I have known Rhonda since she was a teen. She started out with bluegrass, tried to break into country, finally returning to bluegrass. She is awesome!
Why the comparison between Rhonda Vincent and Alison Krause? Let's face it, they have little in common outside the fact that both are bluegrass singers. Their voices, styles and songs are very different. As to who influenced who , Rhonda is the older of the two and started performing as a child in her family"s band. Alison was a fiddle champion from Chicago who reluctantly began singing lead with Union Station.
But Alison Krause could only wish to sing with the emotional depth of Rhonda.
If you think singers need to express emotion by singing louder and bobbing their head a lot, then I can see why you'd think Rhonda projects more emotion. As you said, they differ. Alison specializes in wistful unrequited love songs, to which she applies her incomparably angelic voice. But I guess you haven't listened much to Alison Krauss.
In response to allynhanna - I am guessing that you thought Alison came first and then you heard Rhonda? Alison says Rhonda was one of her biggest influences. Rhonda is pure bluegrass and always will be, Alison is great but has abandoned her roots to do Pop and Rock now.
I agree this song in underrated. I wonder if Rhonda wrote it? The lyrics are truly soulful and the melody is haunting. Some memories time can't erase.
I agree 100%...everytime I hear this song it describes the heartache/happiness of a time I will never forget! A time I still long for everyday and re-live over and over from time to time...and yes those memories of "that old oak door" will be what I am smiling about when I'm old and gray in "that old oak rocker"! I would do it all over again if given the chance...fully knowing the heartache that lay ahead. I was where I was supposed to be...It is my alltime favorite song. Happy/Sad/Happy/Sad!
oh,man do i agree. i let her go, my daughter was 3 yrs. i had to let her go, to be with my daughter. i went back to my wife. no regrets, because of my kids. but i think about her 5 times aweek, and wonder.
When Rhonda sings this song, I feel she knows my heartache of loving that out of reach person. It's nice to know someone out there knows how I feel. I've been kissed "up against that old oak door" and while I wouldn't trade the memory for anything, the memory causes me pain because it is never to be re-lived. Still when I think of him, I am filled with such joy that I could not imagine never having had that memory. I suppose that's why they call it the agony and the ecstacy. Anyone agree?
I totally agree and feel for you, hun. When I first heard this one I felt the same exact way, that she was singing out everything that I'd been though. Only my "old oak door" was a 97 Chevy. lol And the fact that it feels so personal is probably the biggest reason that it's my favorite RVR song as well. That and it's just simply beautiful.
Thanks. My 'old oak door' was the door of his parlor. Funny she mentions the old oak door. Really hit home. Have you seen the video version of this with the movie projector. Really portrays it well, for my memories of Brian are like home movie reels. When life gets tough, I take out one of those reels and run it through my mind, and I feel better, even though we can't be together. I'm enjoying your other vids, by the way.
Brilliant songwriting. And NO ONE could deliver it better the the Georgous Rhonda. Met her at Grey Fox a few years ago and she made me feel like I was the only one there. Beautiful woman. Thanks for posting a great song.....
What a song for anyone who has ever loved someone that they can't have. I've wrapped myself up in this one many long lonely nights since it came out. Rhonda Vincent is FABULOUS!!!
Just saw her in concert this afternoon at the South Florida Bluegrass festival. She is absolutely incredible. And as an added bonus we went to eat after the concert and whose tour bus happened to be in the Sonny's BBQ parking lot and what gang just happened to be at the restaurant? Dynamite singer and band and humble and down to earth; real folks. LOVE EM!
LOL that's so awesome! You're right, Rhonda and her band are just incredible and some of the sweetest people, along with talented and generous musicians, you'll ever encounter. Nothing compares the performances she puts on. Glad you enjoyed the concert! = )
Rhonda Vincent is by far the best female bluegrass artist alive...in my opinion:-) There isn't a song that she has performed/recorded that I have not enjoyed. She is just awesome!!
She's awesome - I just discovered her during a PBS pledge drive of all things, she was performing "Ragin Live" here in St. Louis (at the Sheldon) and then I saw her co-hosting "Edge of Country" on cable and learned she is FROM Missouri and is a big Cards fan! Too cool!! The lady is quite a talent.

It almost seems as if she should've switched guitars with her band mate. It looks like its too big for her. She is awesome regardless!
