How do you know this particular store's puppies came from a commercial breeder who actually mistreated dogs as you describe? Instead, it sounds like you're protesting what might be, not what is. Regardless, in my experience, most independant breeders, inexperienced and ill-informed, are often as bad or worse.
@stewartx5 We investigated them and have evidence. Becaue of the evidence, they closed for good. We took them to court. We worked wit hthe authorities.
Okay, a couple things wrong with this whole "protest". 1.) Did anyone bother to find out if /this/ pet store sold puppy mill dogs? There are quite a few pet stores who only sell pets from proper breeders and sometimes even help rescues. If this pet store did sell puppy mill dogs perhaps that evidence should have been shouted out instead of the over used propaganda you guys were shouting about. 2.) There is nothing wrong with breeders, when done right. A dog from a rescue often comes with (c)
a lot of baggage and that's nothing against the dog but a lot of people would like to be able to raise a dog from puppyhood. There are good breeders out there and to shun them because other horrible people go about things the wrong way is just pigheaded. 3.) You say the store closed on that day because they were scared. That's bull. They closed because you all were causing a ruckous. Not to say you don't have a right to, but imagine how terrified those poor animals would have been with you (c)
all yelling right outside. Also, who knows if one of you wouldn't have gone off and gone inside to stir up trouble. They were right to just close for the day and avoid the mess you all caused.
How about instead of harrassing pet stores you go to the source. Put the picket sign down and instead figure out a way to shut down the mills. Make the kind of scene you did here at your state's capitol building, bring it to the doorstep of these horrible mills.
By the way, I hope none of you shop at Petco or PetSmart. Both of those stores mistreat the small animals they sell and support "rescues" that have been proven to make money off of dogs they get from puppy mills that they buy and resell. You know, the kind of thing you guys are supposedly speaking out against.

@generationx1254: one simple answer is this, since the goal is to NOT do business with them and their cronies then they will do what any cruel business will do in "tough times": "DUMP" their inventory, read whatever you want or can handle into that reality. Only aggressive action and rescue will save those animals remaining in those hellish places of cruelty.
I've said my piece against animal cruelty, as far as the presence of certain celebrities in this "protest" video I continue to be unimpressed, they have been part of the problem too and easily go for "feel good" photo or in this case video-ops to increase their PR currency in the eyes of an adoring public. @friedie1jeff : I realise you ask an honest if naive question but the truth is "legitimate" breeders ARE part if not most of the problem that causes this cruelty to continue, the breeder industry on the whole is corrupt, greedy and apathetic to the lives they profit from, they spend millions of dollars to lobby local, state & federal representatives against reform. Few breeders are ethical, empathetic and kind in the pursuit of profit.

They are like a rescue, any money that comes in goes straight to the dogs. Also, most breeders breed for the betterment of the breed. Do some people do it wrong and just breed for profit? Yes, but those are not the people I'm talking about. I also don't mean this comment to refer to the breeders who have "messed up" the breed (GSDs, Bassets, to name a couple).

Although public awareness of such activities is a positive step in stopping them, they should then take the responsibility to make the public aware that, as you say, quite a few pet stores do use legitimate sources. Perhaps what is needed is a "seal of approval" by a reputable organization, of a pet store. The Humane Society or the ASPCA.

You need to visit those breeders to see the parents and living conditions. YOU CAN NEVER BE SURE 100% THAT A DOG DOESN'T COME FROM A PUPPY MILL IF U BUY FROM A PET STORE... because responsible breeders never sell to pet stores, and also the stores have a practice of faking the documents, pedigrees, and vet checks.
well, i own a puppy mill with my uncle so i know what happens in there. All we do is breed a dog untill it cant breed anymore and then we send it to a shelter or to someone that is looking for a dog. Our puppies are beautifull and healthy, there might be other Puppy Mills that mistreat dogs, but I'm positive our dogs aren't mistreated. I hope you learned a lesson out of this, not all Puppy Mills are bad.

i bought 2 dogs from a pet store and they had all kindes of problems one was really sick and had to be pute down :( and i was vary upset and now i have my chihuahua that lived and + it is vary expencive to take care of a sick dog so now i will get from a shelter
Petfinder is fantastic for finding a pet. I love these people for standing up against a greedy pet store! I am starting a few protests against pet store cruelty and think that more people need to take a stand and say something about the abuse!

No, you are not saving when you buy in a pet store, not at all. In fact, when you buy ANYTHING in a pet store that sells live animals, you are enriching the puppy mills. The animals should be given to rescue organizations to find loving homes. It's the pups' mothers that are suffering, not the pups.

