What's so weird about that? You're throwing, while holding the yarn continental. That's how every English knitter purls, except with the yarn in the other hand.
I just could not purl that slowly and awkwardly, no offense. I do the Portuguese style of purling if it's a purl only project. Otherwise, for knitting and purling a project, I use the Eastern European style. I taught myself to knit in 7 days back in July this year and can speed through scarves and hats pretty well. I just kept learning different knitting styles until I found one that was fast and efficient enough for my short attention span. :-)
your video is one of the most helpful videos on how to purl! Just hearing you say that you hold the string of yarn down with your thumb makes this the most helpful video on purling i've watched thus far. Good piece of advice ;)
Well, the stitches turn out ok because in fact the yarn is going in the right places. However, the tension is really skewed because the yarn is not allowed to slip through your fingers and is instead grabbed and wrapped. You are only half way to mastering the continental method. There is no question that you are knitting, but you are surrendering speed and ease because you have not yet got the yarn in your hands in the most efficient way. A little research and you will have much more fun.
When I first taught myself to knit I dropped the yarn after every stitch. That is what it appears you are doing as well. The continental method works best for my brain, but we are all different. If you find a method that keeps you from dropping the yarn you may find your knitting loosens up a bit.
Whoa--I'm with harbleblaster. inefficient. If you learn how to continental knit/purl you'll find that tension problem will go away and you'll be a much faster knitter. Check out lorilee Bultman's video on Continental knitting.
Looks very inefficient. I know there is no right or wrong and knitters don't like being told they are wrong but try - wrap the yarn round your left hand like this: With your palm facing you put your left pinky under the yarn then move your pinky over the yarn and then let it it rest under the fingers, lightly gripping with your ring finger. Move your index finger under the yarn so that the yarn lies across the index finger just above the first knuckle and just under the nail. (more......)
(.....cont'd) Push the needle purl-wise through the first stitch and with the yarn on top the right needle use your index finger to pull downwards. You will feel/hear it click past the left needle and it is then safe. push the right needle away from you through the loop and then ease the stitch off the left needle.
I think you purl just fine

That is how I purl! I was just asked how I knit and this is the first video that shows my purling. I never have problems with my tension or time.

Have you ever heard of Portuguese knitting style? It's much easier and faster to do.

Holy cow! Thats how I purl!

I'd prefer to spend time putting the yarn down than picking up stitches I've dropped :) Thank you I tried this method and it worked well for me too.

I purl the same way too except I hold my yarn a little differently so that I don't have to pick it up and wrap it so much.

Instead of wrapping it around, just put it under the and pull it through, much faster, that is the way I do it.

That's exactly how I do it! How funny! And yes-Superorigamigirl, the stitches look just as good as anyone elses! Probably better than yours! Ha!
clmalloy 3 years ago
Unconventional purling, yeah. The stitches look totally the same, I just hold my yarn weird.
logicprevailed 3 years ago
Do you know what your doing???
superorigamigirl 3 years ago
Whoa! You're the only other person I've seen who purls like I do.
