thanks a lot from spain for this video, mark! it´s great to understand how to play this complicated "travis picking" thing ;) you make a great job with each video you upload.
I think your fingering of the main riff is sub-optimal. If you use pinky for 2nd string in the first shape (regular D) and then ringfinger for the C-bass note, and then index finger for B-bass, you'll end up with a smoother sequence, with less finger/hand movement.
Fuckin' Awesome man!!!! You inspire a young soul like me!!! I learned the parts I couldn't figure out by listening with you!!!! Greetings from Colombia!!! Keep on Rockin'!!!
Mark would you recommend to a finger picking beginner (like me) to get some of those things your wearing on yer fingers or would you advise I learn first without them ? Everytime I see you fingerpicking Beatles songs it is such a great sound and I need to learn it as at the moment I just strum songs.
@DamianSix66 Hi Damian, good question, I learned with my fingers first, and then I got the plastic fingerpicks. It took me about a month of practicing with them every day to get used to them.
Only decided I wanted to play this song yesterday and found the tab - which gave me problems. Should have realised you would have covered it and come here first! Thanks to your lesson, I can almost play the song. Many thanks Mark, 5* as always :)
Mark you rock,I'm 59 started guitar about a year ago after a 30 year hiatus, you have it all buddy great playing, awsome voice.Your my inspiration. From one old guy to another "Keep on rockin",take care.
Great job. Donovan taught Lennon how to finger pick and the result was Dear Prudence and Julia. There is a Youtube interview of Donovan with his guitar before a live audience reliving the Lennon lesson. "Donovan teaching John Lennon a guitar finger style" is the YouTube link. He called it the CLAW HAMMER technique.
That's an interesting video, although Donovan plays dear prudence in his own way at the end. He does call it clawhammer, but that is what we call a particular type of banjo and guitar strumming from old timey music down here in the appalachians, which alternates a base or melody note with a strum pattern. That goes back a hundred years or more.
Donovan is an under rated folk icon of his time. His comparison to Dylan hurt him, accused of copying. He was his own singer songwriter who came out of the folk era and transitioned it into pop like many others of that time. Dylan denies he was a folk writer early on but he was. Dylan and Donovan were probably the best at it as singers too. Kingston Trio and the likes used others songs like the Easy Riders who wrote many hit folk songs but weren't the best performers. Sloop John B is one.
It's real hard to teach or convey what Travis Picking is, at the same time as teaching a new song which requires it. And I know it seems just slightly overwhelming to guitar players unfamiliar with the technique, because I remember what it was like for me at first.
Lennon learned Travis Picking from Donovan, and must surely have struggled with it at first also- it's hard to keep your thumb going the first time you start doing those finger plucks.
It does take time to learn to keep an alternating base going with your thumb, but if feels very natural once you are used to it.
This is a common folk style which I don't consider Travis picking, because Travis usually just played a one finger melody over the alternating base. This folk style alternating base with treble string patterns as a vocal accompaniment was pioneered by people like Donovan, Paul Simon, Paul Stookey, and then was learned by Lennon, John Denver, and many others.

By far the best guitar tutor on Youtube, in my opinion.
I dont know how you do it, but you make the seemingly 'too hard'' stuff quite learnable & in a such a short space of time.
You are amazing.
Thanks !!!!!
