standoff, but they opponent is wasting time looking for the crushing move.
They key is that in a speed game your not supposed to THINK, your supposed to SEE (i.e. Visual thought process vs Auditory). Speed is good for tactics - but sure everyone hates a player that just moves peices for no reason -which can be typical when you have a few seconds left and dont want to lose on time. So its a paradox- but the key is to be visual adn look as many moves ahead, in all directions, all of the time.
Its a paradox.. in a 1-2 minute game you can easily play 40-70 moves which is just as much as a 1 hour game can go. Granted, in a longer game you get more time to think and can probably see deeper (10-20 moves) verse the speed chess were you can see 6-9 moves or more if your real good. .
a lot of the moves, 12 maybe up to 20, are all known moves, which you can bash out if good on theory. After that, my guess is that a lot of moves are intuitive, since you don't have the time for deep calculations.
I am not even an expert player and can see sometimes 8-10 moves ahead during a 1 minute game (during the middlegame)- like when you exchange 5-6 pieces consecutivley then know your next 2-3 options, it not that difficult. Experts and grandmasters can probably look 20-25 moves ahead with out too much thought but it depends on the person and his/her style.
20 to 25 moves ahead eh?While on one hand it is possible to look at the board and know what must or will, that is what is likely to happen as far as positioning trends and pawns marching to be queened etc,I would say its highly unlikely that anybody is seeing 20 to 25 moves ahead with any real clarity.
It takes skill. You have to instantly spot the tactics and address as needed. There is some differential between good players and good lightning players, but generally one goes with the other.
Most arguments are stage to rattle you if your winning for example then hustler your playing will violnetly start an argument with another hustler watching the game to rattle you but they're both in on it.
If you hear a loud fire cracker like noise thats GUN FIRE!!! Ff you hear that and see nobody fall or run stay put and continue playing if you someone fall or a crowd running run with the crowd if the crowd runs right you run right if the crowd runs left you run left. Trust me on this. Just like the Flamingos when the wolf comes the whole flock doesn't see the wolf but know the flamingos closet too it does and they know they'll run in the opposite so just follow.
99% of the time your back will be to the crowd suspicious characters will be watching you so have a friend to watch your back. If an argument breaks out at a table near you don't say anything or even look over. Don't stare at anyone. Concentrate on the game.
If you ever go there watch your back if you lose pay under the table not over the cops might see you and arrest you for gambling. Have a set amount you plan on losing so you don't have expose money.
THe guy on the left is none other than Gerald Times one of fastes speed chess player in NYC.
I played once his speed of played is intimidating I got good position but the guy is just to fast. They play in Washington square Park. When I played him I was nervous because there are Drug dealers all around offering you "Smoke" in low tones. If your new there you'll notice guys sitting on a bench not to far from you watching you sizing you up not play but to rob you.
2 minute blitz just encourages people to be tactical junkies. They end up being postional cripples, having very little understanding of pawn structures.
If you want those juniors to do well in real tournaments then keep them away from 2 minute blitz.
@mooneepondskid This comment should have at least 20 thumbs up next to it. I play with someone in particular who plays this kind of tournament blitz style and as a result I have a decisive advantage in games with normal time controls. His game revolves around springing a trap on me that I haven't seen before and hoping I don't find the correct defense (which almost always leads to a big advantage for me), rather than even making the slightest attempt to outplay me positionally (real chess).
@mooneepondskid Oh, and this rival of mine considers two minutes slow chess, really he does. He thinks a "normal" time control is one minute, below that is blitz. What I don't understand is how anybody can enjoy that, as it takes the beauty of chess and throws it out the window. With the traps, it's ridiculous - one should play the board, not the man - Fischer, in other words you should assume the best defense and find the best moves, which does in fact require time to think.
Omg!!

you never have to say check and in blitz illegal move is an automatic loss assuming your opponent notices it

@homieny it's speed chess (with a timer) in speed chess you dont say check.

you never have to
