  • just on words, lets hope the definition of the word 'friend' gets re worked, as I feel internet social networks has changed the value and strength of this word

it's so bad now even youtube had to drop it

  • You can't smell!? Eh, you're not really missing anything.

  • Heyyy you totally stopped by our booth at VidCon! Thanks! Also, I love the editing style and humor in this video :)

  • I love Tom Milsom :3

  • I have the hoodie at @2:32 and its awesome. just sayin.

  • @WierdElla We are now hoodie buddies.

(I was the weirdo in the picture.)

  • comment 101 boooooooooooiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

  • Love your videos. This one was terrific. Does your lack of ability to smell interfere with your ability to taste? I always wondered about that but never knew anybody to ask.

  • @RandomerThanAverage Here's the problem. How would I know? I can only taste what I taste. I have no idea what other people taste. I suppose there must be some standardized taste tests--the equivalent of eye charts and hearing tests. But in those cases, there's an economic incentive behind the tests: selling us eye-glasses and hearing aids. And in the case of eye tests, there's a social incentive--keeping the sightless from getting driver's licenses.

  • @mickeleh I suppose that's true, but you do taste then. It would be an interesting thing to test, if we could figure a way to taste it. Taste and smell are so linked that it seems like a good question to me.

  • @RandomerThanAverage I agree. It's a great question. I just don't know the answer.

  • Also. I love that picture of me. I want it.

  • @RogueBlueJay The entire video sprang from that photo, Ali. Seriously. I've been spinning it up in my head since vidcon. I knew that Tom would one day post a video for "Smell." And I held back for the occasion.

  • there is always a sniff of a good video here, and again you delivered

  • @leokimvideo Thanks, Leo.

  • You're audio is fixed! Nice job. Also, the fact that you can't smell is probably why we're friends.

  • @RogueBlueJay So, carrying a tongue scraper in your pocket is just a ruse to convince anosmiacs that your breath is ok?

  • I've never seen a video have nearly 200 likes and 0 dislikes *knocks on wood* seriously though I agree with Linaseoyonpark up there. You are awesome, sir.

  • @Amberspaz55 Thanks much. (pssst. Tell your friends)

  • "My dog has no nose"

    "How does it smell"

    "Terrible!"

  • You forgot to mention Deadpool. He loves breaking that fourth wall.

  • That hat. Unf. I less than three that hat.

Also, it's obvious that you're the kinda guy that has great taste in books. Maybe you could recommend some? I was about to say it'd probably make a great video series, you digesting all your favourites for our visual and audio pleasure, but I'm sure you already have enough vids on your list already, right?

Anyway, you're videos are, as always, a great pleasure. Until next time =)

  • You are awesome, sir. That is all.

  • @linaseoyonpark That is enough. Thanks.

  • Two things: Unlike Webster's, the Oxford English Dictionary never retires a word - I believe Noah Webster has much to answer for in relation to the direction of the English language. And the other thing is a question: can you taste without your sense of smell?

  • @petesime I wonder if it's possible to calculate how much paper and ink Noah Webster has saved over time by tossing the superfluous "u"s in flavour, colour, etc. The OED, at 20 volumes and more than a thousand dollars has different requirements compared to a one-volume dictionary. Nowadays, in the long-tail of the internet, no dictionary needs to retire words. I do have a sense of taste. I have impaired, not absent ability to smell and I have the four tastes afforded by the tongue.

  • @mickeleh

Actually, there's (at least) 5. The fifth one is "umami".

  • Awesome take, Mickeleh but I'm not exactly happy that you have lost your sense of smell. Bummer. I already all about Tom Milsom's new album. I've bought the download and the limited edition blue LP! I'm set! Interesting word "nosarians" and thank you for telling us about it and explaining what context that author used it in. You/We should bring that word out of retirement.

And I agree with Monisuresh: You should call us your Nosarians! Definitely!

  • @jeremyshaw Shall I infer that you are, then, approximately happy? ;)

  • @mickeleh haha, Yes, Mickeleh, you shall indeed infer that =). For the most part I AM happy.

  • Have you ever been able to smell?