Initially, yes, but the less we buy from them, the less demand, and therefore it starts to end the trend. If a person owning 100+ breeding dogs is selling HALF of what they bring out, then they will start to breed less dogs since they do not have the money. Which in turn, yes ends the life of the dogs there, but means there are less dogs being bred for this purpose.

I hate going to pet shops and seeing the terrible conditions in which they keep all the animals, especially the dogs and cats. And they always have this depressed and lethargic look on their faces, it's often brought me to tears. I wish I could just buy all of them and save them from their misery, but that would mean supporting the pet stores. The only answer is to force them to close.

i just got a puppy recently from an animal rescue and my mom was really mad cuz of what we had to buy for him so she gave it back. were we buying too much for the puppy cuz we spent over 1000 dollars for that puppy but it was really cute

If you want a specific type of dog go to a responsible breeder. what makes a respomsible breeder... one thing is that a responsible breeder would never sell their pups in a pet store!!!They want to know where their pup is going. Most have dozens of questons to ask you and will do screening. They only sell to approved buyers, not just any joe blow who has $700 (or whatever the costis) in his hot hand!
And on that topic, most responsible breeders sell pups at lower prices then most pet stores!

They would have killed her for Christmas. She's 2, gorgeous and was abandoned. Why was she going to die? Because of dummies who BUY dogs.

actually Koreagrrl, buying from breeders isnt always that great, even "responsible" ones. There are many purebreds in shelters. The more people who breed animals, the less shelter animals get adopted. Many end up getting euthanized just cuz they've been in the shelter too long :(

And we are changing laws, state by state and working on a federal law as well. Get involved, and yes, let's "be real." Do something, get off your chair and join us. If pet stores close, breeders will find another way to make money off the suffering of dogs. The Internet. Demand isn't growing at all. I didn't get her out to adopt her either, it was to save her life. We tried getting her adopted and she got very few calls because of the serious economic collapse right now. Not all breeders run puppymills- this is about shutting down puppy mills who don't care about the animals and their health or lineage. Reputable breeders do not breed dogs to make money- they breed dogs for the love of the breed. My cousin is a top notch German Shepherd breeder and never has more than one or two litters per year and only breeds her dogs with other top notch dogs that are healthy, good natured and genetically sound. Puppy mills don't care about the dogs- just the money

I have even more respect for Richard Belzer than I already had. It is great to hear that a prominent Hollywood figure doesn't buy from pet shops. Also, Baby has a book written about her by the lady holding her in the video! I am looking forward to picking up a copy of the book, titled 'A Rare Breed of Love'.

THIS IS SO AWESOME, EVERYONE WE NEED TO DO THIS NATIONWIDE, MEDIA BLITZ. SHOW THE WORLD THAT PUPPYMILLS NEED TO BE A THING OF THE PAST. The only way is to adopt/rescue DO NOT BUY! Everyone organize a protest at your local puppymill front.
This is awesome, indeed. There are groups across the country that protest at places like Petland. You can find their schedules and hear their stories on websites such as the Best Friends Network.
I am interested in doing protests for Petland stores in Columbus, Lancaster and Athens, Ohio. How long does it usually take to make these peoplestop selling puppies or shut down?
Sometimes it takes months or years, but sometimes they don't shut down. But what does happen is their bottom-dollar is impacted. The protests spread awareness about pet store puppies and that there are so many shelter pets needing good homes. Some stores have actually stopped selling and have begun hosting adoption groups instead! The Animal House in St. Petersburg, Florida is a prime example of that kind of victory.
I propose that instead of the defenseless dogs, all puppy mill operators should be beaten with a stick for such hellish atrocities. You people are just wonderful. Victiories like this give me a lot of hope. :)
Finaly people who understand // I mean when I go to the petstore and I see cute Kittens and puppies locked in glass cages or cages i can see them wanting to get out and go home so badly and I think that petstore should only be for pet food , pet acsessories and Fish and rotens because rotens are ment in cages when cats and dogs dont// I rescued both my cats from the local shelter / also I find that pet stores price there cats and dogs a amount that is unbelievable like i saw a kitten for 1000$

How do you know this particular store's puppies came from a commercial breeder who actually mistreated dogs as you describe? Instead, it sounds like you're protesting what might be, not what is. Regardless, in my experience, most independant breeders, inexperienced and ill-informed, are often as bad or worse.

Okay, a couple things wrong with this whole "protest". 1.) Did anyone bother to find out if /this/ pet store sold puppy mill dogs? There are quite a few pet stores who only sell pets from proper breeders and sometimes even help rescues. If this pet store did sell puppy mill dogs perhaps that evidence should have been shouted out instead of the over used propaganda you guys were shouting about. 2.) There are good breeders out there and to shun them because other horrible people go about things the wrong way is just pigheaded. 3.) You say the store closed on that day because they were scared. How about instead of harrassing pet stores you go to the source. Put the picket sign down and instead figure out a way to shut down the mills. Make the kind of scene you did here at your state's capitol building, bring it to the doorstep of these horrible mills.

