Well actually, although religious extremism is mostly to blame for 9/11, there haven't been an wars that used religion as anything more than a cover story pretty much ever. The surface goal was to unify christians under a single banner, but if one looks into the subtext they quickly realize that much of the holy Roman afterall. His dealt primarily in complete power over a nation of people. The way the Church was set up reflected this.
