This was a "commercial" produced for movie theaters, circa 1938; "YOUR ESSO REPORTER" was also the title of a daily radio newscast on many local stations in areas where Esso gasoline was sold [in the East and Midwest], and used for this ad as well.

@send2meez I grew up in Missouri, part of the Standard of Indiana area (no Esso/Exxon stations) and they had a nice non-threatening torch and oval. "You expect more from Standard... and you get it!"

Try checking out the price of fuel on my side of the 49th parallel--almost a third of it is tax (provincial and federal). $1.33/litre today (roughly $5.65 US per gallon with the conversion and exchange). The last time it was this steep was after Katrina.....$1.35 for regular unleaded.....