Both of those stores mistreat the small animals they sell and support "rescues" that have been proven to make money off of dogs they get from puppy mills that they buy and resell. I've said my piece against animal cruelty, as far as the presence of certain celebrities in this "protest" video I continue to be unimpressed, they have been part of the problem too and easily go for "feel good" photo or in this case video-ops to increase their PR currency in the eyes of an adoring public. @friedie1jeff : I realise you ask an honest if naive question but the truth is "legitimate" breeders ARE part if not most of the problem that causes this cruelty to continue, the breeder industry on the whole is corrupt, greedy and apathetic to the lives they profit from, they spend millions of dollars to lobby local, state & federal representatives against reform. Few breeders are ethical, empathetic and kind in the pursuit of profit.

They are like a rescue, any money that comes in goes straight to the dogs. Also, most breeders breed for the betterment of the breed. Do some people do it wrong and just breed for profit? Yes, but those are not the people I'm talking about. I also don't mean this comment to refer to the breeders who have "messed up" the breed (GSDs, Bassets, to name a couple).

@KatsWonderland I would think so. One who watches the YouTube videos, and especially those put up by PETA, would likely get a slanted perspective. Although public awareness of such activities is a positive step in stopping them, they should then take the responsibility to make the public aware that, as you say, quite a few pet stores do use legitimate sources. Perhaps what is needed is a "seal of approval" by a reputable organization, of a pet store. The Humane Society or the ASPCA.

@mybigredlip You can still buy young and purebred puppies from reputable breeders, the ones who ask you a million questions to make sure the pet is going to a good home. You need to visit those breeders to see the parents and living conditions. YOU CAN NEVER BE SURE 100% THAT A DOG DOESN'T COME FROM A PUPPY MILL IF U BUY FROM A PET STORE... because responsible breeders never sell to pet stores, and also the stores have a practice of faking the documents, pedigrees, and vet checks.

well, i own a puppy mill with my uncle so i know what happens in there. All we do is breed a dog untill it cant breed anymore and then we send it to a shelter or to someone that is looking for a dog. Our puppies are beautifull and healthy, there might be other Puppy Mills that mistreat dogs, but I'm positive our dogs aren't mistreated. I hope you learned a lesson out of this, not all Puppy Mills are bad.

No, you are not saving when you buy in a pet store, not at all. In fact, when you buy ANYTHING in a pet store that sells live animals, you are enriching the puppy mills. They just fill the cage with another one. You are actually making it worse. AND making them richer for doing this abuse to animals. Please stop giving people false information. It is harmful to dogs. The animals should be given to rescue organizations to find loving homes. It's the pups' mothers that are suffering, not the pups.

Initially, yes, but the less we buy from them, the less demand, and therefore it starts to end the trend. If a person owning 100+ breeding dogs is selling HALF of what they bring out, then they will start to breed less dogs since they do not have the money. Which in turn, yes ends the life of the dogs there, but means there are less dogs being bred for this purpose.

I hate going to pet shops and seeing the terrible conditions in which they keep all the animals, especially the dogs and cats. And they always have this depressed and lethargic look on their faces, it's often brought me to tears. I wish I could just buy all of them and save them from their misery, but that would mean supporting the pet stores. The only answer is to force them to close.

Good Dog Animal Rescue has purebred poms (PUPPIES) in Los Angeles, RESCUED from a puppy mill that was shut down. It's because of people like you lovinsledogs that these hell holes are in business to begin with. The pound dogs love you just as much, you should not be breeding dogs and you should not be breeding at all. YOU HAVE NO HEART or BRAINS.

Why don't they just make laws on improving the conditions for puppy mills? Ive seen footage of puppy mills and its disgusting, so how the heck they are allowed to run with those conditions beats me. But lets be real, pet shops cant all close, and some people want certain types of dogs

If you want a specific type of dog go to a responsible breeder. what makes a respomsible breeder... one thing is that a responsible breeder would never sell their pups in a pet store!!!They want to know where their pup is going. Most have dozens of questons to ask you and will do screening. They only sell to approved buyers, not just any joe blow who has $700 (or whatever the costis) in his hot hand!
And on that topic, most responsible breeders sell pups at lower prices then most pet stores!

thank you koreagrrl. my best friend and i and her other best friend, we're pom breeders, and our dogs are healthy and everything. and, we all have a policy that we will NOT sell to other breeders, pet stores, puppy mills, and even individuals if they don't pass our standards.

