good for competetion? or for carry or self defense. it depends an your grip. a gun should be good if u very well control the recoil. it should be properly tuned with its ammo. need not be expensive but costly ones and custom made are usually durable and reliable. having tried almost all pistol from 9mm up, i recommend Cal. 40. that is only for me. for others, may be different.
Living in the US gives you lots of choices. I most frequently see the STI Spartan recommended for people new to the sport. Relatively inexpensive and ready to go out of the box.