  • @pogobat Yes, Dan. And I can still smell a little. Anosmia covers impaired smell as well as total inability. Not sure exactly how or why I lost it. Long-running allergies (and the meds I've used to combat them) may have something to do with it.

  • Ah, the Spy Kids 4 smell-o-vision deal ... *sigh*

    - Jason

  • I remember your smell-o-vision video! I think it was the first I watched of yours.

  • @Cohenism Jake! Long time. How are ya?

  • Hmmm. You're the second person I'm aware of that has anosmia! Both found on youtube.

  • well i suppose not having smell is about the least impacting loss of sense, i would still hate it and feel bad for him, but there are some dirty jobs he could do no problem.

  • this reminds me that I need to get that new Tom Milsom CD. I do I do!

  • I tried to find some point to this video, but couldn't.

  • Scott Pilgrim = grate

  • Mickeleh, I hope you single-handedly bring back the word nosarian.

  • Mickeleh you should call your followers the Nosarians. :D

  • @Monisuresh He could try Nohairians ;)

  • When are you going to finish the cloud series!?!?!?

  • One of my favourite things: listening to you, with your wonderful vocal authority, say "doobley-doo"

  • @KateLouise Stand back, then. I say it a lot in my next video. It's very doobley-doo-centric.

  • Oh... it explains how you was able to try to shave with butter!!!

  • @TemporalOnline Hahahaha.

  • Were you born without the sense of smell or did you lose it sometime during your life?

  • @blackumbra It happened after long bouts with allergies. Maybe too much nosespray. I don't really know exactly. Smell is not totally gone. More impaired than lost.

  • @mickeleh oh no, what nosespray? I'm using fluticasone (steroid).

  • @abmindprof I've been prescribed steroid-based sprays in the past few years, but I'm pretty sure this happened long before. I should have kept a medical journal. But who knew?

  • Tom Milsom is my drug, but Lately he hasn't been tasting like the thing he tastes like.

    PS: awesome video.

  • @GONEmypurpleflapjack The dude evolves. That's part of the fun.

  • @mickeleh I was just referencing a video of his.

  • @GONEmypurpleflapjack And a fine and funny video that was.

  • SCIENCE!

  • If you can't smell, how would that affect taste? I always thought a big part of taste is linked to smell.

P.S. Is it affect or effect? I've always had trouble with that even after reading the definitions.

  • @JasonReview I don't know about how it affects taste. (and yes, you got that right). I know that I taste food the way i taste it. But I have no idea how people without anosmia taste it. I do that when I cook for people, they usually like it.

to affect someone or something is to influence it. To effect something is to cause a definitive result.

  • So Chickenout or Sellout?

  • I did, have been brushing my tounge for a long time :D

  • Nosarian is one of the recognized regional languages of The Holy Imperial Empire of Sakalian-Eathara

google Sakalian-Eathara to see what I'm talking about.

  • @zunathanzu I searched and I found this video. Amazing.

  • I had seem the spy kids thing and had thought of you!

  • @TheDanc1nghawk This made my day.

  • I want to own a dictionary published in the 1950s.

  • I don't have anosmia, but I do have hyposmia. It ends up being a bigger problem than you'd think. I can't tell when things stink, so sometimes I end up stepping in it, both literally and metaphorically.

The only thing I can consistently smell is meat, which makes me extremely nauseous. It's a pain in the ass.

  • Why don't your videos have a billion views???

  • And finally, the in-joke with future me, becomes clear! :D I must say, I did not think of that link!

  • 1) How the hell did you find that?!

    2) I see you fell for Tom's 'this isn't an EP' marketing.

  • @nerimon 1) By coincidence, you tweeted that around the time I was working on my old smell-o-vision videos. Caught my eye and I did a screen cap. I asked you then if I could use it. And you okayed it. But your response came too late, so I used it with your name and image pixelated out.

Knowing the date of that video, I searched my hard drive within a date range and found the un-anonymized version.

  • @nerimon 2) In the vinyl world, an EP was a 45 seven-incher with four or more songs instead of the usual A and B sides. Don't remember it ever being applied to a twelve-inch record. Wouldn't make sense to call a shorter-than-usual record "extended play" now would it?

