This movie was awesome. You felt the dizzying heights in the theaters. Great year for Stallone too business wise because later that year, Demolition Man came out. Which was awesome too.
NOBODY from the marketing department would dare to make a trailer like that nowadays. They need to explain everything, sometimes spoil everything, to add a crappy voice-over... There are sometimes efficient trailers like the Star Trek reboot or 2012 (both better than the movies...), but not as unique as that. The only two good trailers I've seen in a year are the Malick and TSN. It's sad. Long live Cliffhanger ! :)
We always forget about stuntmen, and how important they are for a good action movie. As others have said, these day more than half of the movie would be people jumping over a blue screen.
The music is a re-orchestrated version of the Dies Irae from the Requiem Mass in D minor by Mozart, VERY re-orchestrated. Don't expect any cymbals or bass drums. The very end, though, is the coda to "O Fortuna," from Carmina Burana by Carl Orff (a work which couldn't be more different from the Requiem, but it completely works in this trailer), which also sounds a bit re-orchestrated and different. They tailored the music to fit this preview specifically.
Who ever made this trailer knows how to ruin a good movie. I wouldnt of included any scenes with the helicopter OVER the edge and him fighting the bad guy. Also I would of left any scenes with money out. That was you really dont know the motive for all this craziness and third, they should of save the clip of the woman falling AT THE END. That was you really dont know who it is but you know theres crazy stuff going on up there.
@colliric Your were 9 when this came out. I was 13. I think that makes me more from this era than you. I also have over 800 movies. I would assume (since we like to assume) that having that many makes me qualified to say such a statement and if you don't agree, then i don't really care. Learn to respect peoples opinions. I think Die Hard was an excellent movie. Doesn't mean I have to love the trailer too - which I'm only mentioning Die Hard because you felt it needed comparison.
this trailer is in my top 10 favorite trailers, larger than life and very theatrical, i thought it was also Director-Renny Harlins better work. but i must be a trench coat and say that the audio is out of sync! @ 1min 22sec when you hear a double thump and symbol crash that is ment to be in time with Gabe (stallone) hitting the suit case with both hands twice ( 1min 27sec)
The Climbing scenes except for when Stallone's stunt double Wolfgang Gullich is on screen are pretty lame but I still love the hell out of the movie. Who but Stallone could ride an enemy down the side of an icy slope like a surf board, jump off and self arrest with his ice tool as his enemy sails over the edge of the cliff screaming like a baby? And impaling that other mercenary with a power lift into that Stalactite was pretty cool too.
Renny Harlin is one of the best action movie director ever... A sense of thrilling absolutely fantastic. Die Hard 2 and Long kiss goodnight are also masterpiece... I've seen it many times but the opening sequence of Cliffhanger is each time totally thrilling: you know what is gonna happen, but you still catch in the suspense !
MUITO BOM. GANHOU VARIOS PRÊMIOS TAMBEM E FICOU ENTRE OS MELHORES FILMES DAQUELE ANO! SE NÃO VIU VEJA É RECONMENDÁVEL E SE JÁ ASSISTIU ...BEM, VEJA ´NOVAMENTE . É MUITO MASSA!
@backwardsmarathon1 It's a fact that this was filmed mostly on location. Yes there were plenty of special effects shots, and green screen shots particularly whenever Sly was climbing a mountain face cuz he's terrified of heights. If you want to learn more about how the movie was made feel free to watch the special features disc.
@trwent I agree with you... a lot. :) The short haircut suits her very well, just like Demi Moore in Ghost (I think there is a connection, since there is only two years between the movies, and short-haired action heroins are in Hollywood). It's a shame she didn't do anything after that, I was 12 when the movie was released, and had a major crush on her...
My favorite movie, Sylvester <3
