just be careful where you use your cards and don't just give away your credit details to anyone asking over the phone. be careful when you buy stuff online.

buying on pure cash, in the US at least, is not always the smart way to go since some companies (mortgage/lenders/insurance) would still want proof of your good credit standing before providing you anything. insurance premiums may also be affected by low credit standing.

if you can't afford it, don't buy it. that's my philosophy. in the case of a mortgage, i am sure you can build credit in other ways besides a credit card. paying your bills on time (utilities/college tuition/etc) is a start. don't be fooled by the cc companies and how they make you think that use of cc's is the only way to establish credit.