  • @mickeleh In my opinion, it still makes more sense than a 'mini-album'. This is the opposite of a mini-album, if you're talking vinyl sizes. It's a large EP.

  • @nerimon Of course, you're entitled to your opinion. But UK's Official Charts Company has set an official boundary for an album: more than four songs or more than 25 minutes. Explorers 6 meets both those criteria. (It would only have to meet one to count as an album.)

  • Just went and saw Tom's video, loved the editing, so nice x

  • Dear Mickeleh,

Will you ever finish the cloud series? This is getting ridiculous, I have been in suspense for weeks.

  • @agntsmith Finish? No. there's too much to talk about. But continue and end your suspense, definitely. This week.

  • @mickeleh Whoo!

  • Very interesting Michael. Lots of stuff I didn't know about.

  • Are you interested in seeing movies with Smell-O-Scope? It's a marketing ploy, but does it hook you in?

Although Shawshank is my favorite film, I would probably avoid that if they implemented anything like Smell-O-Scope, especially for the escape scene. : P

    ~ Jethro.

  • Wait. You can't smell and I can't hear. We need to travel together. (Great video. You are amazing.)

  • Smell-O-Vision. Just one more reason not to go to the movie theaters anymore.

  • @scratchingcat Ute, as I detailed in my videos (another shameless plug), the reason smell-o-vision failed the first time around was because all the different smells just accumulated in the theatre. It was almost impossible to clear one smell before the next one came on. But the new versions use scratch and sniff cards. That should be perfect for a scratching cat.

  • In a theme park (its called "pretpark" in Dutch, I think I translated it correctly) near where I live they also have a 4D theater, the 4th dimension being wind blowing in your face and your chairs vibrating etc.

This is why I don't like marketing, they give names to things, but you can seldom derive any information from what things are called.

  • Hilarious and interesting video! Love it. :D

  • Let's bring back the word nosarian!

  • Not even Cinnabon? The horror!

  • in it.

  • they're advertising it as 4d? smell is not a dimension.

  • @vukeidge You want to argue with marketing? You might as well argue with the Nosarians.

  • Ugh, ad placements.

  • of course the nosarians have been forgotten! the memories were kept inside those mountains on their face. To quote me quoting you quoting me.

  • I work at a movie theater and we had Spy Kids for weeks. I would get so angry when people would talk about 4D. SMELL IS NOT A DIMENSION. THERE ARE DIMENSIONS OF TIME AND DIMENSIONS OF SPACE, THERE IS NO DIMENSION OF SMELL. Calling it Smell-O-Vision is fine, but do NOT call it 4d. I wrote a letter to the movie studio complaining about this. They have yet to respond.

  • i can smell its orite i guess. i do not have the sense of xray vision which sucks

  • Great to see Mickeleh's pretty much got the technology sorted on his videos now. goos sound, no green aura and even a special effect or two. Congrats Mickeleh!

  • @mooxim I agree. Took a bit of troubleshooting, but I'm happy to say the trouble has been shot.

  • Tom Milsom, my favorite YouTube discovery.

Companies will keep creating remedies for smells. Some people will buy anything to avoid stink. Then they'll update these things so you'll want to buy the latest product because it claims to be better, even if it's not.

    Great video :)

  • But if you were to have a mountain on your face wouldn't it be more like there was a face on a mountain? Eh? Eh?

  • @MarkArandjus You must be one of those anti-nosarians, eh? eh?

  • That must really ruin the food experience.

  • Rather interesting video. :) Good job mate! Xx

  • Does your anosmia affect also your taste? Do you enjoy some food less then other people because you can't smell it?

  • @Viniter24 I can't answer that. I only know how I taste food. I love food. I'm a good cook. But it's likely I have a diminished experience.

  • This video was a hodgepodge of random fun and Tom Milsom, who is random fun. Love it!

  • I have it on good authority that you have no sense of smell, so I'll attempt to help out. Tom Milsom smells like blue.

  • I also have anomsia, and I just finished reading a book where one of the main characters also had anosmia, then I come home to find you talking about anosmia, what a coincidence.