muriettapoms,It's unethical to breed, sell or buy while 5 million companion animals die in our shelter system every year. I just rescued a Pom from death row last week. They would have killed her for Christmas. She's 2, gorgeous and was abandoned. Why was she going to die? Because of dummies who BUY dogs.
Stop this now and find a more ethical way to make money. How would you like to be used to sell your babies? Spay/neuter and stop being part of the problem. Adoption is the way.

actually Koreagrrl, buying from breeders isnt always that great, even "responsible" ones. There are many purebreds in shelters. The more people who breed animals, the less shelter animals get adopted. Many end up getting euthanized just cuz they've been in the shelter too long :(

ronren, yes, pet shops are closing and 6 have closed in Los Angeles due to public outrage. Peope can get "certain types of dogs" at the shelter or from a rescue org. And we are changing laws, state by state and working on a federal law as well. Get involved, and yes, let's "be real." Do something, get off your chair and join us. If a store was selling clothes made by enslaved children in the midwest, wouldn't you want that store closed? Nothing will ever change as long as people do nothing.

ladies. ever think wat might happen if all pet stores closed? with no pet stores, the only place you will be able to purchase a pup would be from breeders. Breeders sales would double/triple. Now only 1 of 2 things can happen here. #1, although demand doubles, breeder doesn't get greedy and facility and procedure remains the same. #2, n I'll bet most will agree, breeder sees opportunity to make more $ and breeding facility turns into, u guessed it, a puppy mill! please don't delete the truth.

If pet stores close, breeders will find another way to make money off the suffering of dogs. The Internet. Demand isn't growing at all. The economy is tanking and luxury dogs are not on people's priority lists of what they need. The pet industry will tank badly just like all the other retail industries.
We are concerned with the inhumane treatment of breeding dogs and the best way to convey this to the public is by telling them to not shop, adopt! Don't buy while shelter dogs die.

Not true. If pet stores stop selling puppies then people will have to go to shelters to get puppies. they won't be forced to go to a breeder. 1 in 4 shelter animals are purebred.

you are not getting "perfect puppies" from commercial breeders, that's why there are so many lawsuits. The date of birth of your dog is no more important than YOUR dob. You want a perfect puppy, huh? Are YOU perfect? I bet you aren't. And besides, what does a pedigree have to do with a loving relationship with your dog? Do YOU have a pedigree? What a spoiled and superficial person you are.

You have zero idea of what you are talking about. My Pom was going to be euthed the next day. She was redlisted at the Los Angeles shelter. I didn't get her out to adopt her either, it was to save her life. We tried getting her adopted and she got very few calls because of the serious economic collapse right now. Many, many people are giving up purebred dogs and the shelters are over-crowded. So we kept her. With your ideas, she'd be dead, u heartless creep.

Not all breeders run puppymills- this is about shutting down puppy mills who don't care about the animals and their health or lineage. Reputable breeders do not breed dogs to make money- they breed dogs for the love of the breed. My cousin is a top notch German Shepherd breeder and never has more than one or two litters per year and only breeds her dogs with other top notch dogs that are healthy, good natured and genetically sound. Puppy mills don't care about the dogs- just the money

No there is nothing wrong with dogs shows. Those people only breed the best of the best and don't sell un-sterlized dogs to the public. They aren't the problem. Show dog owners don't buy from puppy mills or puppy stores because they know about how bad their genetics can be.
And what do you have against mutts? So your saying that a mutt can't be beautiful? You seem WAY too caught up in a bunch of "papers" then to really love a dog for how they are and not what breed they are.

You do realize that purebreds are a lot of breeds combined togther until a specific look and traits. And when did I ever say it was your fault for the dogs in shelters or say you sold unsterilized dogs? And I love how you cuss like your trying to make a point or seem right. If you are a responsible breeder then I have no problem with you and neither do most rescue groups. There is no reason for you to insult our perfectly good mutts. I have even more respect for Richard Belzer than I already had. It is great to hear that a prominent Hollywood figure doesn't buy from pet shops. Also, Baby has a book written about her by the lady holding her in the video! I am looking forward to picking up a copy of the book, titled 'A Rare Breed of Love'.
It's one thing to say you want to do something, but it's another thing to mobilize and really make a difference. Great job closing them down.

Sometimes it takes months or years, but sometimes they don't shut down. But what does happen is their bottom-dollar is impacted. The protests spread awareness about pet store puppies and that there are so many shelter pets needing good homes. Some stores have actually stopped selling and have begun hosting adoption groups instead! The Animal House in St. Petersburg, Florida is a prime example of that kind of victory.
