One of the most amazing aircraft ever built. Right up there with the B52. Both will be in service till about 2050. Yes I said 2050. They keep upgrading the 52. On some of them they have changed so many pieces that very little of the original is left. Some of the 130s are the same.
This bird is amazing! It makes the "Shitter" helicopter look tiny, then again thats a helicopter and this is a plane, so of course its going to be giant.
Notice that it's a stretch model. Its about eleven feet longer than the normal C130. Also, those engines are restricted to 60% power roughly. Yep, at 100% they'd rip the wings off.
hmmm, thats different than the specs given to me directly from a Lockheed Flight member. Your right on the forward stretch, making it the same length as a L-100, minus creature comforts of the L-100, but many structural Improvements.... too many older C-130 Wings cracked, with several failures leading to crashes. I guess meeting the Lockheed people in person, allowed unfiltered information, unlike the politicians of the USAF.
I suppose... but you have to consider that Lockheed is selling a product. I think they have more to lose, thus they would tend to shy away from such issues. Filtered or not, I was talking to a propulsion specialist that works on the engines and often confers with a Rolls Royce rep. You're aware these utilize different engines right? AE2100D3 engines.
The Airbus version has 50%+ more capabilities than the C-130J. Stronger wings, much stronger engines, and can do more missions that the C-130J cant, in a similar sized Airframe. Unfortunately, the Aircraft Manufacture tells the USAF what it needs.. i.e. 767 Tanker that cant refuel a C5 in a single sortie. I guess Boeing was right, the 777 isn't what they need, even though it could do everything the USAF wanted it to do. Its plain and simple corruption. The DOD was furious.
@government28 True, in a sense. Yeah they operate at 100% rpm speeds constantly, but that's merely what they are programed to follow via the FADEC tolerances. You could in alter the speed and fuel flow to produce more power, but these engines HAD to be toned down so it would cause structural damage. Even so, these engines do create cracks in the nacelle since the AF didn't want to buy the AE2100d3 QEC...
C-17 is a GREAT acrft. It fills the void between the C-5 and the C-130
You CANNOT beat the C-130's. Any-place, any-time, any-weather.
On this vid I love that you can hear the F-15 jfs running and the starting of the eng's . The first time I heard this I thought that there was a fire, it sounds like a fire siren.
Longest mil production acft line = C-130 (1950's +) and F-15 (1968 +).
An H model can do this. We use to do this at a short runway and i was one of the crew. The C130 is the best aircraft, We go where no one goes and we deliver always
30% less climb rate on H models. I never liked the Paddle blades, and so many H models couldnt be stationed overseas due to tolerances. I remember Air Force Times where they called it Pork to upgrade to J models. Its a no brainer to me. I was in Bahrain when the First Model was doing its world tour in 1998. Little smoke, more power, more range quieter and less vibration... thumbs up for me.
Salute and 5/5 stars, I love the C-130. Everytime I see one, I think of my Daddy, who loved this aircraft - he passed away last year. 5/5 stars and an add to my Veterans playlist.
fantastic, I live by the 145th airlift wing and they fly Herks, and i love em! Beautiful birds with about every single letter of the alphabet in front of C.
What a quick landing!

@unambitious Low Speed Ground Idle and start up is the only time they're "restricted" to any thing less than 100%
