The reason the tram was added in WoW was from the often excetic gnomes. The gnomes where thinking that instead of walking into Burning steppes why not build a train its quicker fom Stormwind to Ironforge. So once it was created the humans and all alliance didn't have to risk there lives just to get to another city.
