  • Go home Mr.Hampson..... such a sadness

  • Horrible! Yuck! Come on. He does some great stuff but this is ridiculous. Yelling al over the place trying to sound like a Verdi Baritone doesn't cut it.

  • Pathetic. A voice for Malatesta at the heaviest.

  • Espantoso. Hace unos años me recomendaron escucharlo.

  • Bad idea Tommy.

    R. Merrill

  • I love his singing, but not in this aria....he should stay away from Wagner!

  • sure it's great singing, IF you consider screaming every note past E flat singing,.... Verdi can be sung LYRICALLY!!!... and like a baritone!!

  • He did good, he's not Bastianini, but he did good...

  • Não gostei.É a pior gravação do Hampson. Ele é sempre nota 9,5 pra 10. Não aqui.

  • I enjoyed this song as this man sang it.

  • You've got to be kidding me. Although Hampson isn't really a Verdi baritone, he sings this pretty well anyway. His technique is pretty solid i've heard him at the MET, his voice resonates and he can actually sing unlike most other baritones in this day and age...

  • Why now do the voices suited to Mozart, Rossini and lied sing Verdi but not the other way round? Where are the verdi baritones? The answer is simple, genuine large dark Verdian or Wagnerian or even Puccini voices are very rare, take good teaching, their repetoire is not sung in colleges so they are branded as difficult or clumsy voices and, most importantly these days, they tend, and I use the word advisably, tend to be housed in larger bodies. They also mature with age.

  • So we end up with pretty young Butterflies who can't be heard and appaling singing of the greatest music in western as shown by the gentleman above. If opera houses and agents want to kill the golden goose keep on treating the music with this distain, the audiance will drift away and you can blame everyone but yourselves.

  • Apologies for the spelling below, I got over excited.

  • Oh God,this is pretty bad.

  • T.Hampson is a great voice and musician he just made a bad choice singing tougher repertoir then his voice can take

  • thats right. he is a wonderful figaro by rossini, but a bad verdi baritone ...

  • I agree, although, i wouldn't call it tougher. His voice doesn't suit it, and that is evident. However, i really do like him in the lyric (what he's meant to sing) roles.

  • I agree with the concensus that Hampson here is over-taxed by this role. He really has to huff and puff his way through it, and by the time he gets to the middle section his voice is out of alignment and he cannot sustain the line. I hear this all the time; beginning voice students want to sing the "big boy" stuff and then wonder why their top goes away after 3 minutes of shouting at the top of their lungs. Be wise young male singers; you will sacrifice something to sing the big roles.

  • Cesare's comment below I think is accurate. Because there is not enough chiaro there cannot be the scuro. More brightness would allow a richer sound and allow for more weight. It's too open a sound.

  • I do admire him, but his voice is way too light to sing big Verdi roles.

  • I don't know...the lyrical section is really lovely. Mr. Hampson has never used too much cover on the top, even up to G. I truly think he's a baritenor--a singer whose passagio lies between C and F--and has never needed to cover like Milnes and Bruson. Is he a "Verdi Baritone?" No. But he is an extremely talented singer and artist; and no, this isn't a career role for him, but it is nice to hear it sung with subtlety and finesse.

  • That's some top notch shouting there, Thomas. Never let your ego grow larger than your voice.

  • Maestro Hampson what do you think of Manuel Ausensi?

People in the list listen to Manuel Ausensi Verdi Arias, unknown gold.

  • RIDICULOUS!!!! Just like trying to fit a small sock in a big foot!

  • I think that it is an insult to Verdi.. This score can't be sang with the Mozart's style!! I think that he should sing only Mozart!! Don't insult again Verdi!!!!

  • the voice is much to white for verdi..........no coperto......no chiaro-scuro.........pitty and at t

  • too

the word is too, not "to"...

    anyway....

  • Hampson should be admired for his lieder, American songs, Figaro, etc... but this, eh... its tolerable, but it lacks the depth and vocal core that Milnes, Cappuccilli, and Bruson brought to the role. It needs to go beyond just "bel canto". Verdi is a step up.

  • i love thomas hampson. i went to ewu and when he would visit, it was so much fun to have lunch with him. he's a great singer and a genuinely nice guy.

  • oh,wonderful! please, tell us something about this lunch...

  • Oh! Please, tell us something about this lunch.

  • Go Thomas Hampson! you can sing Verdi!!!!!!!!!!

At least I think you can.

  • Umm.. T.H. does not have the meat for this.

This just sounds completely wrong; like a tenor covering for an indisposed baritone.

  • Go Thomas Hampson! you can sing Verdi!!!!!!!!!!

At least I think you can.
